Slow Cooker Ham with Pineapple Recipe

Slow Cooker Ham with Pineapple Recipe

Cook Time: 420 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 (6 to 7 pound) picnic ham
  • 1 (15.25 ounce) can pineapple rings, juice drained and reserved
  • 1 (16 ounce) can cola-flavored carbonated beverage (such as Pepsi)

Directions

Step 1: Place the ham in the slow cooker, ensuring the fattier side is facing down.

Step 2: Use toothpicks to attach the pineapple rings to the ham.

Step 3: Pour the reserved pineapple juice over the ham.

Step 4: Add the cola into the slow cooker with the ham and pineapple.

Step 5: Cover the slow cooker and cook on Low for 7 to 10 hours, until the ham is tender and fully cooked.

Cook's Notes

In my opinion, Pepsi works best for this recipe. After cooking, I prefer to leave the ham whole, but some people enjoy shredding it into chunks and mixing it with the cooked pineapple for added flavor.

I have to admit, I didn't follow the recipe exactly as it was written. I've tasted cola-flavored slow cooker meats before and I wasn't a big fan, so I decided to swap the cola for a bottle of Pinot instead. I also opted for a spiral-cut ham, which I believe enhanced its flavor beautifully. This was hands down the best ham I've ever had. I marinated it in pineapple juice and wine for 24 hours before slow-cooking it for 9 hours while I was at work. It was so delicious that I'm now on the hunt for a recipe to make use of the leftover juices. The dish was incredibly easy to prepare, cook, and serve, so I'll definitely be making it regularly.

I have been making this dish for years, but I prefer using 7 Up instead of cola. I also slow-cook it in the oven at a low temperature for up to 10 hours until the meat is tender and easily falls off the bone, making sure to baste every half an hour to keep it moist.

My husband really enjoyed it, but it wasn't quite to my taste. It's a simple recipe that some may love while others may not.
