Ultimate Cold Relief Home Remedy Tea Recipe
Ingredients
This recipe was developed at its original yield. Ingredient amounts are automatically adjusted, but cooking times and steps remain unchanged. Note that not all recipes scale perfectly.
Original recipe (1X) yields 1 serving
- 8 ounces water, or as needed
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 clove garlic, peeled and smashed
Directions
- Combine water, vinegar, honey, cinnamon stick, and garlic in a small saucepan.
- Heat to 100F (38C); remove from heat and pour into a mug.
Cook's Note
You can substitute balsamic vinegar for apple cider vinegar.
My Great Grannie Gerdes, lovingly referred to as "Keister Gamma" by my family (long story), used to wash and disinfect with vinegar. She espoused the medicinal properties of the soured wine and used it to great effect while attaining a healthy 103 years of age. She must have been doing something right. My experience brewing kombucha has instilled a respect for the temperature-sensitive active components in the medicinal qualities of vinegar, honey, and essential oils.

Mom of 6 here. One of those baby ducklings brought home the sickness and passed it to me which started off as a scratchy throat/voice to then sounding like a pre-pubescent teenager and evolving into what I can only define as the cough of a 60 year 2 pack a day smoker in the matter of 3 days. I was waking up literally drowning in whatever this monster was. I found this recipe while browsing in the 2 o’clock (AM) hour as I didn’t want to just rely on otc medication; and went to buy some fresh ingredients…garlic press and all😬 I prepared the drink as directed and knew that I was going to need some moral support which feels odd to say because I love garlic, but this was OVER THE TOP garlicky and I got really nervous! My husband and daughter (16) both tried a sip after I begged her to take a taste in which I would promptly drink the rest after that, her reaction to the sip did not help matters but a deal is a deal so I went to the kitchen sink. My husband had said it was too hot to chug down so I had put the mug in the fridge for about 2 minutes to try and just take it down the hatch. I also tried to stick my tongue into the tea to test the temperature but there wasn’t a lot of liquid so I didn’t reach but my mouth sure tasted the garlic. I tapped my fingers to the top of my head repeatedly saying “I will not gag, I will not gag” and then took my first swig… I can only describe the drinking process as not bad because I tasted the sweetness of the ACV…and then it HIT ME like a PUNCH TO THE FACE WITH A SACK FULL OFF GARLIC 🧄 😫 The aftertaste of the garlic was SO intense that I am now afraid that I will never enjoy garlic cheese sticks again. I was able to choke down about 1/2 of the contents in the mug and I had to stop. I’m afraid my breath is now going to smell indefinitely but time will tell. I don’t think I’ll try this again unless I wake up tomorrow feeling like a brand new person. Proud of anyone who can get this down but it was not for meh 🫤 thanks for listening 😬

Came out really good I didn’t have cinnamon sticks so I used some ground cinnamon instead and it came out awesome!

Made this with powdered cinnamon because somehow our sticks disappeared, drank half the cup, coughed twice and cleared my throat. Amazing!

Coming down with what feels like a cold I decided to give this a try. Easy enough to make followed recipe. Does not taste bad at all sweet with the vinegar twang. Only gave it 4 stars because I had nothing to compare by. Will update if this remedy actually works!

I was a little skeptical about the taste of this drink but turned out to be good. Sweet and quite enjoyable. This drink definitely helped to unblock my sinuses. This is a natural recipe that works and there is nothing better than that.

Very nice! I added an extra tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, and about a quarter tablespoon of fresh ginger. I can almost feel it kicking my cold in the butt!
