Hamburger Stew with Cabbage Recipe

Hamburger Stew with Cabbage Recipe

Cook Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients

This recipe was developed at its original yield. Ingredient amounts are automatically adjusted, but cooking times and steps remain unchanged. Note that not all recipes scale perfectly.

Original recipe (1X) yields 8 servings

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 stalks celery, sliced
  • 2 (15 ounce) cans dark red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • head cabbage, shredded
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cubes beef bouillon
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt to taste

Directions

  1. In a large soup pot, crumble the ground beef. Cook over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until the beef is browned and crumbly (about 5 minutes). Drain the excess grease.
  2. Add the chopped green bell pepper, onion, and sliced celery to the pot. Continue to cook, stirring frequently, for another 5 minutes.
  3. Increase the heat to high. Add the drained kidney beans, crushed tomatoes, shredded cabbage, beef broth, water, Worcestershire sauce, beef bouillon cubes, and minced garlic. Stir everything together until well combined.
  4. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Let it simmer for about 30 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  5. Once the soup has finished simmering, ladle it into bowls. Season with salt to taste before serving.

Recipe Tip

While it won't taste like Shoney's, ground venison is also a great alternative to the lean ground beef in this recipe.

I did have to add another two cups of broth and some salt.

I tried this recipe on a whim, and it turned out amazing. So flavorful, easy to follow, and everyone loved it. I’ll definitely make this again — it’s a new favorite.

I used 4 c beef broth, no water. 2 cans Rotella tomatoes. 1 pack of beefy onion soup mix, no bouillon. Lots more salt and pepper. No beans, add carrots. Was really good.

Great soup; made it twice in two weeks!! Tweaks…. - Used NO Sodium Bouillon - Used an extra 1/4-1/2 lb. Beef - added some fresh spinach at very end. - I seasoned meat when browning, with “Accent” general type seasoning. I froze a batch, too!

I think recipe was very bland. Really no seasoning. I added some 1 tsp. oregano, cracked pepper, and 1/2 tbs more Worcestershire sauce. Seemed hearty but not tasty if recipe followed.

A great take on hamburger soup. I followed fairly closely except only added one cup of water/one bullion to make a thicker soup. Only had one can of kidney beans. Added about 3/4 cup elbow macaroni. Easy and hearty.

I made too many changes to be able to review honestly, though what I got was good. I never use bouillon cubes, (or canned soup) but organic broth, so no water. Seems like all these recipes with tomatoes, ground meat and beans come out resembling chili.

Easy to make but it lacks an herb or spice. I added parsley but thyme would be good also.

I used a red cabbage, and changed the kidney beads to chickpeas, and I didn't have Worcestershire sauce. But it was great and my family loved it. For sure we will have this again. Easy to make and it is delicious.

Too bland, no flavor. . . So, I Added V-8 and more beef bouillon. Made it better, but will not make again.

I have eaten this soup many times at Shoney's. I also replicated it and this recipe agrees with mine. Easy and delicious.

Fast and easy to make. I did make min with venison and it was very good. I would make it again. Get a nice bread to go with it.

Very good, a little on the bland side. I’ll spice it up some next time I make it. Also, this makes quite a big batch.

Needs more "kick". Would just prefer to make chili.
