Fantastic Black Bean Chili Recipe

Cook Time: 75 minutes

Ingredients

This recipe was developed at its original yield. Ingredient amounts are automatically adjusted, but cooking times and steps remain unchanged. Note that not all recipes scale perfectly.

Original recipe (1X) yields 6 servings:

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 3 (15 ounce) cans black beans, undrained
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon dried basil leaves
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar

Directions

Step 1: Heat oil in a large heavy pot over medium heat. Add the diced onion and minced garlic; cook and stir until the onion has softened and turned translucent, about 5 minutes.

Step 2: Add the ground turkey to the pot. Cook and stir until the turkey is browned and crumbly, which should take about 5 to 7 minutes.

Step 3: Stir in the black beans (with the liquid), crushed tomatoes, chili powder, oregano, basil, and red wine vinegar. Mix everything thoroughly to combine.

Step 4: Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 1 hour. This will allow the flavors to meld together and create a rich, savory dish.

This was delicious and EASY. I used 1.3 lbs of ground turkey. I, too, increased the crushed tomatoes to 28 oz., added 1/2 T. cumin and some jalepeno and chipotle peppers. I cooked the onion, garlic and turkey in a saute pan, then transferred the mixture to a crockpot (so I didn't have to tend to it) and added the other ingredients. It cooked on high for an hour and a half and was ready to eat.

I used ground beef and 2 cans of black beans (1 drained) and 1 can of red kidney beans (drained) and 1 small can of corn (drained). I added 1/2 tsp of cumin as suggested and a 28 oz can of crushed tomatoes and it turned out perfect and so delicious! I made it on the cook top and then transferred to crock pot on low for 3 hours! Perfect with cornbread! Tonight serving it on a baked potato with cheddar cheese and sour cream! This make a lot of chili so we will have enough to freeze as there are only 2 of us!

This recipe is great! I pureed the tomatoes, because my son doesn't like them chunky, and added a can of green chiles to the puree. It was delicious both of my sons raved about it! We had enough leftovers to have chili dogs the next night.

On the advice of others I made the following adjustments: 1 1/2 lbs. ground turkey, 28 oz. can crushed tomatoes, 14 oz can corn, (2) 14oz cans black beans & (1) 14oz can pinto bean (all drained), and added about 1 1/2 tsp. cumin along with spices. It was a little thick for my taste so I added (1) 14oz can of diced tomatoes toward the end of simmering time and gave it an extra 10-15 minutes. To add more zip I finely diced 1/2 a jalapeño and tossed that in when browning the meat. I will definitely make again but perhaps use (2) 14 oz cans diced and (1) 14 oz crushed, I like the tomatoes more chunky. My 11 year old son thought the flavor was great but suggested serving with rice to add more texture (we had it with chips for dipping/scooping). I thought it still needed a bit more zip so I put some homemade "zesty salsa" in my bowl. Overall a good, savory dish and it was a great new recipe, thanks Rebecca and reviewers! ps. I added about a Tbsp. dry Epazote to reduce the effects of the beans.

This chilli recipe was fantastic! So delicious. My family loved it. I used ground beef only because that’s what I had. Next time I’ll try ground turkey. I used a 28 oz. can of tomatoes like the other reviewers suggested. I also added 1/2 tsp. of cumin and some fresh ground pepper. I also added chopped green pepper and one chopped poblano pepper. I added a little water about 1/2 way through cooking just to thin out the sauce a bit, since it seemed too thick and I like chilli a little saucy. I served it with shredded cheddar and sour cream. It was easy and delicious! I would definitely recommend and I will be making this again.

Loved this recipe - easier and better tasting than my old recipe. I used 2 cans of beans and 2 cans of tomatoes. Also added a bit of worchestershire to the turkey as it was browning. I used Balsamic vinegar as that's what I had on hand. I got rave reviews and took second place in a chili cook off (should have been first)! This will be my new recipe!

I liked the ease of prep but didn't trust that the result would taste interesting. So I added an extra half-tbsp of chili powder and an 8 oz can of tomato sauce. I allowed the chili to sit and cool for 4 hours so the flavors would meld. Then I warmed the whole pot up again just before serving. It was delicious!

Great base recipe, but I did follow the advice of cutting some of the beans and upping the tomato puree. Needs spices! I halved the recipe and still used 1 more tsp of chili powder, 1 tsp of salt and one full diced chipotle pepper. Gave it a great smoky under taste. I dumped everything in the slow cooker to give it time to mellow.

Did it in the slow cooker but needed to add beef broth for liquid (because I always rinse my black beans — I don’t like the smell). Regardless it was a hit served with cheddar cheese and Tostitos scoops.

This chili turned out amazing! I made the following changes to the recipe: added one extra can of tomatoes (I used diced tomatoes). I included all the liquid with the tomatoes and beans. I used ground beef instead of turkey, added a tablespoon of cumin and extra tablespoon vinegar. It really came out quite nice!

Easy and tasty! I have made this a few times and add 1 tsp cumin. Next time I will try adding a 28 oz can of crushed tomatoes as others have suggested. Try it topped with shredded cheddar cheese.

Tasteless meat and bean soup. I added red pepper flakes, 5 garlic cloves, onion powder, smoked paprika, cumin, black pepper, and chicken broth. Good base recipe for most people I can see in the reviews. Safe and not too spicy. Everyone has a different taste in spices. You be the judge. I adjusted the base recipe into a family favorite.

Good basic chili recipe. I added cumin as others suggested. I added a combination of diced tomatoes, garlic tomato sauce and a few small fresh tomatoes because I didn’t have crushed tomatoes. You can start with this recipe and add whatever you want.

My husband loved this recipe. Even better than the one I’ve been making for years. It’s his go-to whenever I ask him what he wants me to make for dinner.

I looked for a chili recipe that used ground turkey and black beans and this one had basic seasonings I had. I didn't have the vinegar or garlic and subbed one can each of kidney and pinto beans (I'm saving my black beans for another recipe). I served the chili with sour cream and shredded cheddar. It was so good! I would make it again.

quick and easy to toss together on a damp day! Didn't have crushed tomatoes so I used diced instead and added some tomato paste to aid the consistency. Otherwise followed the recipe and it turned out well!
