Carol's Baked Ziti Casserole Recipe

Carol's Baked Ziti Casserole Recipe

Cook Time: 55 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 (16 ounce) package ziti pasta
  • 1 (15 ounce) ricotta cheese
  • cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 (28 ounce) jar meatless spaghetti sauce, divided
  • 2 cups shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese, divided
  • cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375F (190C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. Fill a large pot with lightly salted water and bring to a rolling boil. Stir in the ziti and return to a boil. Cook the ziti, uncovered, stirring occasionally, until tender yet firm to the bite, about 11 minutes. Drain the pasta and set aside.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine ricotta cheese, cup Parmesan cheese, and the lightly beaten egg. Mix well to form the ricotta mixture.
  4. Spread of the spaghetti sauce on the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Layer half of the cooked ziti on top of the sauce, followed by half of the ricotta mixture, of the remaining spaghetti sauce, 1 cup of mozzarella cheese, and 2 tablespoons of Parmesan cheese.
  5. Repeat the layers: add the remaining ziti, ricotta mixture, of the spaghetti sauce, 1 cup of mozzarella cheese, and the remaining 2 tablespoons of Parmesan cheese. End with the remaining spaghetti sauce and Parmesan cheese on top.
  6. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes, until the dish is heated through.

This was a delicious and easy recipe! My boyfriend was so happy there was a whole pan, as he couldn't stop eating it. The only thing that I substituted was Italian blend shredded cheese (with cream cheese in it) instead of plain mozzarella. Super tasty! Will make again for sure.

I've made this recipe a few times, this is my go to baked ziti dish now! The first time I made it following Carol's recipe, with the exception of the layering. I just mix together all the ingredients, except the final 1/4c cheese for the top, and pour it into the baking pan. Delicious! Ever since I've made the following tweaks: mix all the ingredients (except the topping cheese) including the uncooked pasta and add about half again more sauce, 1/2c each ff half and half and water. The pasta cooks in the oven, is never over done, and the sauce thickens up nicely. Sometimes I add browned hamburger seasoned with garlic, S&P. Thanks for posting the recipe!

This recipe was great -- I'm going to replace my current baked ziti recipe with this one. I did add 2T of Tastefully Simple garlic bread seasoning but even if you don't have that I'd recommend adding some seasonings of your choice (oregano, garlic, etc). I also mixed the sauce in with the ricotta mix instead of layering it. I found that it only needed to cook for 35 minutes and I took the foil off about 10 before the timer was set to go off so it got a little brown on top. Yummy!

First of all I added meat to the sauce and to offset the increase in mass and density I doubled up on mozzerella, added 22 ounces of rocatta instead of 15, and doubled up on the sauce. This is seriously one of the best baked ziti recipes I've ever tried! Absolutely delicious! 38 minutes is about perfect for cooking time btw.

Ok, I hate when people review a recipe but changed the entire recipe from what was recommended.. that being said, I followed this recipe except I used whole wheat pasta and low fat ricotta. I had some ground beef I needed to use and a half a bag of spinach so I threw that in the ricotta, I cooked the beef with a lot of garlic and was heavy on the Italian seasoning. It was wonderful, cheesy and it made at least 3 nights of dinner for my husband and I. Will absolutely be making this again.

Loved it,simple and quick dinner. The fiancé is a beef guy, so added 1lb ground beef to the ricotta mix. Also added the sauce to the mixture and then layered on top of the noodles. This made the mixture creamer and easier to spread. Heats through in about 40 minutes. Next time will add a little more sauce, as it was just slightly dry.

This was excellent as is but the 2nd time I made it I decided to add some veggies. I sauteed 2 medium zucchini and a small onion and added them to the marinara sauce with a can of diced tomatoes. Super delicious and a couple servings of vegetables per serving!

My husband thought this was “surprisingly very, very good” since I am not known for my culinary skills. Followed the recipe exactly except added italian sausage into the layers snd cut the recipe in half since it is just the two of us. Next time I will use some Italian seasoning and some garlic powder to the marinara sauce since I thought Raos was on the bland side or I will use a different sauce altogether.

THIS ROCKED! ! I added Hot Italian link sausage, that I broke up a bit to act like little meatballs. I used cottage cheese instead of the ricotta, along with a tablespoon of Herb de Provance. The shredded smoked Gouda sprinkled throughout sent this to Heaven! Thank you Carol;)

I made it but added cooked ground beef to the sauce and a lot more seasonings like basil, oregano and garlic. Taste like a lasagna but with different pasta. Very good.

Simple, already in the kitchen ingredients. I used cottage cheese instead of ricotta as it's less expensive for the wallet and diet alike. Definitely a keeper!

This was a good make ahead and bake for dinner recipe. Your photo threw me off when I read the ingredients (bad!). There are several comments on enhancements that transform this dish into a savory one (cheese and garlic seasonings). I highly recommend all (though perhaps not all at once) and it is depending on your red sauce of choice, this could be bland or savory - so test before adding. I originally used a simple organic marinara (bland) without the enhancements. Used a Newman's Sock-a-rooni sauce and much better - albeit no longer vegetarian.

It was a hit at a party!!! I had to substitute Rigatoni for Ziti - bc that was all the stores had— but it worked out fine!

Very tasty and pretty easy. Skipped the egg and the ricotta still kept most its shape. Kept covered with foil otherwise I think it would dry out.

I added some spicy ground sausage which gave it a little heat. Even my grandchildren, all under the age of 10, asked for seconds.

Simple and crazy good! I made it exactly the way the recipe called for it, and will definitely do it that way again. I also plan on adding ground beef and or sausage at some point and probably some vegetables; this recipe is a very good base to get creative with.
