Grandma's Hamburger Hot Dish Recipe

Grandma's Hamburger Hot Dish Recipe

Cook Time: 65 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon butter for greasing, or as needed
  • 1 (8 ounce) package egg noodles
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 cup diced celery
  • 1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of chicken soup
  • 1 (4.5 ounce) can mushrooms
  • cup milk
  • cup salted cashews

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F (175C). Grease a casserole dish with butter.
  2. Arrange uncooked egg noodles in the prepared casserole dish, spreading them out evenly.
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef, chopped onion, and diced celery. Cook and stir for 5 to 7 minutes until the beef is browned and crumbly. Drain and discard any excess grease from the skillet.
  4. Stir in the condensed mushroom and chicken soups, canned mushrooms, and milk into the beef mixture. Mix well to ensure everything is evenly combined.
  5. Pour the beef and soup mixture over the uncooked noodles in the casserole dish. Spread it evenly with a spatula.
  6. Cover the casserole dish with aluminum foil and place it in the preheated oven. Bake for 30 minutes.
  7. After 30 minutes, remove the foil and sprinkle the salted cashews on top of the casserole. Continue baking for an additional 30 minutes or until the dish is bubbling and golden brown on top.
  8. Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving.

Haven’t made it yet, the doesn’t say if the noodles are cooked ahead or not?

This recipe has potential. The flavors were decent, but next time I would make some tweaks. We found the cashews to be an odd addition, and ended up taking them off, even though we love cashews. I feel like another flavor of cream soup, other than cream of chicken, would have worked better. The recipe doesn’t state what size casserole dish to use. For the record, 9 x 13 would be too big so use something smaller. Are we supposed to drain the canned mushrooms? Next time I would NOT, because the dish came out pretty dry, and some of the noodles were still crunchy. The beef/onion/celery mixture desperately needs some sort of seasoning, and thankfully I added salt and pepper. In step 4, I would also keep the dish covered the whole cook time, otherwise the dish dries out quickly and the cashews get too brown. Other than that, this was a nice change of pace, but not sure if I’d make this again.

This is 1 of my favorite MealsWhen you're a busy Or grandmother Or grandmother And you need something that's comforting and delicious! Those who question the noodles, Yes please cook them You're working with canned soups, which are precooked. You are only baking for 30 minutes so they will come out tough if you do not precook. I hope it helps someone

Because of many saying it needed flavor, I did go off the recipe. I added Worceshire, Grey Poupon, sour cream, fresh mushrooms and frozen mixed veggies. I also precooked the noodles. Mixed everything together before putting into casserole dish. This came out very good. I don't eat much and I even went back for seconds.

Make this a lot, I use sour cream mixed with soups, family loves it. Precooked noodles to top with mixture.

Excellent Recipe albeit I ended up freezing 4/5ths of it. I varied from the recipe using some of the tips from other comments. I cooked the pasta before baking it. I used cream of brockley & cream of cauliflower soups and ground almonds instead of cashews. I used the entire can of whole mushrooms (water included). I kept it covered the entire time. It barely fit in my 9"X 9" casserole dish and overflowed during baking. In the last 5 minutes, I added the ground almonds and shredded parmesan cheese. Perhaps I should have used a smaller onion and less celery. It was a delicious recipe though!

This has the makings of a good recipe, but it leaves out at least one major step. First, the noodles should be cooked at least halfway before adding them to the casserole dish. Second, the meat and soup mixture should be stirred into the noodles to incorporate the whole thing. I followed the exact directions and the flavors are okay, but the noodles were left tough and far too crunchy. I'd be embarrassed to serve this to anybody.

So yummy. I did not use the cashews as my kids won't eat them and I sprinkled some shredded Swiss cheese on top about 10 minutes before being done. I will definitely use this recipe again.

I followed this exact recipe. Even purchased the hamburger from a local butcher. This is the most tasteless nothingburher I’ve ever eaten. I love cashews but not in a casserole. I had it the first night right from the oven. Tasteless. So today I took a portion out and cooked on stove top added butter and a little water. No better. I dumped down my insinkerator. One suggestion is cook the noodles like normal. These noodles that you just lay in the dish and top with the soups etc never expanded and any that stuck out were dried out. Will be removing this recipe from my kept ones. No disrespect to the creator of the recipe as I understand people’s tastes are different. It’s missing something.

I read the reviews half way in, so decided to keep the foil on the whole time, tossed the mixture midway, and added 1cup shredded mozzarella cheese to lessen the dryness. It was bland so we added Worcestershire sauce afterwards. Not great, we called it ‘belly fill’. Won’t be making it again.

The only thing I would change is parboil the noodles-ours came out crunchy. The favor was good though

I haven't tried this yet. Does anyone know if gluten-free noodles would work? I haven't tried using uncooked gluten-free noodles in a baked casserole. I used to do a casserole similar to this with wheat noodles and it was yummy.

The recipe is fine, easy to vary and change up according to tastes. The cashews on top is so randomly ridiculous. It makes zero sense and has no correlation to the rest of the recipe.

Surely the noodles need to be cooked first. Tried as written and can barely give it 2 stars.
