Chopped Steak Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt, or to taste
- 1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper, or to taste
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
- 1 teaspoon mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon ground paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon dill weed
- 1/2 large white onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 3/4 cup finely crushed unsalted saltine crackers
Directions
- Place the ground beef into a large bowl, breaking it up into smaller pieces.
- Season the beef with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, rosemary, mustard, paprika, and dill weed. Knead the mixture thoroughly to ensure even distribution of the spices.
- Add the chopped onion, beaten egg, and Worcestershire sauce to the beef mixture. Continue kneading until everything is well combined.
- Mix in the finely crushed saltine crackers, ensuring they are evenly incorporated into the beef mixture.
- Shape the beef mixture into patties, each weighing about 5 ounces and 1/2 inch thick.
- Preheat a grill pan over medium heat. Once the pan is hot, place the patties on it.
- Grill the patties for 5 to 7 minutes per side, or until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center reads 165F (74C).
Cook's Note
If you're using a George Foreman grill, be mindful that the patties cook faster since both sides are grilled at once. Try cooking them for about 5 to 6 minutes before checking the internal temperature.

The recipe turned out fine for me. I had never used ground beef to make chopped steak. I'm really not a chopped steak fan. However, I needed to do something different for lunch, and the ground beef was available. Apparently, I used the corrected version of the recipe. I did not see the negative comments until I had prepared the mixture. (I would, probably, have questioned "tablespoon" measurements if I had seen them.) I waited to hear the verdict from my husband and son. They both said the meal was good. So, this will be a keeper, and I'll use it again when I need variety.

If you grate the onion it will stop the pattie from falling apart while you are cooking it. Also, crumble an OXO beef stocking cube into the mixture for an extra beefy flavour.

I make this often . Adjust seasonings to taste. I use my cast iron skillet since I do not have a grill pan or a Foreman grill. When the "steak" is done (not overdone), I transfer to a warm plate. Then I make a gravy with the pan drippings with flour, seasonings and water , adding whatever spices we are in the mood for. Add mushrooms and onions to gravy, return meat to pan, simmer for awhile. I make this often. Hmmmm, sounds a lot like Salisbury Steak! Or, shape into meatballs, fry them, make a gravy, adding sour cream at the very end and serve over hot, buttered noodles. What this recipe does is make a variety of dishes with a few tweaks. Be creative and enjoy.

My simple recipe was frying my cube steak, drain grease, sautee onions, etc. Add one envelope of Lipton beefy onion mix, add water or beef stock, simmer until meat is tender. So delicious and simple.

ive been making this for awhile and i like to put some shredded carrots in mine along with some finely diced mushrooms. note i also like to pre cook my veggies before adding to meat. they seem to hold together better when you fry them. plus im cooking for several people i just finish them in the oven while i prepare the rest of the meal

I took out the dill and mustard. Used the grill for extra flavor. My husband loved it.

Lots of flavor in this dish. I cut this in half and it still made 3 patties. They were generously sized and I could have made them smaller and gotten 4 and still feel like the portion was adequate. Great idea using the crackers to stretch the beef further. I had some beef gravy leftover in the fridge, so I poured it over these once they were done, and turned it into salisbury steaks. We liked them very much.

Cut the salt and pepper to 1/2 tsp Remove dill and mustard. 1 tsp Garlic Powder. The rest is okay if tweaked. 4 minutes each side, seared, for medium rare.

Using ground turkey is a bit more healthy and comes out wonderful, very tasty! Added my favorite creole seasoning for some zip.

Does not provide enough information on how / what temperature to cook it at; I do not want a "George Forman grill" and even then there is warning!

It sounds like meatloaf patties.

Bland, bland, bland! Needs a lot more seasoning to make it flavorful. Plus scrap the rosemary and dill weed.

Help me understand, if you take 1 1/2 lbs of ground beef, then add a bunch of stuff to it, then divide it into 4 5oz patties... WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE REST? (1.5# divided by 4 is 6 oz, before you add all the other ingredients, so it the patties are only 5 oz, you've got at least enough for another patty using old math.) Then I see many others suggesting T should be t... ... and I can only conclude the public school system has failed us.

This is like something I make, but I consider it to be Salisbury steak. So, this recipe should turn out good.
