Deep-Fried Turkey Recipe
Fried Turkey
Ingredients
- 3 gallons peanut oil for frying, or as needed
- 1 (12-pound) whole turkey, neck and giblets removed
- cup Creole seasoning
- 1 medium white onion
Directions
Step 1: Gather all the ingredients. Fill a turkey fryer or large stockpot with enough oil to submerge the turkey. Ensure there is enough room for the turkey to avoid oil spilling over when cooking. Heat the oil to 400F (200C). Prepare a large platter by lining it with food-safe paper bags.
Step 2: Rinse the turkey thoroughly and pat it dry with paper towels. Rub the Creole seasoning inside the cavity and all over the outer surfaces of the turkey. Ensure that the hole at the neck is open at least 2 inches to allow oil to flow freely inside the cavity.
Step 3: Turn off the heat source on the fryer. Place the whole onion into the drain basket followed by the turkey, positioning the neck-end first. Slowly lower the basket into the hot oil until the turkey is fully submerged. Then, turn on the heat source and maintain the oil temperature at 350F (175C). Cook the turkey for approximately 45 minutes, or 3 minutes per pound, until the meat is no longer pink at the bone and the juices run clear.
Step 4: Carefully remove the basket from the fryer. Drain the turkey and check its internal temperature using an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh, near the bone. The temperature should reach at least 165F (74C) but should not exceed 180F (80C).
Step 5: Transfer the turkey to the prepared platter and allow it to drain for 10 to 15 minutes. Serve warm and enjoy!
Recipe Tip
You can use vegetable oil instead of peanut oil for frying the turkey if preferred.

Here's a revised version of your review: "After trying this new method, we have decided to never bake or grill a turkey for Thanksgiving again! A fantastic tip for those looking to add a burst of flavor: get yourself an injector and blend your preferred seasonings generously with a cup of melted butter - we particularly enjoy incorporating creole seasonings like chili powder, cayenne, or Emeril's Essence. For an extra kick, consider adding half a cup of beer to the mix. Alternatively, you can opt for pre-mixed injectable seasonings. Inject the turkey with the buttery concoction, sprinkle some seasonings on the outside, and place it in a non-scented trash bag in the refrigerator overnight for at least 8 hours. Then, fry it in peanut oil. Not only will the meat turn out exceptionally tender, but it will also be packed with extraordinary flavors! Your Thanksgiving guests are sure to savor the unique and delicious taste of the turkey."

Review: If you've never tried fried turkey, you're seriously missing out. Once you experience the juicy, flavorful goodness of a fried bird, you won't ever want to go back to baking one. Here are a couple of important tips to help you achieve turkey perfection: First, make sure to inject the turkey with a delicious marinade (I recommend the Fried-turkey marinade from this site, amped up with some cajun seasoning for extra spice). Don't forget to rub the marinade on the outside as well, and let the turkey marinate in the fridge overnight for maximum flavor. Second, while the oil can be a bit pricey, in New Orleans we make the most of it by frying multiple turkeys at once. Consider hosting a BYOT party (bring your own turkey) and have your family and friends chip in for the oil. Once fried, the meat freezes well so you can enjoy fried turkey delights long after Thanksgiving. And finally, when it comes to lowering the bird into the hot oil, use a pulley system for safety reasons. Remember, keep children and pets far away from the frying station to avoid any accidents. Happy frying!

I tried this recipe and absolutely loved it! However, I made a small tweak - instead of just sprinkling creole seasoning, I melted butter, mixed it with creole seasoning, injected it throughout the dish, and then sprinkled more creole on top. It added an extra layer of flavor that was simply delicious!

Review: Follow these safety tips for frying a turkey: 1. Stand the turkey in the cooking pot and fill it with water before taking it out of the bag. This will help determine the amount of oil needed. 2. Ensure the turkey is dry and inject seasonings right before frying. 3. Turn off the propane before placing the turkey in the oil to prevent any bubbling over incidents. Remember to relight the propane afterward.

I tried the Creole rub and Creole injection without adding onion in the second round.

Delicious! My whole family enjoyed it. My turkey did come out darker around the skin, probably because I accidentally kept it at 400 degrees. It took me a while to lower the temperature from there as the oil and turkey retained the heat, but the flavor of the turkey was amazing!

I didn't have creole spice on hand, so I looked up a recipe to make my own and went ahead with it...it turned out fantastic and we all enjoyed it! Thank you for sharing! This was also my first time deep-frying a turkey =0)
