Ham Bone and Green Split Pea Soup Recipe
Original recipe (1X) yields 8 servings
Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon butter
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- 4 stalks celery, diced
- large carrot, shredded
- white onion, diced
- Salt, to taste
- 3 cups split peas, rinsed
- 3 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
- 1 ham bone
- 5 cups chicken stock
- 2 cups water, or as needed
- 1 cup diced ham
- Ground black pepper, to taste
Directions:
Step 1: Gather all the ingredients and prepare them for cooking.
Step 2: In a stockpot or Dutch oven, melt butter and olive oil over medium-low heat.
Step 3: Add the diced celery, shredded carrot, onion, and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes or until the vegetables are tender.
Step 4: Stir in the rinsed split peas and thinly sliced garlic.
Step 5: Nestle the ham bone into the pot, then pour in the chicken stock and add the diced ham.
Step 6: Add enough water so that the liquid sits about 1 inches from the top of the pot. Bring the mixture to a boil.
Step 7: Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer. Stir every 30 minutes, scraping the bottom of the pot to avoid sticking. Continue simmering for about 2 hours, or until the peas are mostly disintegrated.
Step 8: Every hour, turn the ham bone and skim the surface for excess fat.
Step 9: Once the peas are fully cooked and broken down, remove the ham bone from the pot and place it on a cutting board to cool. When it's cool enough to handle, remove any meat from the bone and cut it into bite-sized pieces.
Step 10: Stir the diced ham meat back into the soup and heat through. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

I loved this recipe! Don’t change a thing. I had to use a slow cooker because I was out all day and I might have added to much water because of the size of the pot. Consequently it was a tad thinner than I wanted after 6 hours. Solved that problem by adding a cup of milk and continued cooking on low for a total of 8 hours.

Made in Ninja 3 in 1 & slow cooked on high for 3 hours after sautéing veges. Also added a ham bone I had leftover for stock because I had it & I didn’t have enough chicken stock. Added some diced potatoes & I sliced the carrots (about a cup) because I like them like that. Came out delicious!

I like the recipe, simple packed with flavor. I substituted carrot with sweet potato, and pork ham bone with smoked turkey. Other changes I made was browning the smoked turkey first then adding in the veggies to saute. Yummmmm

Add a couple of bay leaves to give it that extra flavour. I made this soup twice in the past 3 weeks. First time I didn't have any bay leaves. Second time, I made sure I did. What a difference!

I made stock from ham bone and beer I cooked ham in. I add a few diced potatoes and 6 ounces of dried whole green peas because they don't get as soft as the split peas. Pea Soup is about texture so cook it to your liking.

This turned out amazing! I used one box of chicken stock and water for the rest. Also added a couple chopped parsnips and probably double the amount of onions, celery, and carrots since I wanted it to be denser in veggies. Husband loved it!

Great soup! I did it kind of backwards, simmering the ham bone in water first for about 45 minutes, then adding the veggies and simmering for another 75 minutes. To avoid too much liquid, I used dry chicken bouillon instead of stock/broth. I also used a pea soup mix with lentils and pearl barley instead of split peas. But it turned out great anyway!

I will definitely be making this again. I increased the onion to 1/2 but will be increasing it again next time. I also increased the amount of carrots and celery quite a bit. I also added a 12 oz can of jalapenos which gave it a nice strong kick. I also added about 6 or 7 pieces of bacon.

Great soup! I could not find a Hambone at my local grocery store so I used hamhocks instead and just under a pound of thick sliced ham. So I scraped off the meat from the hamhocks and the soup really came out great!

Super easy and it smells heavenly during cooking. I added 2 more cloves of garlic, just because we are garlic fans. Soup turned out great. The sign of approval will be when my parents taste it!

Only added 2 potatoes diced and increased onion to 1/2 large onion. Delicious!

Delicious!! Can it only be about 207 calories per serving? I couldn't find regular split peas so had to use split chick peas which needed to be soaked for 4-6 hours. I only soaked them for 2-ish. I was planning on taking it away this weekend, but want to keep it all for myself!
