French-Fried Onion Chicken

Ingredients

  • 1 cups French-fried onions, crushed
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 pound skinless, boneless chicken breast halves

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400F (200C).
  2. Place the crushed French-fried onions in a shallow bowl.
  3. In a separate shallow bowl, pour the beaten egg.
  4. Dip each chicken breast half into the beaten egg, ensuring it is fully coated.
  5. Next, press the chicken into the crushed onions, covering it completely. Gently tap the chicken to remove any excess onion pieces.
  6. Arrange the breaded chicken breasts on a baking sheet.

This was delicious. I made the following changes: 1) to the fried onions, I added 1/2 cup of panko bread crumbs, 2) I added Morton' s seasoned salt to the breadding mix to taste ( about 1 TSP), 3) I marinated the chicken breasts in Italian dressing for 3 hours. Very tasty, I loved it and so did my husband.

I have been making this for years, and not only is it easy to make, it tastes great. I found early on that to get the onions to stick to the chicken, you need to crush them REALLY well. So my truck is to put the onions in a big Ziplock bag, squeeze out the air, zip up the bag, and then use a rolling pin. If you don’t have a rolling pin, a tall glass water tumbler will do the job too, but a rolling pin is much easier to hang onto. The last thing I do before putting them in the oven is to sprinkle a little kosher salt on both sides of the chicken breasts. Everyone I’ve ever made them for has loved them and asked for the recipe.

I love this recipe as it's written but I do a couple things to make it a bit more flavorful for us. I do use the rolling pin in a large ziplock for the fried onions. Instead of egg, I use a really good olive oil with garlic in it to dredge in prior to breading. I also pound the breasts so that they are thinner. It's good hot or cold and I can eat it for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Yum! Also delicious on pork chops

Just tried this a month or so ago. It was ok, even good, but... there was something missing. Kitchen creator (not) that I would like to be, I made them again last night. What I came up with isn't perfect, but I like it better. To the onion rings I added one half tsp of Lawry's Seasoned Salt, one half tsp granulated garlic, and one half cup ground up Goldfish®. Followed the rest of the directions as written. Now I need to come up with a simple sauce. Almost 5 stars for me. Edit: Made this again last night. If I like something, I can't stop trying to improve it. That is often a costly mistake, for example with a prime rib. But a chicken breast? How expensive can that be, especially since I have quite a few in the freezer? I realized that what I was missing was a tiny bit of heat so I added a few drops of Tabasco to the egg and half a teaspoon of cayenne to the crushed onions and Goldfish mixture. It's a winner in my book.

Instead of an egg, coat the chicken with mayonnaise! Much tastier! You won’t regret it!

This was a great recipe. I did follow the other changes. I mixed the onions with Panko Bread Crumb's. I beat the cutlets so they were thinner then dredged them in flour then egg, then in the Panko and onion mixture. I also followed another users ideas and let them sit in the fridge for 20 minutes. I then baked them in the oven on a cooling rack so I didn't have to flip them. They turned out awesome and juicy. My whole family loved them, even my picky eaters. I will definitely make these again!

I made this dish GF by using gluten free fried onions. I added a 1/2 cup of GF flour to the mix, 1 tsp of seasoning salt, and pepper to taste. I used chicken tenders instead of breasts for easier coating and quicker cooking. I ended up dipping and rolling the chicken twice for each piece. Any left over crunch and crumbs I put on top of the chicken before going in the oven. I used used 2 baking sheets, the bottom one was a normal sheet and I placed the chicken directly on a pan with holes all over it to allow for fat and juice to drain (you can use a rack on the pan also). These turned out great as well as being easy and fast!

Delicious! I pounded the chicken, added seasoned salt and pepper to the crushed onions and baked it 15-20 minutes on Parchment paper. Will definitely make this again!

this is an easy dinner, and one of our favorites. I use mayo instead of the egg. Ready in less than 30 minutes.

Came out GREAT!. Made a few little tweaks: - Pounded out the breast halves to about 3/4" so they cooked evenly and so there was more surface area to coat with the crispy onions. - Added a little salt and onion powder to the egg wash to give it an extra layer of taste. - Rather than cook it right on the baking sheet, I cooked it on a rack on top of a baking sheet to the hot air could get all around it. Best baked chicken recipe I've had in ages. Was VERY moist and the onion flavor really carried through. I'll have to have this again soon!

I love when a recipe is simple AND a hit! I followed some of the suggestions from another reviewer because I like my food a little more on the seasoned side. So i marinated chicken briefly in Italian dressing, added bread crumbs, and seasoned the mixture. Paired with fresh green beans and sautéed potatoes! Yum!

I mellowed out the onion a touch by adding in corn flakes.

My husband loved this! I made 1/2 recipe. I didn’t have quite enough onions so I filled in with panko and then added a bit extra. I also added some seasoning salt as another reviewer suggested. I didn’t have eggs but did have a carton of egg whites so that is what I used but sure egg would have been fine! Thank you! Also my husband pounded the chicken and I marinated it for about an hour Zesty Italian dressing.

I got thus recipe off the French onion can years ago. I have used pork loin as well. Both are very juicy.

Easy. Instead of the egg, I coated the chicken, thinly pounded with Dijon mustard and then with finely crushed French fried onions. The mustard gave the chicken even more flavor. Thank you for sharing.

I've been making this for years. But I marinate it in zesty italian dressing first. Everyone loves it.

April 7, 2025. Had a couple of chicken breast in the refrigerator from Albertsons. I’m always looking always looking for great new recipes. Definitely this is one that stands out very simple quick and easy. I did add a little bit of a twist. I heated The oven to only 385. I added some Kraft Parmesan cheese To the French crispy onion ring mixture for more of a flavor I cooked the chicken for 22 to 25 minutes the last five minutes I increased the heat to 395 Great recipe the chicken was delicious and moist but keep in mind. You don’t have to raise it to 395. I highly recommend sprouts organic chicken breast. You can tell the difference in flavor, moist juicy, and delicious. Look for the clear and green packaging at sprouts
