French Onion-Breaded Baked Chicken Recipe

French Onion-Breaded Baked Chicken Recipe

Cook Time: 25 minutes

This simple recipe offers a flavorful and crunchy twist to classic chicken breasts. Perfect for a busy weeknight, it's quick to prepare and packed with deliciousness.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 (1 ounce) package dry French onion soup mix
  • cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon garlic paste (Optional)
  • 4 skinless, boneless chicken breasts

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425F (220C).
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the bread crumbs and dry French onion soup mix.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the mayonnaise and garlic paste. Heat in the microwave for 20-30 seconds to loosen the consistency.
  4. Brush each chicken breast with the mayonnaise mixture.
  5. Generously coat the chicken breasts with the crumb mixture, pressing down slightly to ensure the crumbs stick.
  6. Place the chicken breasts on a baking sheet.
  7. Bake on the middle rack of the preheated oven for approximately 20 minutes, or until the chicken is no longer pink in the center and the juices run clear. For best results, use an instant-read thermometer aim for a temperature of at least 165F (74C) at the thickest part of the chicken.
  8. Once cooked, remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.

For as simple as this recipe was, it was pretty tasty. Don't fear the mayo - you cannot taste it! The only change I made was to slightly pulse the onion soup mix in my food processor to get a more even texture. No additional salt/pepper was needed upon serving. The one issue I had was the mayo in the microwave. I heated it for 20 seconds and it curlded - not very appetizing, but I was able to brush it on the chicken regardless. I would leave the step out next time. Just whisk the mayo and garlic paste together, and it'll be a good consistency to brush on the chicken, no heating needed. Depending on the size of your chicken breasts, you may need to bake them a little longer, but I found 20 minutes to be perfect for the 6-8oz breasts I was using.

My husband absolutely loved this moist, tender chicken...so much he ate 2. I omitted the mayo (NOT A FAN) I substituted with 2 eggs mixed with 2 teaspoons of minced garlic. I will absolutely make this again.

I give this a four because I have tweaked the recipe a bit. I make this recipe at least twice a month. I pound the chicken first. I mix the Mayo w/ a tbsp of Dijon mustard instead of garlic paste. I use half of the onion soup mix packet and mix it w/ Panko bread crumbs after I crush the soup mix with my mortar and pestle. I bake the chicken at 425 for 18-20m on a cookie sheet lined w/ foil and a metal cooling rack. Easy and everyone in my likes this recipe.

Just a quick note about the cooking time. Dark meat takes longer to cook than white. If you're using thighs, as I do, adjust accordingly. Bon Appetit!

If I were to make this again, I would cut the onion soup mix by half, and pulverize it in a blender or food processor, as another person suggested, before proceeding. My family commented that while the chicken was moist and flavorful, the onion soup mix was way too obvious. (I didn't tell them what the ingredients were.) Hubby complained he was, "choking on onion soup dust." Ooops.

Excellent. Made this the other night for the wife & I I and it was very good. The only “2” things that changed were they I DID NOT microwave the mayonnaise 🤮 and I added a slice of Swiss cheese to each breast about 3 minutes before pulling them out and they were incredible. Lipton onion soup mix makes everything better from burgers to chicken, might even try it on my Frosted Flakes in the morning!! 🤣. Enjoy everyone, this is going to be something I’m going up mske often on work nights as it’s so simple.

Delicious! I made a mistake and mixed mayonnaise, garlic AND onion soup. Nevertheless, I used that mixture and then covered the chicken with the bread crumbs. The result was fantastic. Next time I will repeat my mistake... 😉

This was delicious my family loved it, and it was so fast and easy. I didn't microwave the mixture and I also grated the garlic on a microphone grater and slathered the mixture on the chicken breast. Once I did that I added the bread crumbs to both sides and sprayed it with cooking spray and put it in the airfryer. Came out perfectly and so juicy. Definitely will make it again.

It’s wonderful. We liked it so much, i used it on Rockfish filets. I used Knorr French onion soup mix. (Thanks Amazon). Don’t whiz it down and use half breadcrumbs, half Panko. Thanks for a great quickie recipe!

I somewhat modified the recipe by removing the garlic & onion soup mix (didn’t have) & by adding 1 cup French’s fried onions, 1/4 cup panko, 1/4 cup Parmesan for the dry mix. Using 1/2 cup Hellmann’s mayonnaise & whole milk blended-combined as a dip. I also cooked the boneless chicken breasts 20 minutes on each side using the same temperature. The chicken came out phenomenally moist and delicious! Definitely one to try again, yummy!

Good, but quite salty. It may be because I used Italian flavored Panko crumbs, which had 460 mg of salt. I also used Lipton onion mushroom cause that’s what I had on hand and that had 600 mg so next time I will use plain breadcrumbs and not a full packet of the soup mix. I also sprayed the aluminum foil before putting the chicken on top so it would not stick.

Stands up as it is. I added fire roasted bell pepper mashed into mayo giving the dish a tweak. Served with sticky rice + asparagus- it’s in season- yum.

I split the breast open and beat them with tenderizer hammer. Drizzle some ranch on it.

Absolutely delicious!! I didn't have garlic paste so I used fresh garlic instead. I will definitely use the paste next time to hopefully even out the flavor. This one is a keeper!

I used 1/2 C corn flake crumbs, 2 T Lipton onion soup mix copycat & 6 skinless, boneless chicken thighs. Next time I’ll use chicken breasts. We ♥️ it! TY Keady
