Easy Upside-Down Pizza Casserole Recipe

Cook Time: 25 minutes

This delicious pizza casserole combines the flavors of pizza with the convenience of a biscuit crust. Perfect for a quick weeknight dinner, it's easy to make and customizable to suit your tastes!

Ingredients

  • 1 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 (15 ounce) can pizza sauce
  • 1 (4 ounce) can sliced mushrooms, drained (Optional)
  • cup sliced pitted ripe olives
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese, or more to taste
  • 1 (10 ounce) can refrigerated biscuit dough

Directions

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 400F (200C).

Step 2: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, stirring occasionally, until browned and crumbly, about 5 to 7 minutes. Drain off any excess grease.

Step 3: Stir in the pizza sauce, sliced mushrooms (if using), and sliced olives. Continue to cook for another 2 minutes, stirring frequently, until everything is heated through.

Step 4: Transfer the beef and sauce mixture into a 2-quart rectangular baking dish. Sprinkle with shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the top.

Step 5: Flatten each biscuit with your hands and arrange the flattened biscuits on top of the cheese.

Step 6: Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 17 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and cooked through.

Tips

  • Add your favorite pizza toppings to the casserole, such as pepperoni, bell peppers, or onions.
  • For a lighter version, you can substitute ground turkey for the beef.

Delicious! I replaced olives with artichokes and used fresh mushrooms, cooking them thoroughly. This recipe is so versatile - any combination of meat and vegetables would taste great.

Here's the rewritten review: This dish turned out delicious after a few modifications. I finely diced half an onion and sautéed it in a tablespoon of olive oil before browning the meat in the flavorful onion-oil mixture. I sprinkled some garlic salt on the meat for extra flavor. After adding the spaghetti sauce, I stirred in some dried basil for added depth. Once everything was heated through, I finished off the dish by adding Parmesan cheese to thicken the sauce. The end result was absolutely delicious!

We meticulously followed the instructions to the tee. Utilizing a sizable cast-iron skillet for both stovetop and oven cooking, the dish turned out flawlessly. I wouldn't make any alterations, except perhaps for the choice of baking vessel.

We absolutely loved it! The cheese was wonderfully gooey, the biscuits were perfectly crispy, and the onions and garlic added a delicious flavor. This dish will definitely be a regular rotation for us!

I enjoy using a corn muffin topping and Mexican seasonings.

I have been using a modified version of the upside-down chicken alfredo pizza casserole recipe. While I haven't strayed too far from the original instructions, the recipe submitter mentioned the possibility of adding any preferred pizza toppings, and my family happens to love chicken alfredo pizza. For my rendition, I incorporated Alfredo sauce, ground chicken (although chopped cooked chicken breast also works well), sautéed fresh mushrooms, and broccoli. Personally, I steer clear of the aftertaste from canned biscuits, so I opt for pre-made refrigerated pizza dough from my local grocery store for the top crust, which I brush with garlic oil. I bake it in an iron skillet, generously topping it with mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. I firmly believe that this version can definitely hold its own against any gourmet pizza out there!

I have made this recipe several times and it is always a hit with my kids. The last time I made it, I used canned premade pizza dough instead of biscuits, and it turned out well. However, next time I will probably brush it with butter or garlic butter for even more flavor. As mentioned, you can customize it with your favorite "pizza toppings." I also experimented with using ground sausage instead of beef, which was tasty but quite rich.
