Oven-Baked Pepper Steak Recipe
Ingredients
- cup all-purpose flour, or as needed
- 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder, or to taste
- 1/8 teaspoon onion powder, or to taste
- 1 pound cube steak
- Seasoned salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, or to taste
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 1 medium green bell pepper, sliced
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms (Optional)
- 1 clove garlic, minced
Directions
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350F (175C).
Step 2: In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, and onion powder.
Step 3: Season the steak with seasoned salt and pepper, then dredge it in the flour mixture. Shake off any excess flour.
Step 4: Heat the vegetable oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, sear the steaks on both sides until browned.
Step 5: Transfer the seared steaks to a large casserole dish.
Step 6: Pour the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce over the steaks in the casserole dish. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil.
Step 7: Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour.
Step 8: After 1 hour, remove the casserole from the oven. Sprinkle the onion, bell pepper, mushrooms, and minced garlic over the steak.
Step 9: Return the dish to the oven and bake for an additional 20 to 30 minutes, or until the steak is tender and the vegetables are soft.

This cooking method is perfect for elevating budget-friendly cuts of meat! I purchased 4 cube steaks for just $5 and decided to sauté garlic, peppers, and onions in oil before transferring them to a baking dish. Next, I seasoned flour with salt and pepper, dredged the steaks in it, and browned both sides in vegetable oil. After removing the steaks, I deglazed the pan with a 14.5oz can of beef broth, allowing it to reduce. Placing the steaks at the bottom of the baking dish, I topped them with the pepper mixture and poured the reduced broth drippings over everything before baking. The result was absolutely wonderful! This meal can feed a family of 5 for under $8, and for a delicious variation, consider adding a slice of provolone on top. Thank you for this fantastic recipe!

I must say, this recipe was fantastic! It's a perfect hearty dinner for four at just about $5. I made a couple of tweaks to the original recipe. I opted for top round steak to keep the cost down. Following the advice of others, I used beef broth instead of water for added flavor. After taking the pan out of the oven, I thickened the gravy with some flour and served it over creamy mashed potatoes. It was absolutely delicious!

My husband loved this dish and said "This is a keeper." Following the recommendations of others, I sautéed the vegetables and seared the meat. I also included a splash of soy sauce and opted for vegetable broth instead of water. Thank you for sharing this recipe!

Dee R. should consider sharing this recipe with her boyfriend and suggest that he take over making dinner sometimes, instead of always relying on her to do it.

This dish is absolutely delicious! I follow the recipe closely, but I like to add some Swiss or Pepper Jack Cheese on top during the last 10 minutes. My boyfriend adores this meal and requests it often. It's reminiscent of a Philly Cheese Steak without the bread (and the calories!). Give it a try, you won't be disappointed!

Decent, but my dish turned out to have a sauce that was too thick due to an excess of flour.
