Cheeseburger Tater Tot Casserole Recipe
Ingredients
This recipe was developed at its original yield. Ingredient amounts are automatically adjusted, but cooking times and steps remain unchanged. Note that not all recipes scale perfectly. Original recipe (1X) yields 12 servings.
- 1 large onion, chopped
- Butter-flavored cooking spray (such as Pam)
- 2 pounds ground beef
- 2 (10.5 ounce) cans condensed golden mushroom soup
- 3 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
- 1 (32 ounce) package frozen bite-size potato nuggets (such as Tater Tots)
Directions
Step 1: Place the chopped onion in a microwave-safe bowl and cover with water. Microwave on high for 7 to 8 minutes, or until the onion is soft. Drain well.
Step 2: Preheat your oven to 350F (175C). Lightly spray a 9x13-inch casserole dish with cooking spray.
Step 3: In a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef until browned and crumbly, about 5 to 7 minutes. Drain and discard excess grease.
Step 4: Transfer the cooked beef into the prepared casserole dish. Evenly spread the softened onions over the beef. Pour the condensed golden mushroom soup on top of the onions and sprinkle with shredded Cheddar cheese.
Step 5: Arrange the frozen potato nuggets in rows over the cheese. For a visually appealing look, alternate horizontal and vertical rows across the casserole.
Step 6: Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Lightly spray the potato nuggets with cooking spray and continue baking until they are golden and crispy, about 10 minutes more.
Cook's Tips
- For a stronger onion flavor, you can add raw chopped onion directly to the casserole.
- This casserole can be prepared ahead of time and refrigerated overnight; simply bake when ready to serve.
- For an attractive topping, layer one row of horizontal tots followed by one row of vertical tots and repeat across the dish.

I enjoy the simplicity of this recipe and have made it a few times for an easy weeknight dinner! however, I did think it lacked a few things and upon making it a few times i made a few changes. I used both cheddar and Colby jack cheese, added the onions in with my meat when browning instead of microwaving them and added salt, pepper and garlic powder to the meat as well. I recommend adding dill pickle slices for serving and even ketchup and/or mustard if you're feeling froggy. overall, easy and kid friendly just needs a few little upgrades!

This was delicious! My husband would have eaten the whole dish if he had the chance. Per other reviewers’ recommendations, I sautéed the onions with the beef and added some salt, pepper, and garlic powder to the beef mixture.

I made this and everyone in the family loved it except my son who isn't fond of the tater tots...I didn't cook my hamburger meat first, I layed it on bottom of casserole dish, added chopped onion and red pepper, then the tater tots on top, then I mixed the cream of mushroom soup with seasonings and 1/2 can milk and poured over top, baked in oven for appx 50 minutes, turned out perfect

I cooked the onion with the ground beef and that was the only change I made. This is good and the leftovers held up well. It just needed a little salt and pepper in the end.

Not the best. Changes: Cook the onion with your hamburger. Use 1 can of cream of chicken soup and 8 oz. of sour cream. Add a can of VegAll, (drained). Season with salt, pepper, and a tsp of Accent seasoning for flavor. Mix everything together, pour in 9x13 pan. Then top with shredded cheese and tater tots in a single layer. I tried this one, it has no flavor and is boring. Everyone said "how come you messed up the tater tot casserole".

I loved the ease of the recipe. However, I tweeked it due to substitutions. I used French fried onions and added roasted tomatoes. It was delicious!

Delicious, but cooked onions with ground beef and initial baking time increased 10 minutes. I also added a bit of salt & pepper

A favorite from childhood except we used regular cream of mushroom, cooked onions with the hamburger. Once hamburger drained we added the mushroom soup then placed layer of tots the hamburger mixture then a vegetable ( greens, corn or broccoli), cheese and repeated.

This was a great recipe, I did add some more seasonings and substituted cream of chicken. Overall, this was wonderful, and I will be making it again. We added some shredded lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, ketchup, and mustard when serving it. It did take about 55 minutes instead of 30-45 minutes.

I made it the firstime for this review! It was GREAT! The next time I want to cut back a little on the mushroom soup and hopefully enough of liquid to give it a gravy feel. We'll see! But the recipee as it is is great for family and friend get togethers!
