This dish was absolutely fantastic, although I made a few modifications to suit our tastes. I substituted 1/2 cup sour cream and 1/2 cup mayo for the original ingredients. Additionally, I included 12 ounces of sharp cheddar cheese instead of the called-for 8 ounces. To top it off, I sprinkled crushed Ritz crackers coated in melted butter, a beloved favorite in our family. I prepared it the night before Thanksgiving, and everything turned out wonderfully. I waited to add the buttery crumb topping until just before cooking, which worked perfectly.

This recipe definitely needs to be revisited. I am preparing this dish once more for Christmas as it is the most sought-after recipe in my collection. It is hands down the best broccoli recipe I have come across. I like to sprinkle a butter and club cracker crumb mixture on top before baking, making it absolutely delicious. I highly encourage you to give this a try.

After a brief calculation, I realized that this recipe amounts to over 3000 calories. To make it healthier, I swapped 6oz of plain yogurt for the 8 oz of mayonnaise, cutting out 1400 calories. I also decided to add 1/4 tsp of cayenne pepper to give it an extra kick.

Here is the revised review: I like to put my own spin on this recipe by using half a packet of ranch dry mix and half a packet of Lipton onion soup instead of using chopped onions. I also add in cut-up leftover rotisserie chicken, and it turns into a dish fit for royalty!

Reworked review: I absolutely love this casserole! For those looking to avoid canned soup because of its high sodium content, there are now no-sodium cream soup options that are perfect for casseroles. Alternatively, you can create your own butter/flour/milk mixture, especially if you're including sautéed onions or fresh broccoli in the dish. It's delicious no matter how you prepare it. I highly recommend adding a cracker crumb topping, and it's even better with some diced ham to make it a complete meal. The possibilities for variations are endless – even adding crumbled bacon can elevate the dish. Customizing it to your preferences makes it even more special.

Many people here seem to be against using canned soup and mayo, but I personally prefer a mayonnaise made with avocado oil for a healthier option. Instead of cream of mushroom soup, you can easily sauté onions and mushrooms until soft, then add garlic and a tablespoon or two of flour to create a roux. Gradually whisk in warmed milk or a plant-based alternative, using about 1 tablespoon of flour for each cup of milk. Let the mixture simmer and thicken, season with salt and pepper (I like to add a pinch of red pepper flakes), then let it cool slightly before adding eggs and following the recipe instructions. I might try to reduce the amount of fat by using less cheese, but I'll decide once I actually make the dish. I hope this suggestion is helpful.
