Maui Wowie Shrimp Recipe
Grilled Shrimp with Mayonnaise
This delicious grilled shrimp recipe combines the richness of mayonnaise with the smoky flavor of the grill, making for a perfect appetizer or main dish.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds uncooked medium shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 1 pinch garlic salt, or to taste
- Ground black pepper to taste
- teaspoon cayenne pepper, or to taste (Optional)
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 1 lemon, cut into wedges
Directions
- Preheat the outdoor grill to medium heat and lightly oil the grate to prevent the shrimp from sticking.
- Thread the shrimp onto skewers, making sure they are securely placed.
- Season both sides of the shrimp with garlic salt and black pepper to taste. If you're using cayenne pepper, mix it with the mayonnaise (as per the recipe tip below).
- Generously coat both sides of the shrimp with mayonnaise, ensuring they are evenly covered.
- Place the shrimp on the heated grill and cook for 5 to 10 minutes on each side. The shrimp should turn bright pink on the outside and become opaque on the inside, while the mayonnaise will turn golden brown.
- Once cooked, remove the shrimp from the grill and serve immediately with lemon wedges for added flavor.
Recipe Tip
If you prefer a spicier flavor, mix teaspoon of cayenne pepper into the mayonnaise before coating the shrimp.

We loved this shrimp! Five stars for great flavor, five stars for super easy to make. I followed the advice from the review by Saveur, and marinated my shrimp in the mayo mix ahead, for about two hours. I did add in some good shakes of Old Bay Seasoning to the mayo mix, fresh minced garlic instead of garlic salt, and added in some shakes of Parsley also. We grilled over a wood fire just until pinked up, took about two to three minutes each side, so watch your grilling time depending on shrimp size and fire temperature.

We loved this recipe. Made a few changes, by adding Cajun seasoning to the mayo. We cooked under the broiler, 2 minutes on one side then 3 on the other.

This was delicious!! I used Creole Kick seasoning with lemon Pepper and Garlic Salt, and after adding the Mayo I put the bowl in the fridge to marinate for about 2 hours. We don’t have a BBQ so I used my air fryer - 400 degrees for 11 minutes with the turn feature. Fantastic!!

Delicious and easy! I only used 1/2 c of mayonnaise and it was perfect for our taste. Also tried the same recipe for chicken breast kabobs and again tender and tasty.

How surprising what mayonnaise can do. I followed the recipe as is except I had no garlic salt so used garlic powder and sea salt without the cayenne. I had no time to marinade as others suggested, and it didn’t need it. Large shrimp (16/20) needed only 2-3 minutes on grill per side. Whole family loved it!

I loved this recipe! However I made some changes as we like a lot of spice. Instead of garlic salt I added a teaspoon of garlic. I also added a teaspoon of old bay, chipotle pepper instead of cayenne and hot pepper flakes. Over medium heat it only takes 3-5 minutes per side. I also added a few scallops!

This was so delicious. I broiled it (3 min each side). I mixed mayo, lemon juice, fresh garlic, and the cayenne together and let the seasoned shrimp (garlic pepper) hang out in it for about 20 minutes. It was like the most delicious shrimp scampi I ever had.

I did use about a tablespoon of Old Bay in the Mayo mixture. Marinated the mixture by itself. Also, I Broiled the shrimp with the mayo and Old Bay mixture spread over the shrimp. It was fabulous! My hubby didn’t want to get the grill going, had a long day, so the broiling was great!

Delicious. I may have put a bit more garlic salt, I didn't measure, but it was perfect for my taste. I also used Siracha instead of cayenne (didn't have any) which I mixed into Light Mayo. I also cooked on an indoor grill, no skewers. Came out amazing. Easy and delicious.

I was attracted to this recipe because of the fun name. We liked this recipe a lot. I followed the suggestions of fellow reviewers with the following changes: fresh minced garlic instead of garlic salt (mayonnaise is already salty) and the addition of Old Bay seasoning to taste. Also, I marinated the shrimp for a few hours before putting them on skewers to to grill. The basic recipe idea was good but needed a little tweaking.

I’ve been making this for a few years now. We love shrimp recipes and this reminds me of being on vacation on the beach! I add old bay to the mayo. Only takes 2-3 minutes per side. Super delicious and easy meal served next to some garlic bread and restaurant style coleslaw from this site also.

Made this to pair with steaks we were grilling. I made sure my shrimp was patted dry before being a bit more liberal with the garlic salt and black pepper - definitely more than a “pinch” to cover 2lbs of shrimp. I used Dukes mayo. Knowing my guests palettes, I knew I couldn’t use the cayenne. I know I would have liked the heat, but I know they wouldn’t so I used Old Bay instead. I think there was too much mayo. Maybe half a cup would have been fine? After removing the shrimp - there was a lot leftover that felt…..wasted. I think some lemon pepper and/or lemon juice in with the mayo would have been nice. Most of the mayo cooks off. It’s almost like it locks in the moisture of the shrimp? This was flavorful and was well received by my guests. It’s super simple so I would make again. I was so busy hosting I missed snapping a photo! Thanks ROXIEMAUI for sharing this recipe!

Not a fan. The mayonnaise was overwhelming and honestly just took away from the other seasonings. There are much better options using just spices and seasonings that actually enhance shrimp rather than masking other flavors. I definitely won’t try this again. Will probably stick to a blackened-type seasoning from now on.

Quick, Easy, Just a Few Ingredients & Absolutely Delicious. I don't have a grill so I used my grill pan on the stove, which didn't need 5 to 10 minutes. This is definitely in the rotation.

I got to say it looked gross before grilling but it turned out very good!

Awesome! My finicky 80ish year old parents and their friends loved this recipe! It will be even better with the shells off, not just de-veined! Instead of skewers, I cooked the shrimp on a non-stick grill grid for the recommended cooking time.
