Sicilian Pizza Crust Recipe
This pizza dough recipe is simple, delicious, and perfect for a homemade pizza night. Follow the steps to create a soft, flavorful crust that pairs well with any of your favorite toppings.
Ingredients
- 1 cup warm water (95 to 110 degrees F / 35 to 43 degrees C)
- 1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
- 2 tablespoons shortening
- 1 teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon white sugar
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
Directions
- Combine warm water and yeast in a small bowl. Stir gently until the yeast is dissolved. Let the mixture stand for about 10 minutes until the yeast forms a creamy foam.
- Pour the yeast mixture into a large bowl. Add shortening, salt, sugar, and Italian seasoning. Mix together by hand until the dough begins to form.
- Gradually add the flour, stirring as you go, until the dough comes together. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 5 to 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the kneaded dough into a large greased bowl. Cover with a moist towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 45 minutes, or until it has doubled in size.
- Once risen, gently punch down the dough to release any air. Let it sit for 3 to 5 minutes before rolling it into a ball.
- Stretch the dough over the bottom of a pizza pan. Allow the dough to rise for another 15 minutes before adding your favorite pizza toppings.
Cook's Note
Top the crust with your favorite pizza toppings and bake at 450F (230C) for about 15 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the toppings are hot. Let the pizza cool for 3 to 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

I really enjoyed working with this dough. It was simple to mix by hand, no need for any heavy equipment like my KitchenAid stand mixer. The crust turned out beautifully golden and had a delicious flavor. I will definitely be making this recipe again.
