Kendra's Maid-Rite Sandwiches Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 pounds ground beef
- 1 chopped onion
- cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 teaspoons prepared yellow mustard
- teaspoon salt
- 16 hamburger buns, warmed
Directions:
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and chopped onion. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the beef is fully browned and no longer pink, breaking up the beef as it cooks. Drain off any excess grease.
- Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and salt. Mix well until the ingredients are combined.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer. Once it starts simmering, reduce the heat to medium-low and cover the skillet. Let it cook for an additional 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
- Once the mixture has thickened, remove from heat. Spoon the beef mixture onto warmed hamburger buns and serve immediately.

Really excellent flavor! I did increase the proportions of sauce ingredients because it was not as juicy as I liked. Several dashes of garlic powder (after tasting as is) made it perfect!

Mine is made with Beer, no ketsup, reg sugar, not brown sugar, and 3T Worcestershire, and double the mustard, 2cans beer that cooks off, steam soaks buns, delicious

Great for a sloppy Joe. Maid-rites beef is much finer. I also make mine with some bell peppers. Don

DO NOT use 2T vinegar! It wrecked the entire batch. hamburger is expensive and I trusted the recipe. There’s NO WAY these are made with that much vinegar. It was awful and I threw them out. Try a different recipe altogether or use 1 tsp vinegar . It was bad.

You’re missing the main ingredient! I grew up in Iowa on authentic Maid-Rites. Root beer syrup the “secret” ingredient, makes them Maid-Rite, juicy & yummy 😋

These were a nice change of pace from sloppy joes, but I don't know that anyone in my house would ever request them since my son didn't like them and my husband and daughter didn't say anything. I liked that the ingredients are something I always have on hand, but I had to almost double the sauce ingredients. When I got to the simmering part the meat tasted a little bland and was so void of liquid it wouldn't hold together. Afraid of it burning while it sat there for 20 minutes I threw in some more of each ingredient and added some garlic powder as well. I would make this again if I needed something to throw together, but I don't find myself serving it to company or adding it to my cooking repertoire on a regular basis.

This is quick and very good. I halved the recipe, since I only had a pound of hamburger, and followed the recipe exactly. I got just a small taste, as they were eaten up very quickly! Very sloppy joe-like, but different from the Manwich I typically use for a quick meal. Thanks Kendra :) ***UPDATE*** I made these again tonight, and once again, I only had one pound of hamburger. However, I forgot to halve the rest of the ingredients, and they still turned out great! Since they were extra sloppy, we used the potato chips I had made to go with it as scoops. This leads me to believe this would be great over mashed potatoes or wide noodles, for a nice change from buns :)

I don't care what you call it, it's downright delish. Actually, if you look on line for Rite Maid recipes, most have Worcheshire sauce, some have steak sauce, vinegar, mustard, etc. Plain ground beef without additives sounds pretty boring to me, unlike this recipe. Throw on a couple slices of dill pickle and a slice of cheddar and you have yourself a real taste treat.

This was a great little sandwich. It was similar to a sloppy joe without all the tomato saucey taste and spices. My husband said he liked this better than a sloppy joe sandwich and even went back for seconds. It was a bit dry though starting out so I added some beef broth and let it simmer until the liquid was gone, twenty minutes. No other changes. I'd eat this again, it was pretty good.

It was good but I put a little honey in to counteract the vinegar

I only used 1 pound of hamburger and kept the rest of the ingredients at the normal amounts (so twice as much sauce as would be normal) and it was GREAT! LOVE the flavor! They're not quite "Maid Rites" but they are similar and even more delicious! I followed the recipe exactly (other than doubling the sauce).

This is a Sloppy Joe, 100% not a Maid-Rite sandwich. Maid-Rite does not use these ingredients. Maid-Rite is not a term for a loose meat sandwich, it is the name owned by the Maid-Rite restaurant. Also, not a fan of the vinegar in this recipe, it didn't work for us.

If "Maid rites" are just hamburger and onion I'll take a "Sloppy Joe" any day. I couldn't care less what you call this they are really good.

My family also uses this recipe. It goes back at least 4 generations. Yummy!

This recipe tastes good but it's not a true Iowa Maid-Rite. This recipe is more like a Sloppy Joe

Original Maid-Rite sammies were made with bull meat. Can't imagine that tradition lasted very long! As written, it seems to pass the Mid-West test!

I loved this recipe! Simple and great flavors. Step aside Sloppy Joe from a can. I changed nothing and thought it tasted great.

I grew up in Iowa, and definitely remember maid rites were everywhere. I remember it being very simple, left the sugar, ketchup and mustard out.
