Stuffed Cabbage Rolls Recipe

Cook Time: 60 minutes

These homemade stuffed cabbage rolls are a classic comfort food, filled with a savory beef mixture and topped with a rich tomato sauce. Heres how to make them from scratch!

Ingredients

  • cup water
  • cup uncooked white rice
  • 8 cabbage leaves
  • 1 pound lean ground beef (can substitute with ground turkey)
  • cup chopped onion
  • 1 large egg, slightly beaten
  • 1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed tomato soup, divided
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • teaspoon ground black pepper

Directions

Step 1: Begin by cooking the rice. In a saucepan, bring water and rice to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 20 minutes until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed.

Step 2: While the rice is cooking, prepare the cabbage leaves. In a large saucepan, bring lightly salted water to a boil. Add the cabbage leaves and cook for 2 to 4 minutes, or until softened. Drain and set aside.

Step 3: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, 1 cup of the cooked rice, chopped onion, slightly beaten egg, 2 tablespoons of the tomato soup, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated.

Step 4: Take each cabbage leaf and spoon about 2 tablespoons of the beef mixture onto it. Carefully fold one end of the cabbage leaf over the mixture, then roll up tightly and tuck in the ends to seal the roll and prevent the filling from spilling out.

Step 5: Place the stuffed cabbage rolls in a large skillet. Pour the remaining tomato soup over the rolls, covering them evenly.

Step 6: Cover the skillet and bring to a boil over medium heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 40 minutes, stirring occasionally and basting the rolls with the sauce to keep them moist.

Step 7: After 40 minutes, the stuffed cabbage rolls should be tender and fully cooked. Serve hot, and enjoy!

I followed the directions precisely to make these cabbage rolls and added rinsed sauerkraut and a few slices of uncooked bacon on top before baking. Although I usually don't like sauerkraut, it took these rolls to the next level, earning them an extra 5 stars in my book. I sealed everything with cabbage leaves and cooked them in my slow cooker on low for 8 hours. I absolutely enjoyed them, and my husband even jokingly proposed to me again. Thank you for this fantastic recipe - it's now a staple in our meal rotation.

I often prepare this dish. The recipe is very flexible. Ground turkey works well in this recipe, and I have also substituted tomato sauce or diced tomatoes for tomato soup. When using a slow cooker, there's no need to precook the cabbage leaves. This meal pairs wonderfully with mashed potatoes and either broccoli or green beans.

My family absolutely loved it! We decided to modify the recipe slightly by using a combination of 1/2lb ground beef, 1lb ground turkey, and 1/2lb ground sausage. We will definitely be making it again for our Sunday dinner.

This recipe has become a favorite in our household! I've made a few tweaks, such as using canned tomato juice or pulpy V8 vegetable juice instead of traditional tomato soup for a richer flavor. We enjoy a generous amount of sauce with our stuffed cabbage. To save time, I discovered a quick trick of freezing the cabbage leaves before stuffing them, which significantly cuts down on the cooking time. Don't forget to incorporate the frozen cabbage juice into your sauce for added flavor. Another time-saving method is turning this dish into a casserole by layering shredded cabbage, sauce, and filling like a lasagne. Regardless of the method, the end result is always a delicious meal that we can't get enough of!
