Chicken Souvlaki Salad Recipe

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon Greek seasoning
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely grated or minced
  • 1 pound boneless chicken breasts, quartered lengthwise
  • 6 tablespoons tzatziki sauce
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 head romaine, trimmed, washed and torn into bite-sized pieces
  • cup thinly sliced red bell pepper
  • English cucumber, sliced
  • 8 ounces cherry tomatoes, halved

Directions

Step 1: In a large glass bowl, combine 1 tablespoon olive oil, Greek seasoning, lemon juice, and garlic. Stir well to mix.

Step 2: Add the chicken to the marinade and turn to coat. Marinate in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, but not longer than 4 hours.

Step 3: In a small bowl, mix together the tzatziki sauce, 2 tablespoons olive oil, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, and a pinch of salt until well combined. Refrigerate the dressing until ready to use.

Step 4: Preheat an outdoor grill to high heat and lightly oil the grate.

Step 5: Remove the chicken from the marinade and place it on the preheated grill. Cook for 5 minutes on one side.

Step 6: Flip the chicken over and continue grilling for an additional 5 minutes, or until the chicken is no longer pink in the center and the juices run clear. The internal temperature should reach at least 165F (74C) when measured with an instant-read thermometer. Discard the excess marinade.

Step 7: In a salad bowl, combine the romaine lettuce, sliced red bell pepper, cucumber, and halved cherry tomatoes.

Step 8: Drizzle the prepared tzatziki dressing over the salad and toss to coat evenly.

Step 9: Divide the salad into 4 equal portions and top each portion with the grilled chicken.

The Chicken Souvlaki Salad is a vibrant and refreshing dish that brings together the classic flavors of Greek cuisine in a healthy, satisfying way. Featuring tender chicken marinated in a tangy blend of olive oil, lemon, garlic, and Greek seasoning, the salad is complemented by fresh vegetables and a rich tzatziki sauce. This combination of savory, refreshing, and creamy elements makes it a popular choice for anyone looking to enjoy the best of Mediterranean flavors in a light meal.

History of Chicken Souvlaki Salad

Souvlaki, a dish originating in Greece, has been around since ancient times. The word "souvlaki" comes from the Greek word "souvla," meaning "skewer." Traditionally, souvlaki consists of small pieces of meat (usually pork, chicken, or lamb) that are skewered, marinated, and grilled. The idea of combining souvlaki with a fresh salad, as seen in the Chicken Souvlaki Salad, emerged as a lighter, more health-conscious alternative to the classic Greek souvlaki served with pita bread. The dish has become increasingly popular in Western countries due to its balance of protein, fresh vegetables, and flavorsome dressing, making it a perfect meal for warm days.

Regional Variations

The Chicken Souvlaki Salad, while rooted in the Mediterranean region, may vary from place to place. In Greece, souvlaki is commonly served with pita bread, tomatoes, onions, and tzatziki sauce. The salad version, however, is a more recent adaptation, designed to offer a refreshing contrast to the traditional, heavier form of souvlaki. In other parts of the world, particularly in the United States, this salad is often served as a healthy alternative to heavier meals. The vegetables used in the salad can vary, with some regions adding olives, feta cheese, or even roasted vegetables for extra flavor.

How It Differs from Similar Dishes

While the Chicken Souvlaki Salad shares similarities with other Mediterranean salads, such as the Greek salad, it sets itself apart with the inclusion of grilled, marinated chicken. The Chicken Souvlaki Salads distinctiveness lies in its flavorful marinade, which infuses the chicken with lemon, garlic, and herbs, giving it a much deeper and more complex flavor compared to the simple ingredients found in many other Greek salads. Unlike dishes like the gyro, which uses lamb or pork, souvlaki can be made with various types of meat, allowing for greater versatility in preparation. Additionally, the tzatziki dressing adds an extra layer of creaminess that differentiates the salad from many other similar Mediterranean offerings.

Where is it Typically Served?

The Chicken Souvlaki Salad is typically served in Greek restaurants or Mediterranean-themed eateries, especially during the warmer months when people crave fresh and light meals. It is also a favorite at casual outdoor gatherings, barbecues, and picnics due to its ease of preparation and the fact that it can be served as a main or side dish. In Greece, souvlaki is often found as street food, but the salad variation has gained popularity in restaurants offering healthier options. This dish is an excellent choice for those seeking a balanced meal that is both filling and nutritious.

A simple yet very tasty recipe. I used chicken tenders instead of the full breast: less work and they’re typically still moist after grilling. We put the cooked tenders (cut into medium-sized pieces on top of warmed pita bread, add lettuce, tomato & cucumber (again, each in medium-sized pieces) and plenty of tzatziki sauce. Very thin white onion slices may be added as well.

Excellent in my book! I didn't feel like making pita bread and was already thinking of souvlaki salad when I found this recipe. So simple, full of flavor, and the perfect dish for a hot summer day. Very light and refreshing. The only change I might make next time would be to use a little less lemon juice in the marinade because the chicken seemed very lemony to me. However, once all components of the salad were put together, the flavors seemed to balance. I used mixed green salad blend as that's what I had on hand. Will definitely make this recipe again. Thanks for another fantastic recipe, Bren!
