Regional Variations
This dish, while a classic American recipe, has seen variations across different regions. In the Midwest, its common to see root vegetables like carrots, onions, and potatoes added directly into the slow cooker for a one-pot meal. Some recipes include additional flavorings like garlic, Worcestershire sauce, or red wine, often reflecting local preferences. In Southern regions, the use of ranch dressing is a popular choice due to its tangy and creamy flavors, which are beloved in many Southern dishes. 4 stars for ease of preparation. I have been making versions of this roast for years. It can be made with 1 can beef broth instead of the gravy mix and water; water & gravy- or broth-, and Italian dressing mix; or 2 pkg Italian dressing mix, beef broth -or water & gravy mix-; any combination works. The sodium content will vary with what you end up using. It falls apart so you can easily shred for sandwiches. Also I've made with top or bottom round for less fat. I usually fix mashed potatoes with it and don't salt them. Leftover beef and juices are good for beginnings of soup next day- refrigerate and then skim off the fat that has hardened.

2 thumbs up! Of all the slow cooker roast recipes I have tried... there have been many due to my hectic schedule, this is by far the easiest and most tasty. I added quartered potatoes and baby carrots to the cooker to complete this meal. The coloring of the veggies due to the packet mixes were inviting. The flavor was exceptional. Thanks for such a keeper killer recipe!

I've been making this for years. I love that you can count on it always turning out as expected. I make it the same way, but add onion to the crock pot as well as potatoes and carrots. I triple the number of packets and water because all of us love the broth it makes so much. It's a "fix it and forget it while the crock put does it's thing" kind of recipe!

Super easy and an interesting flavor, but made as directed, probably too salty for our liking. Thankfully, I accidentally doubled the water and the seasoning and salt were just right. At the end of the cook time I added a slurry of two heaping tbsp. of corn starch and about 4 tbsp. of water and turned the crockpot up to high while I cooked the mashed potatoes, so the gravy had a good consistency. My husband loved it.

This is so good and so easy. I added carrots, onions and mushrooms. I also only used 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup wine. Family devoured it. I had just enough left for a second meal, which was even better than the first.

I dredged my roast in seasoned flour and browned it first. Added a cup of water to the pan, scraped up the browned bits, and added it to my crockpot. Added a large quartered onion and baby carrots, another cup of water and a cup of cabernet red wine. Seasoned and cooked as per the recipe. Served over garlic mashed potatoes. Yum!

Been making a similar 3 packet roast for many years. I typically put baby carrots on the bottom of a 6 quart crock pot with quartered red potatoes (skin on). I sear 3-5 pounds of whatever roast is on sale. Add seared roast on top of the carrots. Mix 2 packets each with 2 cups of water and pour over the top of roast. Cook 6-8 hours on low and then stir. Sometimes, I omit the potatoes and serve the roast with carrots open faced over a slice of bread topped with mashed potatoes. The smell drives my husband and the dogs crazy!

This was very good! I have tried pot roast in the crock pot several times and had pretty much given up because I was never happy with them. I always ended up cooking them in the oven, but I will make this again because it was very good. I followed the recipe exactly except I browned the meat while getting my other ingredients together. I wanted to add beef broth as per other reviews, but I didn’t have any . Instead I added a beef bouillon cube to the water in the recipe. I did add carrots, potatoes and onions to the crock pot.

I use a Hamilton Beach cooker that lets you put the liner on the stovetop and brown/sauté. Then put the liner back in the crock pot and set your timer. Perfect for this recipe which turned out great. I only added a Tablespoon of liquid smoke which deepens the taste.

This recipe is absolutely fabulous! Cannot understand someone saying it smelt bad. She must have had bad meat. This recipe is basically foolproof. We like a lot of gravy, so added 1 T of cornstarch along with the Italian dressing mix and brown gravy mix packets to 2 cups of beef bone broth instead of only 1 cup of broth. Since I didn’t want to sear the roast, I had already emptied the Ranch dressing packet onto the roast and let sit for awhile before putting everything together. I also added tiny potatos (no chopping lol) & carrots to make a one pot meal, along with little celery for flavor.

Made it yesterday. I added green beans, carrots, onion and potatoes, a can of beef stock and a cup of red wine. It out grew my slow cooker near the end so I moved it to stockpot cutting up the meat then. Excellent, tender, wonderful flavor. Will definitely make again.

The recipe was awesome, the gravy was spectacular. Served it over egg noodles only change I made was a hard seared the roast in a cast-iron skillet before putting it in the crockpot to add depth of flavor and it really worked. I used a mushroom beef gravy packet from Mccormick seemed to add a little bit of loveliness.

Super easy and delicious. I dredged the roast in flour before cooking. I also sliced an onion and put it in the cooker before the beef. Since we like carrots and celery with pot roast, I added a few baby carrots and sliced a stalk of celery to add as well. Meat came out tender and very well seasoned. Made a cornstarch/water slurry to thicken the gravy. Great with mashed potatoes.
