The Slow Cooker Barbeque Chicken recipe is a favorite in many homes, particularly for those who appreciate the rich flavors of Southern cuisine. This simple and hearty dish brings together tender chicken, smoky barbeque sauce, and a hint of sweetness, all prepared effortlessly in a slow cooker. Below, we explore the history, regional differences, and unique features of this beloved dish.
History of Barbeque Chicken
Barbecue is an essential part of American culinary history, particularly in the Southern United States. Though the exact origins of barbeque chicken are debated, it is widely believed to have evolved from Indigenous American cooking methods that used open flames and smoking techniques. Early barbecue recipes were often made with pork, but over time, chicken became a popular alternative due to its widespread availability and affordability. The slow-cooked version of barbeque chicken, made popular by the convenience of the slow cooker, has become a staple in many households, making it an ideal dish for busy families and gatherings.
Regional Variations
While the slow-cooked barbeque chicken recipe is beloved nationwide, regional variations do exist. In the Southern U.S., barbeque is typically served with tangy vinegar-based sauces, while in other areas, such as the Midwest, a sweeter tomato-based sauce is more common. Some regions might include additional spices or even local ingredients like mustard or honey. The recipe for Slow Cooker Barbeque Chicken uses a balance of sweet and tangy flavors, with brown sugar, vinegar, and garlic powder, which reflects a typical Southern approach, though adjustments are often made based on personal preferences.
How This Dish Differs from Similar Recipes
Slow Cooker Barbeque Chicken stands out from other chicken recipes, particularly traditional grilled barbeque chicken. The key difference lies in the cooking method: while grilling imparts a smoky char and crispy texture, slow cooking results in incredibly tender, fall-off-the-bone meat that absorbs the flavors of the sauce deeply. Additionally, the use of a slow cooker allows for hands-off preparation, making it a convenient choice for busy individuals or families looking to enjoy a delicious, hearty meal without much effort.
Where Is It Typically Served?
This dish is often served in casual settings such as family dinners, barbecues, and potlucks. It is a popular choice for gatherings due to its simplicity and ability to be made in large quantities. Slow Cooker Barbeque Chicken can be served on its own or as part of a meal with side dishes such as coleslaw, cornbread, or baked beans. It's also great as a filling for sandwiches or wraps, making it a versatile addition to many types of meals.

I liked this, but I did with it what I do with another recipe...I put the chicken in plain first (spray crock with cooking spray), let it cook for 3-4 hours on HIGH, DRAIN it, then add the sauce & continue to cook on HIGH for about 30 min. to 1 hr. longer. This way, it isn't too watery! The chicken is so tender made this way, my family loves it.

Directions should be tweaked. 1) Pat each piece of chicken VERY Dry. Sprinkle lightly with kosher salt. Place chicken on a plate w/a few paper towels or rack over a plate or tray. Let sit 12 to 24 hrs uncovered. This will help get that moisture out...Meats are often packed with salt water added. So thr will come out when cooked. OR IF you can afford it, buy air dried chicken. It is pricy...but at least you are not buying water on sale.

Great recipe. Change I have made after making this once: I used "Captain Morgan Spiced Rum " instead of vinegar ( we didn't like the vinegar taste.) Turned out fantastic!! The spiced rum really did the trick. My crock pot ceramic liner had a crack so I put all in a Dutch oven, brought it to a boil on the stove then placed in a 225 degree oven for 5 hours. reminder to self: purchase new crock pot

Wrapped each piece in aluminum foil and it kept chicken moist and infused sauce into chicken. Was fantastic!

The last step is missing to make it Southern style chicken barbeque: remove the chicken and shred it using two forks. The shredded chicken can be mixed with the extra juices to add moisture and flavor. Serve on a bun with cole slaw.

It seemed weird to me that it could cook for 4 - 6 hours. That's a big range! I made only two large chicken breasts so I cut the ingredients for the sauce in half but followed the recipe and cooked it for 5 hours. I used Sonny's Sweet BBQ Sauce and wondered if adding the brown sugar would make it too sweet, but it didn't. It was very yummy. As others have commented, it makes a LOT of sauce and it is very runny. When (not if) I make it again, I will make 1/4 of the sauce for two breasts unless I am serving it with rice or something to sop it up. Hubby liked it and said I should make it again. Not exactly diet food, but what the heck. It was easy and very tasty! We had enough left overs to have pulled chicken on a bun later on.

Followed another reviewer’s suggestion to cook the chicken alone on high and then drain before adding the sauce. Good recipe.

It turned out very good. I would make this again. When making only two chicken breasts use only half the bottle of sauce but if using savory sauce try leaving the amount of brown sugar the same, otherwise cut everything else in half also. I drained the chicken before pouring the sauce over, I basted the chicken a couple of times with the sauce during the last hour of the cooking process.

Did like others recommend, chicken for 4 hrs removed liquid, then added the sauce, but I put the chicken on a bed of chopped onion and saved the stock along with some of the onion and chicken for soup. I also skipped the brown sugar and used fresh chopped garlic instead of powder. We liked that the vinegar and pepper made the sweet baby rays more tangy with more complex flavor.

This was okay. It did taste a bit vinegary, but other than that, it was nice. I tossed in a carrot and half an onion to fill space as I only had a little bit of BBQ sauce but was only cooking two thighs, so it all worked well. I did follow suggestions of cooking on high for a couple of hours, draining the liquid and proceeding from there. Seemed to work well. Will do again as an easy late working day dinner.

Yes, I never use brown sugar in any recipe. I use the exact same amount of yacon syrup. It is sweet, natural, and zero sugar! One of my husband's favorites! I make a lot of all recipes slow cooker meals. There is enough for 4 meals (I sometimes throw in an extra one or two chicken breasts) and I freeze 3 meals. If I have any leftovers after I unthaw a meal my husband refreezes and takes it for a lunch another day! He say double win.
