- 2 (14.5 ounce) cans diced stewed tomatoes with chili seasonings

This hearty and healthy Sweet Potato Chili is a great option for a warm, filling meal. Combining tender sweet potatoes, savory meats, beans, and a blend of spices, it's a comforting dish that's perfect for chilly evenings. Whether you're making it for a family dinner or a casual gathering, this chili is sure to impress.
History of Sweet Potato Chili
Chili, as a dish, has deep roots in American history, with regional variations spanning across the United States, particularly in Texas, New Mexico, and Northern Mexico. However, the introduction of sweet potatoes to chili recipes is a more recent adaptation, often found in vegetarian or health-conscious versions of the traditional dish. The sweet potato's natural sweetness and heartiness make it an ideal complement to the savory and spicy components of chili, offering a delightful contrast in flavors. While the exact origin of the Sweet Potato Chili recipe is hard to pinpoint, it has grown in popularity as a nutritious alternative to more classic chili recipes, especially in the Southern and Southwestern United States, where both chili and sweet potatoes are staples in local cuisine.
Regional Variations and Features
Sweet Potato Chili, like many chili recipes, has regional twists depending on the ingredients and spices used. In more traditional Texas-style chili, you might not find any beans, and the dish focuses more on meat and chili peppers. However, in versions like this one, sweet potatoes add a natural sweetness that balances the heat and spice, making it a richer and more comforting dish. The inclusion of beans, black beans in particular, is also a common feature in many Southwestern chili recipes, offering additional texture and protein. The seasoning blendfeaturing chili powder, cumin, cinnamon, and cayennecreates a unique flavor profile that is distinctly different from a typical meat-based chili.
Differences from Similar Dishes
What sets Sweet Potato Chili apart from traditional chili is the use of sweet potatoes as the main starch component. This gives the dish a creamy texture and a touch of natural sweetness, contrasting the heat from the spices. Unlike many chili recipes that rely on beans and meat as the main ingredients, Sweet Potato Chili combines both beans and sweet potatoes to create a more balanced, wholesome dish. It is also a popular choice for those seeking vegetarian or even vegan options, as it can easily be adapted by omitting the meat and using plant-based alternatives.
Where Sweet Potato Chili is Typically Served
Sweet Potato Chili is a versatile dish that can be served in a variety of settings. It's often found at family dinners, especially during the colder months, as it's filling and can easily feed a crowd. It's also a popular choice for potlucks, where its hearty nature and bold flavors make it a crowd favorite. In addition, many restaurants that specialize in comfort food or health-conscious meals offer their own versions of Sweet Potato Chili. It's commonly paired with cornbread or served with toppings like shredded cheese, avocado, or sour cream for added flavor and texture.
Interesting Facts
1. Sweet potatoes are a rich source of vitamins, particularly vitamin A and vitamin C, making them a nutritious addition to chili. In fact, just one serving of Sweet Potato Chili provides a good portion of your daily vitamin needs.
2. The use of cinnamon in this chili is an interesting twist. While cinnamon is commonly associated with sweet dishes, it adds warmth and depth to the chili, complementing the other spices and balancing the sweet potatoes' flavor.
3. Sweet potatoes are native to Central and South America and have been cultivated for thousands of years. They became a staple in the diets of many Indigenous groups long before they became popular in modern American cuisine.
4. This chili can be made ahead of time and frozen, making it an excellent option for meal prepping or for preparing large batches for future meals.

My whole family loved it! I did use all ground beef. I put the ground beef in raw with step one, but only cooked on high about an hour, then switched to low. Left out the cinnamon (just now realized that). Had to sub a garden fresh bell pepper for the celery. I also didn't add the water, my slow cooker seems to make a lot of water on its own. I only had diced tomatoes so I subbed the Black Beans for a can of chili beans (gave me the chili seasonings that the chili tomatoes would have). We love flavor, so my pinches were probably more like spoonfuls (except no salt, we have to eat low sodium). I also forgot the corn. Delish!! I can't wait for the leftovers. Today I'm going to eat it more like a dip on garden veggie crackers.

Excellent. I’m a no allium vegetarian so I made the following changes based on that and what I had: - Added a carrot and bell pepper. Omitted any onions/garlic/meat ingredients. - Used plant based mince. - Used 1 28-oz can of whole tomatoes (I later hand crushed it) plus a 2 oz can of diced green chilies and a pinch of cayenne. - Added 1/4 cup of water. - Used a total of 1.5 tsp of salt, 1/4 tsp of pepper, and 1 tsp of mushroom powder. - Cooked for the same amount of time as the recipe. Came out perfect - hearty and flavorful with the perfect hint of heat.

I use 97%3 %Ground Round, also hot Italian sausage, fresh garlic, oregano. I added roasted green bell peppers to complement the celery and onion. Sauteed the onions celery bell pepper with garlic then I browned the meats, added all the ingredients and cooked in my pressure cooker 10 minutes .

I just made this for the second time this week. I used ground elk for my protein and I adapted it to be cooked on the stovetop. Just brown the onions and ground meat and then simmer all the ingredients until tender, about 20 minutes. Us three adults enjoy the ingredient combo!

I put all the ingredients (tweeted some of the spices to my tastes) in a stockpot and simmered for an hour. No pre browning, and NO meat products, excellent Vegan dinner!!

Made it without crock pot using some frozen precooked sweet potatoes. Omitted celery in place of extra fresh tomatoes I had. Browned everything up and let simmer an extra 30 minutes. Husband declared it even better the 2nd day.

Easy to make and very tasty. I cooked the sweet potatoes, cinnamon and cumin together for 5 minutes to develop the flavor of the spices. I then sweated the onions with the chili powder. I added a pinch of sugar to cut down on the acid of the tomatoes and tomato sauce. I don't like ground turkey so I used ground bison instead. Cooked on high for 3 hours and the potatoes were tender, dropped it to low, added the final ingredients & cooked for another hour. Served with corn bread and topped with green onions and cheese.

This was delicious! I knew I wasn't going to be able to cook it in two steps so I put all the ingredients in the crockpot together the night before with a little extra water. I also used a whole pound of browned turkey, rather than 1/2 turkey 1/2 beef. I took it out of the fridge in the morning, turned it on low and let it cook all day while I worked (10+ hours). As suggested, I garnished with chopped avocado and green onions ~ beautiful as well as tasty!

Made this stove top vs. crock pot. Worked out great! Trying to find healthier, low calorie, versions of food you like that will also taste good is getting much easier with all the great turkey products out there. This was rich and filling and I was able to cut the calorie count down to 190 calories a portion using the 99% lean ground turkey breast. I did add more chili powder and cumin than the recipe called for. Personal preference. A squeeze of fresh lime and cilantro were the perfect finish to add some acid to counter the sweetness of the potato. Husband and son loved it. It also FREEZES very well, so make a big batch!! Will definitely make again.

REALLY good and very easy to make! Followed all directions except I browned a pound of ground beef with the onions and a clove of minced garlic (about 1/2tsp), drained the oil and then added everything into the slow cooker at the same time. Cooked on low for about 8-12hrs, stirring a couple times during that period (as other reviewers mentioned that the sweet potatoes didn’t cook all the way through). Mine turned out wonderfully and was very tasty! The cinnamon really does make the difference and you will be glad you added it. Freezing it to see how well it tastes when thawed so I will let you all know but I suspect it will be just as good :)

Delicious! I sauteed the onion and celery in olive oil, added the ground beef and turkey along with salt and pepper. When the meat was close to done I added a heaping tsp. of chopped garlic. I transferred the meat mixture to the crock pot and added the rest of the ingredients. I did add black beans w/chili seasoning, stewed tomato w/onion celery and bell pepper. The chopped tomatoes had jalapeno so I omitted the cayenne. I also left out the water. I don't think you could go too wrong with any given tomato combination. I served it with a little grated cheddar, sour cream and avocado.

Great flavor! I’ve made it twice so far. The first time I used a pound of ground turkey. The second time a pound of ground venison. I plan on making this Christmas Day with ground beef.

In spite of the daunting list of ingredients, this is really, really easy to make (except for peeling those darn potatoes)! It was perfect as written, however, when making a second batch, I used navy beans instead of black, ground turkey only and added extra tomato sauce. That was all strictly for my personal taste but it turns out just as beautifully. It was also attractive to serve. A real keeper!

Great recipe! I made it vegan by substituting Gardein for the meat, and nobody was the wiser. I added an extra Tbsp of brown sugar to counteract what some thought was intense heat, and one Tbsp of cocoa powder as I do to all my chili recipes. This is a wonderful chili—and very easy.

I wanted to make this recipe, but my slow cooker was not working. I made this in my Tupperware microwave pressure cooker in 25 minutes. My girls are vegetarian so I did not add the meat. This was delicious and a great hit with the family. I will definitely make this again using my microwave pressure cooker because it includes ingredients that I usually have on hand and is quick and easy to make.

I left out the corn and celery and used 1 lb of lean ground beef. I also added larger amounts (1/4 teaspoon) of all seasonings that called for only a pinch. I also used 1 can of garbanzo beans in addition to 1 can of black beans since I wanted more beans but didn't have 2 cans of black beans. Absolutely would make it again - delicious!!!

The picture does not do I?t justice - so good! I made I?t vegetarian this time and think the consistency is a bit better without the meat or I would add more tomato sauce if I add meat the next time.
