History of Chili
The origins of chili are somewhat debated, but it is widely believed that chili con carne, or "chili with meat," was first made in the southwestern United States. The dish gained popularity in the early 19th century in Texas, where it became a staple of frontier cooking. Chili was easy to make, inexpensive, and could feed a large number of people, making it ideal for both pioneers and urban dwellers. Over time, chili has evolved, with regional variations adding different types of beans, meats, and spices.
Regional Variations
Chili is enjoyed in various forms across the United States, and different regions have put their own spin on the dish. In Texas, the focus is typically on chili con carne, made with beef and chili peppers, with no beans in sight. However, in the Midwest and parts of the Northeast, beans are commonly added, making the chili heartier. Some areas also prefer adding additional ingredients like bell peppers, corn, or even chocolate for a unique flavor profile. These regional variations are a testament to the versatility and adaptability of chili, making it a favorite across the nation.
How is This Recipe Different from Other Chili?

Where is Chili Typically Served?

Chili is often paired with toppings like shredded cheese, sour cream, chopped green onions, and a side of cornbread or tortilla chips. In some regions, chili is served over hot dogs, as in the famous chili dog, or over pasta, making for a delicious comfort meal.

I decided to make chili dogs at the last minute for National Hot Dog Day, I needed something fast. This fit the bill perfectly. I increased the chili powder and garlic powder and added a few more spices (cumin, mexican oregano, crushed red pepper, onion powder, little brown sugar, little Worchestershire sauce) for flavor. This worked out great.

Absolutely fantastic. I make the following modifications to the 1x recipe: add two onions instead of one, each cut into 6 wedges, and add a 16 oz box of sliced baby bella mushrooms with the onions in Step 1. Add a full teaspoon of garlic powder, salt and pepper. Also I don't add any water.

Great quick and easy recipe. I doubled the chilli powder, added a tsp each of cumin, onion powder, turmeric and a dash of worchestershire for added flavour. Also used fresh garlic and celery that I added to the pan with the meat and onions. I opted for red kidney and white beans. Great on dogs with melted cheese or in a bowl with a good crusty bread.

Absolute best chili recipe (Fast cook so you’re not overcooking your ingredients). For a hardier chili you can omit the water or broth. In this recipe I also add paprika, Italian seasoning, cloves, allspice, and fresh chopped garlic (towards the end of cooking) (all the spices can be added while browning the meat to bring out the fragrance of the spice). For a nice change up, swap out the ground beef using ground lamb. Bon appétit.

I made this for the first time this evening. With the fall chill in the air I was craving chili, but didn’t want to make a huge pot in the slow cooker and have to wait. This recipe hit the spot! Easy, quick, and very tasty. Like others, I spiced it up a bit more, using more chili powder, minced garlic, some cumin and a bit of chipotle powder. I used a can of whole tomatoes and a can of tomato sauce and did not add water. Depending on individual taste, a dash of Worcestershire sauce would be a good option too. I went old school and cooked up a pot of elbow macaroni. Dinner was a bowl of macaroni and a healthy portion of chili with some shredded cheddar cheese on top. What a great recipe…l will definitely use it again. Thanks for sharing!

Made this recipe tonight for the family. I started with the onion and cooked it in bacon grease before adding the ground beef. When seasoning I topped it with Cajun two step seasoning(it has a soft kick but has a sweet taste to it) and it is a total game changer, highly recommend

This recipe is very bland. I had to add more chili powder, garlic powder, cumin, cayenne pepper and smoked paprika. Family can't stop raving about it!

It’s a great base to get started. I added red kidney beans, dark red and black beans. Doubled the ground beef. Used diced tomatoes with green chilies, regular diced tomatoes, medium-hot green chilies, 1 LARGE yellow onion, 2 cloves of elephant garlic, green pepper along with cumin, chili powder, salt, pepper and a bottle of lager. Still thick and delicious!

I've made this a few times. I found that 1-1/2 cups of water is too much included with the water from the stewed tomatoes and tomato sauce. I only used 1/2 cup of water. It simmers down nicely after the 15 minutes called out in the recipe. Also, I used two tablespoons of chili powder and 1/2 teaspoon cayenne. I came out nice and spicey but not too hot.

Here are the changes I made: 1lb ground Turkey plus I package of Morningstar Farms Chorizo. I added lots of chili powder, cumin, garlic powder and Pampered Chef Wahoo Chili seasoning mix. I also threw in some homegrown hot peppers I had in my freezer. So good!!!

How'd you get my recipe? I do, however, use a can of Rotel tomatoes and a dash of cumen to bump it up. It's chili time again!

I liked it. I added corn and a little more zing. It was simple and delicious. I am not a big fan of chili but my husband likes it. I would like to eat this again, maybe put green pepper in it.

I followed the recipe but added McCormick chili seasoning along with the chili powder, garlic powder and salt and pepper. I also added a few dashes of hot sauce and a teaspoon of Cajun seasoning which gave it a nice spicy edge. I topped it off with sharp cheddar cheese and a dollop of sour cream. Delicious!!!
