Recipe for Pork Chops with Mushrooms and Bell Peppers

Servings: 6

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 1 hour

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 2 cups sliced mushrooms
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 6 (-inch thick) bone-in pork loin chops
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced Italian tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • teaspoon dried oregano
  • teaspoon salt
  • teaspoon ground black pepper
  • cup water (optional)
  • 6 large green or red bell pepper slices

Directions

  1. Step 1: Gather all the ingredients and prepare your cooking space.
  2. Step 2: Heat 1 teaspoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook for about 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until tender. Transfer the mushrooms to a bowl and set aside.
  3. Step 3: In the same skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the pork chops and cook for 3 to 5 minutes per side, until golden brown. Once browned, transfer the pork chops to a plate.
  4. Step 4: Drain all but 1 tablespoon of drippings from the skillet. Add the chopped onion and garlic to the skillet, cooking for about 5 minutes, or until the onion becomes soft and translucent.
  5. Step 5: Stir in the canned diced tomatoes (with juice), dried basil, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
  6. Step 6: Return the pork chops to the skillet. Simmer the mixture for about 45 minutes, or until the pork is tender and no longer pink in the center. You may need to add cup of water if the mixture becomes too dry. For accurate doneness, the internal temperature of the pork should reach at least 145F (63C) using an instant-read thermometer.
  7. Step 7: Place a slice of bell pepper on top of each pork chop. Add the reserved mushrooms back into the skillet. Continue to simmer for an additional 5 to 10 minutes, or until the bell peppers are tender.
  8. Step 8: Once done, serve the pork chops with the vegetable mixture. Enjoy your delicious meal!

Pork Chops Italiano Recipe

Origin History: The dish "Pork Chops Italiano" is inspired by the rich culinary traditions of Italy, where pork is a staple meat in many regional dishes. Italian cuisine is famous for its use of fresh, simple ingredients like tomatoes, garlic, and herbs such as basil and oregano. While pork chops themselves are not inherently Italian, the method of simmering them in a savory tomato-based sauce with aromatic vegetables draws heavily from Italian cooking techniques. This style of preparing pork chops could have evolved as a way to infuse the rich flavors of the Mediterranean into a more humble, everyday cut of meat.

Regional Features: Italy's regional variations are reflected in the ingredients used in dishes like this. For example, the use of bell peppers and mushrooms is more typical in the northern regions, where these vegetables thrive. Tomatoes and garlic are used universally across Italy, though the types of tomatoes (e.g., San Marzano) and the herbs used can vary. This particular dish may be found in Italian-American households or in the Tuscan region, where simple, hearty meals are a beloved tradition.

Differences from Similar Dishes: Compared to other pork chop recipes, "Pork Chops Italiano" stands out due to its Italian-inspired sauce made from tomatoes, garlic, and a medley of herbs. It is quite different from the more common American-style pork chops, which are typically grilled or fried. The addition of bell peppers and mushrooms adds a depth of flavor and texture, while the simmering process keeps the pork moist and tender. This contrasts with other pork chop preparations that may rely more on dry methods like roasting or grilling.

Where It's Usually Served: "Pork Chops Italiano" is a popular dish in family-style Italian-American restaurants, where hearty meals with rich flavors are appreciated. It's often served with a side of pasta, rice, or mashed potatoes to soak up the savory sauce. This dish is also a favorite in home kitchens, especially for casual dinner gatherings. Its versatile and can be made with either bone-in or boneless chops, depending on personal preference.

Interesting Facts: Did you know that the use of bone-in pork chops in this recipe helps retain moisture and tenderness during cooking? Many cooks swear by bone-in chops for a juicier result. Another interesting tidbit is the history of the tomato in Italian cuisine. Though now considered a quintessential Italian ingredient, tomatoes were actually introduced to Italy in the 16th century after being brought back from the Americas. This made them a relatively new addition to Italian kitchens, revolutionizing Italian cooking when they became popular in sauces and stews.

FAQ about Pork Chops Italiano Recipe

Leftover Pork Chops Italiano can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. For longer storage, consider freezing the dish. To freeze, place the pork chops and sauce in a freezer-safe container or bag, and they will last up to 3 months. Reheat thoroughly before serving.

Yes, you can use boneless pork chops, but be aware that they may dry out quicker compared to bone-in chops. It's recommended to reduce the cooking time if using boneless chops and monitor closely to ensure they don’t overcook.

Absolutely! To make Pork Chops Italiano in a slow cooker, follow the recipe up to the point of browning the pork chops. After browning, transfer the pork, mushrooms, onions, garlic, tomatoes, and seasoning to the slow cooker. Cook on low for 4-6 hours or until the pork is tender and fully cooked. You may want to add a little extra liquid to prevent it from drying out.

Yes, you can substitute other vegetables for bell peppers based on your preference. Some good alternatives include zucchini, eggplant, or even spinach. Keep in mind that the texture and flavor will vary depending on the vegetable you choose.

To make Pork Chops Italiano spicier, you can add red pepper flakes to the sauce or use a spicier variety of peppers, such as jalapeños. You can also add a dash of hot sauce or chili powder to the sauce while it simmers.

Yes, you can substitute the pork chops with other types of meat, such as chicken breasts or thighs. Keep in mind that cooking times may vary slightly depending on the meat you choose, so check for doneness with a meat thermometer.

Pork Chops Italiano pairs wonderfully with mashed potatoes, rice, quinoa, or pasta. A side of sautéed or roasted vegetables, such as green beans or carrots, also complements the dish well. For a lighter option, consider a fresh green salad.

To ensure the pork chops are fully cooked, insert an instant-read thermometer into the thickest part of the chop. The internal temperature should reach 145°F (63°C). If you don’t have a thermometer, cut into the pork and check that the juices run clear and the meat is no longer pink.

Yes, you can prepare the dish ahead of time. Cook the pork chops and sauce, then allow it to cool. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. When ready to serve, simply reheat the dish on the stove over low heat until warmed through. Alternatively, you can freeze it for up to 3 months.

Yes, fresh herbs can be used instead of dried. Generally, use three times the amount of fresh herbs as the recipe calls for dried. For example, instead of 1 teaspoon of dried basil, use 3 teaspoons of fresh basil. Fresh herbs will provide a more vibrant flavor.

The secret to moist pork chops is to use bone in chops. The boneless chops dry out during the simmering process.

Made this last night and it was GREAT! I used bone in pork chops and cooked them in a cast iron pan. Besides the ingredients listed I also added 2 cubes of chicken broth; 1/2 cup water and a cup of wine. I thinly sliced a 1/2 red and green pepper which I cooked after the onions browned. I covered and cooked the pork chops for about 2 hours on low in the cast iron pan. I would make this again!

Supper slow and low… I just made it… doubled all the seasoning… going to try triple next time… flavors were still pretty low. I used really thick chops… sear, sear… then to better control my low temp and give more flavor/cook time… I used a crock pot. I got what I was looking for… super tender fall off the bone chops that were full of juices and flavoring from the Diced tomatoes, a can of rotell, with a can of tomato paste or 2. So more spices next time… but still awfully good now that I figured out how to get the juices to the middle of the meat. THICK CHOPS! 6hrs slow and low.

Seasoned and seared the pork. Placed them in slow cooker for 3 1/2 hours on high with fire roasted tomatoes that I drained and added a slash of red wine, garlic, and Italian seasoning. Easy taster meal! I'm sure it would be even bettered simmered. Sauter my veggies separetly so they didn't turn to mush in the slow cooker.

I made these in my instant pot - I rubbed the oregano, basil, salt, and pepper on my pork chops, sautéed in oil for about 3 minutes. Added the onion, garlic and tomatoes sautéed another minute. Cooked on high pressure for 30 minutes (thick pork chops). Quick release on the pressure and added the bell peppers and mushrooms for 2 minutes on high. One word...Amazing!

I had boneless porkchops, so I did not simmer 45min. 15 minutes did the trick. I also seasoned the chops before cooking them, after reading some of the reviews. I served this with mashed potatoes, but I think it is very versatile and quinoa, egg noodles, or rice would be good too. I will definitely be cooking this again!

Turned out great! Pork was a bone in so it stayed moist! Flavors were great but I added salt, pepper and onion powder to the raw chops before searing! I put it with a garlic quinoa and green salad! Awesome meal!

I jus made this recipe tonight for my family and it was a big hit.. I followed the directions all except the simmering time.. instead of 45 I did 25.. n then added the peppers and mushrooms for 10 extra minutes.. so all together i let the chops simmer for 35 minutes.. I also used the bone-in chops because after reading the reviews it seemed to be the better choice.. plus it was already n my freezer.. lol.. oh and I used some red wine to make sure nothing dried out..I finished it off with some basil pesto pasta, green beans yellow beans and carrots... the meat was so tender and juicy.. n the pasta tasted even better once it was glazed over with the sauce.. definitely looking forward to making this again..

I followed the recipe fairly closely. I used 2 thick salt and peppered pork chops, diced the pepper and cooked that with the mushrooms and added some red pepper flakes for a little spice. It was a good dish! I also seared the chops 2 minutes on each side then they only simmered about 20 minutes.

This was Great. I followed the receipt as instructed however I substituted the water for white wine and used multicolored peppers. Also I did season the Chops with salt and pepper before browning them, as suggested by one of the reviews. I will definitely make this again. Lady D

I've been making this for a couple years now. I always do something different. Tonight I'm using bone-in, skinless thighs; seasoned w/ garlic salt, lemon pepper, & italian seasoning prior to searing; added better than bouillon italian herb base; instead of water, used red wine to increase the liquid. Orzo on the side. Always a hit w/ the family.

Good flavor but you have to be really careful not to overcook the pork chops. Mine were done but lost their tenderness with the times in the recipe. I would normally have used a thermometer but didn’t have one where I was making it.

This was delicious and easy to prepare. I followed the recipe but added more spices. Served this over rice. I have also made this recipe with chicken ( thighs or breast’s ) depending on what I have on hand.

I love this stuff. I make it at least once every two weeks. It's really easy and tastes fantastic. Since the pork chops come 4 in a package from the store I always make 8 chops so that we have left overs. YUMMY!!!
