Jen's Hearty Three Meat Chili Recipe

Cook Time: 120 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 pound hot or sweet Italian sausage
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • onion, chopped
  • 1 pounds beef stew meat, cut into inch pieces
  • 1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes
  • 1 (12 fluid ounce) bottle dark beer
  • 2 cups water
  • cup chili powder, or to taste
  • teaspoon red pepper
  • teaspoon white pepper
  • cup white sugar
  • teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 3 tablespoons tomato paste (optional)
  • 1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, rinsed and drained (optional)

Directions

  1. Step 1: In a large skillet, cook and stir the sausage over medium heat until its browned. Once done, drain the sausage and transfer it to a large pot that can hold all the ingredients.
  2. Step 2: In the same skillet, cook and stir the chopped onion and ground beef over medium heat until the beef is browned and the onions are soft. Drain the mixture and add it to the large pot with the sausage.
  3. Step 3: In the same skillet, cook and stir the beef stew meat over medium heat until its browned. Without draining, add the stew beef directly to the large pot with the sausage and ground beef mixture.
  4. Step 4: Pour the diced tomatoes, dark beer, and water into the pot with the meats. Stir in the chili powder, red pepper, white pepper, sugar, and cinnamon. Season to taste with salt and black pepper.
  5. Step 5: Allow the mixture to simmer on low heat for at least 2 hours, stirring occasionally. Add more water as needed to maintain the desired consistency. The stew beef should be very tender by the end of the simmering time.
  6. Step 6: If you prefer a thicker chili, you can thicken the mixture by adding tomato paste to the pot at this point.
  7. Step 7: If you're using kidney beans, add them to the pot about 10 minutes before serving. Stir well to heat them through and blend the flavors.

History of Chili

Chili has a long and storied history in the United States, particularly in the Southwest. Its roots trace back to Texas in the 18th century, where it was popularized as a simple yet hearty dish using available ingredients like beef, chili peppers, and beans. Over the years, the dish has evolved with numerous variations, adding different meats, spices, and even beer to the mix, as is the case with Jen's Hearty Three Meat Chili. While its exact origins remain a subject of debate, chili has become a beloved American comfort food, with regional variations offering their unique twists on the classic recipe.

Regional Features

The ingredients and preparation of chili can vary greatly depending on the region. In Texas, for example, traditional chili often features beef and chili peppers, sometimes with no beans at all. In contrast, recipes in the American Midwest and other regions frequently include beans and tomatoes. Jens chili, with its combination of meats, beans, and unique flavor additions like cinnamon and dark beer, is a perfect example of the more modern, hearty chili variations enjoyed across the U.S. This variation is particularly popular in colder months when a filling and warming dish is most desired.

What Makes It Different

Jen's Hearty Three Meat Chili stands out from other chili recipes due to its rich flavor profile, blending sweet spices like cinnamon with the depth of dark beer and a mixture of meats. Unlike traditional chili, which often uses just one meat (usually ground beef), this recipe adds Italian sausage and stew beef for a fuller, more savory taste. The addition of cinnamon is a surprising yet delightful twist that gives the chili a subtle sweetness that balances out the heat from the chili powder and red pepper. The use of dark beer instead of water adds a malty, slightly bitter flavor, contributing to the dish's complexity.

Where Its Typically Served

Chili is traditionally served at family gatherings, potlucks, and football games, especially during colder months. Jens Hearty Three Meat Chili, with its robust and filling ingredients, makes for an excellent dish to share at any social event. Leftover chili should be stored in an airtight container and placed in the refrigerator. It will stay fresh for up to 3-4 days. For longer storage, you can freeze the chili for up to 3 months. Make sure to cool it down to room temperature before refrigerating or freezing.

Yes, this chili freezes very well. Once it's cooled, transfer it to an airtight container or freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months. To reheat, let it thaw in the refrigerator overnight and then reheat on the stove or in the microwave.

If you prefer not to use beer, you can substitute with beef broth or vegetable broth for a non-alcoholic version. The beer adds richness and flavor, so a rich broth will help maintain the depth of taste.

Yes, this chili can be made in a slow cooker. After browning the meats and onions, transfer them to the slow cooker along with the remaining ingredients. Cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours until the stew beef is tender.

If the chili turns out too sweet, you can balance the flavor by adding more chili powder, salt, or a splash of vinegar to cut the sweetness. You can also add more tomatoes or beans to help absorb some of the sugar.

If you prefer a spicier chili, you can increase the amount of chili powder or add in extra hot peppers like jalapeños or chipotle peppers. Adjust the level of heat to your personal preference.

After making some adjustments, this chili turned out to be absolutely delicious. It might even become my new go-to over my dad's classic chili recipe that I've cherished for years! I swapped out water for a 46oz can of tomato juice to give it a richer flavor. We prefer our chili more on the soupy side rather than too thick, and this change really enhanced the taste. I also topped each bowl with a dollop of sour cream, which added a nice touch. My family couldn't get enough of it, especially my husband who raved about the flavor. This will definitely be a staple for us this winter.

This dish was amazing! I substituted hot Italian sausage and cubed London broil instead of ground beef. I included a chipotle pepper for extra flavor and reduced the amount of chili powder. I also diced a green bell pepper to add some freshness. It was delicious served with cornbread, sour cream, and cheese.

I didn't have the full amount of chili powder required, but I improvised by using a can of Chipotle peppers that I chopped up and added to the recipe. The smoky flavor of the peppers paired nicely with the cinnamon, and I will definitely make it the same way again. By the way, I cooked it in the crock pot and it turned out great!

Rewritten review: Initially, I had concerns as the aroma of cinnamon was overpowering and the chili tasted too sweet during the halfway point of cooking. To salvage the dish, I decided to include another small can of tomato paste and kept my fingers crossed for the outcome. Come dinnertime, the cinnamon flavor still stood out, but the sweetness had toned down, and a dollop of sour cream and a sprinkle of cheese worked wonders in bringing a harmonious balance. Apart from the additional tomato paste, I also threw in black beans alongside the kidney beans and skipped the red pepper to cater to our preference for milder flavors. Overall, I found this recipe to be a delightful surprise and I will definitely be making it again.

I rate this recipe four stars as a solid foundation. I swapped Italian Sausage with ground pork because of allergies, and excluded sugar while incorporating balsamic vinegar for a tangy twist. Although enjoyable, I longed for the kick of green chilies I usually use in chili. I felt the absence of garlic too, so I threw in some minced garlic and garlic powder. The unexpected touch of cinnamon was a pleasant surprise that pleased everyone. Thank you!

I enjoyed the combination of three meats, but found the dish to be overly sweet. It could have been due to the light beer I used, so next time I plan to skip the sugar altogether.

This chili was incredible! I had never made chili before, but this recipe was surprisingly easy to follow. I had to make a few adjustments since I didn't have any cinnamon, so I used nutmeg instead. Additionally, I had to skip the sausage because the store was out of stock, making it a two-meat chili. However, it turned out delicious, and everyone enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to making it again with sausage to see how it enhances the flavor.

This chili recipe is my absolute favorite! It's a hit with everyone. I prefer a thicker consistency, so I usually add extra tomato paste and beans. I also opt for a sugar substitute instead of white sugar, but it tastes great even without any modifications.

I decided to make this recipe with turkey sausage since my kids don't eat pork. I opted to cook it in the crock pot. The result was okay, but the cinnamon flavor was just too strong for my taste. It seemed to hit you at the start of each bite and then lingered in the background. My wife enjoyed it, but during my weekend chili experiments, she found another recipe she preferred. Personally, I'm not a fan of cinnamon, so I doubt I'll be making this dish again.

This chili recipe was a delightful change from my usual. The combination of different meats was a hit with everyone at the table. I followed the cooking instructions exactly as written. Next time, I might add a tad more chili powder and green peppers for an extra kick. We enjoyed the leftovers the following night by serving it over a baked potato – absolutely delicious!

This chili recipe is truly one-of-a-kind and incredibly delicious. I find it perplexing that someone would give it a 1-star rating for not being spicy enough - this isn't meant to be a super hot dish. The combination of ingredients is spot-on and creates a perfect harmony of flavors. I highly recommend trying this recipe - you won't be disappointed!

I enjoyed this recipe personally. It was unique and delicious, which is why I chose to make it. However, my husband did not like it at all. I was surprised since he usually loves spicy food, but he found it too hot. Due to our differing opinions, I can only give it three stars.

This chili is hands down the best I've had in a long time. The flavor is outstanding, completely disagreeing with a previous reviewer. As a college student, I'm always requested to whip up this delectable dish for game days.
