Microwave Baked Potato Recipe
When you're short on time or patience, waiting an hour or more for an oven-baked potato might seem like a tall order. That's why this recipe is so great - you can have a perfectly microwaved baked potato in just a little over 10 minutes! It sounds too good to be true, but we promise, this recipe is just as good as reviewers say it is.
How to Make a Baked Potato in the Microwave
It couldn't be easier to microwave baked potatoes. Here's how to make a perfectly baked potato in the microwave:
Step 1: Prep Potato
Scrub your potato under running water to remove any dirt. Once clean, prick it several times with a fork. Then, place the potato on a microwave-safe plate.
Step 2: Cook the Potato
Microwave the potato on full power for about 5 minutes. Once the time is up, flip the potato over and microwave for another 5 minutes, or until it's tender when poked with a fork.
Step 3: Cool and Cut
Let the potato cool for a couple of minutes until it's safe to handle. Cut the potato lengthwise, forming a natural bowl.
Step 4: Add Seasoning
Season the inside with salt and pepper, and mash it up gently with a fork to break it up a little.
Step 5: Add Toppings
Top with butter and shredded Cheddar cheese. Return the potato to the microwave for about 1 more minute, or until the cheese melts perfectly.
Step 6: Serve
Finally, top your baked potato with sour cream and any other toppings you like. Serve and enjoy!
How Long to Microwave Baked Potatoes
This method works well to create a perfectly tender baked potato - 5 minutes on one side, then 5 minutes on the other. However, microwave wattages vary, so you may need to adjust the time based on the power of your microwave. Some microwaves may require an extra minute or two to achieve the right softness.
Best Potatoes for Baked Potatoes
Russet potatoes are the best for microwaving since they have thick skin that crisps up nicely and a starchy interior for a fluffy texture. However, you can use any starchy potato available, and it should work just fine.
Baked Potato Toppings
Classic toppings include sour cream, Cheddar cheese, crumbled bacon, and fresh chives. You can get creative and try other fun options like chili and shredded cheese, pulled pork with barbecue sauce, or pico de gallo and black beans for a Mexican twist.
What to Serve with Baked Potatoes
You can enjoy these microwave baked potatoes as a meal on their own by adding a variety of toppings. For a more complete meal, try pairing them with a Caesar salad or roasted vegetables. If you're looking for a main dish to pair with your baked potato, consider these options:
- Cast Iron Pan-Seared Steak (Oven-Finished)
- Chef John's Salisbury Steak
- Garlic Chicken
- Easy, No-Mess Baked Salmon
- Marinated Baked Pork Chops

Recipe Overview: A microwave baked potato with delicious, slow-roasted taste? It's possible in just 12 minutes with this simple recipe and your microwave.
History of the Baked Potato
The baked potato is a staple in American cuisine, especially for its versatility and ease of preparation. Its history dates back to the early 19th century when potatoes were first introduced to the United States from Europe. The traditional method of baking potatoes, typically done in an oven, became a beloved part of American comfort food. Over time, variations have emerged, such as the microwave baked potato, which offers a faster alternative without compromising much on taste. The microwave method is particularly popular for those who are short on time but still crave the classic fluffy texture and rich flavor of a baked potato.
Regional Variations
Though the baked potato is common in the United States, regional variations exist depending on local culinary traditions. In the South, baked potatoes are often served with barbecue or topped with sour cream, shredded cheese, and bacon bits. In the Pacific Northwest, potatoes are commonly paired with salmon or other seafood. In some parts of the Midwest, they are enjoyed as a side dish to steaks or roast meats. Regardless of the region, the versatility of the baked potato allows it to be adapted to many different tastes and preferences.
Difference From Other Potato Dishes
The microwave baked potato differs from other potato dishes, such as mashed or roasted potatoes, in both texture and cooking method. Unlike mashed potatoes, which are boiled and then mashed into a smooth consistency, baked potatoes retain their skin and have a soft, fluffy interior. Unlike roasted potatoes, which are cut into chunks and seasoned before being baked, a baked potato is typically left whole and cooked with minimal seasoning, allowing the natural flavors of the potato to shine. The microwave method, while faster than traditional oven baking, still produces a tender, fluffy interior and crispy skin when done correctly.
Where It's Commonly Served
The microwave baked potato is commonly served in casual dining settings, fast food restaurants, and at home as a quick and convenient side dish. It is a popular choice at steakhouses, where it often accompanies a juicy steak or other grilled meats. Many families enjoy it as a simple side dish for dinner or even as a standalone meal, dressed up with various toppings such as cheese, sour cream, or bacon bits. It is also a go-to option for college students and busy individuals seeking a fast, satisfying meal.
Interesting Facts About Microwave Baked Potatoes
1. Did you know that microwaving potatoes can help retain more nutrients than traditional baking? The shorter cooking time prevents the loss of water-soluble vitamins, making microwave baking a healthier option.
2. The microwave method is ideal for people who dont want to wait around for an oven to preheat or spend an hour waiting for their potatoes to bake. In just 10 minutes, you can enjoy a delicious baked potato without the hassle.
3. One fun twist on the classic baked potato is adding creative toppings. In addition to the traditional butter, sour cream, and cheese, you can top your microwave baked potato with chili, pulled pork, or even a vegetable medley for a more substantial meal.

This was great! One tip - if you want your potatoes to come out extra "steamy" and have problems with your potatoes drying out, try wrapping the potatoes in plastic wrap before microwaving. The skin doesn't dry out and get crisp, but the inner part comes out the way it does in the oven.

As written, my first attempt was a total flop. I used a fairly large potato and it was way overdone. I made the following changes and came out with an AWWESOME potato --Wrap the potato in a paper towel while cooking --Reduce cooking time to 5 minutes total. 3 min. on one side then turn and cook for an additional 2 minutes. --When it's done cooking - DON"T OPEN THE MICROWAVE, allow to sit for 3-5 minutes. The potato will continue to cook while it sits due to the trapped steam. This yields a better result, that isn't overdone. -- Add the butter and cheese, then microwave an additional 45 seconds to melt cheese. --For some real flavor, I top mine with butter, sour cream, more cheese AND shredded or pulled hot BBQ chicken, beef, or pork with a little salt & pepper to taste. --YUMMY!!! ENJOY!!

*I wrapped mine w/ a moist paper towel for the first 5 min, then took it off & turned the potato over- finish baking it for the rem. 5 mins. * Rolled it in a towel to soften it like a prev. tip advised b4 I cut it in half. Just a drip of olive oil/salt/pepper/chives. Amazing! When my oven broke I knew there had to be a way to make a decent b. potato-Thanks!

Another helpful tip: After washing and pricking potatoes, massage them with olive oil and season with sea salt and pepper. Then put them in the microwave as directed. The oil helps to keep the potato skins nice and supple and it also helps to keep the salt and pepper seasoning in place. This method works well in a conventional oven as well. People who eat the skins will enjoy this cooking method as it leaves the skins tender yet crisp (in the oven). Enjoy!

I made 2 large baked potatoes tonight. Since I made 2 of them I cooked them on high for 6 minutes on each side and they turned out perfect. After baking them I added cheddar/Jack shredded cheese for another minute then took them out and sprinkled each with bacon bits and added sour cream. This was my first time making baked potatoes with a microwave but, I’ll certainly do it again. Thanks for the recipe.

Only needed 5 minutes total in the microwave, but they came out perfectly. Before wrapping in paper towel, I brushed with olive oil, and seasoned with Himalayan Sea Salt and garlic powder. After cooking, I let sit in microwave for 2 mins before fluffing them open with a fork. Then seasoned with a little butter and black pepper. Finally topped off with steamed kale, and a avocado and cilantro dressing. PERFECTION!!

I used 3 smallish (a little larger than the size of my fist) golden potatoes. Microwaved at 3 minute intervals, turning each time, for 12 minutes. Followed the advice of rubbing with oil and salt, wrapping in a wet paper towel and setting in shallow dish with water. The potatoes came of soft and fluffy.

This was soooo good! I used olive oil and oregano to flavor the potato. Another reviewer added a tip to place a bit of water in bottom of plate to prevent drying out and it worked. Will be cooking another one tomorrow.

I did exactly what the recipe said and it turned out well. I listened to a few user reviews and put some water at the bottom of the plate while microwaving. I poked it with a fork and cooked a large russet on one side for 5 mins and flipped it and cooked it for another 2 mins. I then salted it, put cheese on it then microwaved it for a min, and then put sour cream and crushed bacon on top. Yummy.

To give your potatoes a little extra something, put some olive oil on your hands and rub over the potato skin prior to cooking. Then give the potato a light dusting of Kosher or Sea Salt, then back as normal in the microwave, oven or even a nuwave. The potato will come out with the salt stuck to the outside of the peel like you get in restaurant. Then dress it in your favorite way.

Before putting it in the microwave, I put 2 tbsp of olive oil, 1 tsp of garlic powder, and 1 tsp of sea salt in a bowl and mixed it, then rubbed it on the outside of the potatoes (x4 medium sized). Great flavors all the way around.

I use a vegetable steamer for the microwave. I add a little water and place the potatoes in the basket. Skin will peel off completely by just rubbing a fork across it, leaving you with just the inside of the potato. That is if you don't eat the skin, which I don't unless I am cooking in the oven so they crisp up real well.

So like listen too the part that tells you to ADJUST THE TIME BASED ON MICROWAVE POWER. It’s not their fault your microwave is more powerful than there’s. this recipe is based on their microwave is it not? Keep an eye on the potato while it’s in there and you should be fine
