History and Origins

The Buffalo chicken sandwich is inspired by the iconic Buffalo wings, a dish that originated in Buffalo, New York, in 1964. It was invented at the Anchor Bar by Teressa Bellissimo, who deep-fried leftover chicken wings and tossed them in a spicy hot sauce. Over time, Buffalo wings became a popular appetizer across the United States, leading to the creation of many variations, including the Buffalo chicken sandwich. This dish brings the tangy and spicy flavors of Buffalo wings into a sandwich form, making it a convenient and satisfying meal for any occasion.

Regional Features

While Buffalo wings are undoubtedly a symbol of New York state, Buffalo chicken sandwiches have become a beloved dish nationwide. Variations of the sandwich can be found across the United States, with each region adding its own twist. In some areas, the sandwich may be served with melted cheese, pickles, or blue cheese dressing, while others prefer it spicy with extra hot sauce. The choice of bread, too, varies: some regions favor crusty hoagie rolls, while others opt for soft buns or baguettes.

Difference from Similar Dishes

The Buffalo chicken sandwich is often compared to similar dishes such as chicken sandwiches and hot chicken subs, but what sets it apart is its unique flavor profile. The use of Buffalo wing sauce, made from hot sauce and butter, gives the sandwich its distinctively spicy and tangy taste. Unlike regular chicken sandwiches that can be mild or seasoned with basic spices, the Buffalo chicken sandwich stands out for its bold, fiery kick. It also differs from fried chicken sandwiches, as the chicken in this recipe is slow-cooked, making it tender and easy to shred, absorbing all the flavorful sauce.

Where to Serve

Buffalo chicken sandwiches are a popular choice for casual meals, especially at parties, tailgates, and cookouts. They are also frequently found on the menus of American diners, sports bars, and restaurants specializing in comfort food. Due to their bold flavor, these sandwiches make for a great addition to a game day spread or a quick weeknight dinner. Pairing them with crispy fries or a side of coleslaw enhances the experience, offering a balance to the sandwich's spicy kick.

Interesting Facts

  • The original Buffalo wings were not served with blue cheese dressingthis was an addition made later. Most wings were paired with celery sticks, a side still commonly served today.
  • The slow cooker version of the Buffalo chicken sandwich is a convenient, hands-off way to prepare the dish, requiring minimal active cooking time while still yielding a flavorful result.
  • Buffalo sauce is often made from hot sauce and butter, which is what gives the dish its rich, fiery flavor. It can be adjusted to suit different spice tolerance levels by varying the amount of hot sauce used.
  • Buffalo chicken sandwiches are incredibly versatile. They can be adapted to suit various diets, such as using grilled chicken or even substituting with plant-based chicken for a vegan version.

I would give this more stars if I could! This was sooooo good!! I "kind of" doubled the recipe. I used a 2.5# bag of frozen boneless chicken tenders and tossed in two 12 oz. bottles of Frank's Wing Sauce, a whole package of ranch dressing mix & 1/4 cup butter. I let it all cook together instead of adding sauce and butter at the end. This was plenty saucy and I think I will go with 3# of chicken next time (the leftovers are great)! Also great to use on the buffalo chicken pizza recipe on this site. I served this on crusty french bread with cheese and pepper rings. I am making this for the next party that comes around and I know it will be a hit. Thanks so much for sharing the recipe!

Okay, let me say that I don't think just giving this 5 stars will express how much my fiance loved these sandwiches. Direct quotes from him: "This is the best thing to ever come out of a crockpot in the history of cooking", "I would eat my way out of a bathtub of this". LOL! Seriously, if we weren't already engaged, this stuff would have made him propose on the spot. :) The only change I made was to shred the chicken after 5 hours and then put it back into the crockpot to let it soak up all the sauce for another 2 hours. I served the meat on toasted Kaiser rolls with melted pepperjack cheese. Thank you very much, needless to say this will be a VERY regularly made recipe in our house! :)

I wanted to try this recipe, and I didn't have time to go get "the buffalo wing sauce", so I made a mix of Frank's hot sauce and melted butter. Great flavor, and I liked alot, but it was too spicy for my family. Also, I got home late from work, and it cooked 9 hours instead of 7-8. Totally my fault, of course, and the chicken was overcooked (getting mushy), so I will only make again, only when I can time it correctly. Still was very good with my (couldn't-help-it-this-time)changes. Now, I can't wait to try exactly! Thanks, "crazycatlady", from the "Recipe Exchange", for suggesting, and Divinesoalc21 for an easy,why-didn't-I-think-of-that, delicious recipe!

As a Buffalo chicken fan I have to say this recipe is incredible. Being that I am trying to watch what I am eating makes it even better because you get all the flavor without frying and all the fatty skin. Also this is not only good on sandwiches but also as soft taco meat, on wraps, and in salads. I also used it with some brown rice and vegetables. I took a lot of the tips from previous reviewers and struck upon the perfect combination to solve any of the problems from people who gave it bad reviews. This is what I did: In place of 4 boneless breasts I used 3 very large bone-in breasts. Instead of the ranch dressing packets I made my own ranch seasoning. I did not add any salt to the ranch dressing seasing I made, just used the herbs and spices (There is enough salt in the hot sauce). After 5 hours, I deboned the chicken and shredded it slightly and put it back in the sauce. This keeps it perfectly moist and tender. Rather than butter I spinkled it a bit with "Molly McButter". I like it really hot and using that just toned it down ever so slightly. I used Franks "Red Hot" Buffalo sauce and it was in no way too hot for me. For the others complaining it was too hot use a milder sauce or add more butter. That will tone it down. Also I think by making your own Ranch Seasoning any problems with it being too salty will be eliminated, just remember not to add salt to your homemade ranch dressing seasoning recipe if it calls for it.

I absolutely love buffalo chicken wings. I decided to halve this recipe as it’s only two of us. Instead of using our slow cooker, I decided to cook chicken in my Instant Pot for an hour & 15 mins. I used Franks but realized the 2 bottles I had were different labels. Aghast!! One was wing sauce the other Hot sauce. I had already poured the hot sauce when I realized the difference. So note to self for future reference. I then added the equal amount of Wing sauce. I couldn’t wait to try it, it came out so tender & minimal shredding was needed. I found it to be very spicy for my taste & a bit salty but that could have been my fault due to the Hot sauce confusion. I will update when I use the correct sauce in future. Thank you for an easy meal!

Turned out great. Served on toasted hoagie buns topped with blue cheese and pickles, put under the broiler for a couple min to soften/slightly brown the blue cheese. Didn’t use quite the whole bottle of Franks. Leftovers were a little salty the next day so good thing I didn’t. Either way, a super easy and fun sandwich for weeknight meals or potlucks! Thanks Divinesolace21!

It was the best pulled chicken sandwich.i made this in my Instant Pot, it was done in less then 30 minutes also I used chicken thighs which is much better then breast. I pull on Hawaiian little rolls with homemade cole slaw and avocado. I forgot to take a photo as we were starving. Next time I will do this with pork shoulder.

I can't give this enough stars! I used four chicken breasts, 3/4 of a bottle of sweet baby rays buffalo sauce and a packet of hidden valley ranch dressing mix, low for six hours, then shredded it and returned it to crock pot (with the rest of the bottle of sauce) for an hour on warm. It was amazing! It has quite a kick but cheese and some ranch or mayo helps cut it back a bit. And I normally hate spicy things. Yum!!

Good. Made in the Instant Pot instead of the crockpot. Also toasted the bun in the oven (with cheese) before hand then added the chicken and baked 5 minutes more. Added ranch to top it off. You could really do this with any chicken wing sauce combo.

This was delish and not to mention super easy, as it only dirtied a few items! I added homemade garlic butter on each side and broiled the hoagies in the oven in low. I also added provolone cheese and chopped romaine lettuce.

This was so easy to make that I KNEW I was doing it wrong. Simple to make and delicious. I added cheese and pickles to kind of "tame" the sauce and it was perfect.

Instead of Buffalo Sauce I had none, I chose Sweet and Tangy Sauce, Garlic and other dry Spices. I also placed a Raspberry Vinaigrette Red/Sweet and Tangy Mustard Seed Liquid.
