Baby Food: Plum Recipe
Ingredients
- 4 plums, peeled, pitted, and cut into small chunks
Directions
- Place a steamer insert into a saucepan and fill it with water, making sure the water level is just below the bottom of the steamer. Bring the water to a boil.
- Add the plums to the steamer, cover the saucepan, and steam the plums until they are tender, approximately 10 minutes.
- Transfer the steamed plums to a food processor. Blend the plums, adding small amounts of the reserved water from the saucepan as needed, until you reach the desired consistency.
- Let the pureed plums cool to room temperature before serving or storing in the freezer.
Cooks Note
For steaming, I use the Baby Breeza appliance. When purchasing plums, be sure to select ones that are firm and free from bruising, soft spots, or cuts. It's best to use them within a week for the best quality, as over time, they tend to become softer and more prone to bruising.
For added variety, try mixing in other fruits like apples, blueberries, cranberries, peaches, or melons. You can also experiment with adding chicken, yogurt, or grains such as oats or rice just before serving.
I usually store any leftover puree using the Infantino squeeze pouches, but for this recipe, I prefer mixing the plums first and then storing them. Alternatively, you can freeze the puree in ice cube trays, filling them halfway to create small portions perfect for single meals.
Plums are an acquired taste for many babies, but theyre great for digestion and blend well with other foods. They freeze and thaw easily, making them perfect for mixing into various baby food combinations.
