After reading all the other reviews, I made this using a 1/2 cup of room temp butter and 1/2 cup butter flavored shortening. They spread slightly on the pan, but not a whole lot, and they had a great flavor. Also, for my oven, a bake time of 8 1/2 minutes got them pretty well baked, and then I let them sit on the pan for an additional 4 minutes, finishing it up. Perfect. I also made a batch of Chocolate Mint M & M cookies by adding a 1/2 cup cocoa to the batter and using candy covered mint pieces. Heavenly.

There is a reason this recipe has over 1000 five-star reviews. It is excellent. That said, you still have to LOOK at your dough. I have been making this recipe for years and now my daughter uses it too. I always double this recipe and I always use all butter - no shortening. I increase the flour until I get a good stiff dough (about a cup extra in a doubled recipe). This is where looking at your dough comes in. If the dough is too soft you are going to get flat nasty cookies. Your ambient humidity matters. Sometimes I do half whole wheat half all purpose flour. Lastly, I normally use parchment paper and bake at 375. This recipe is perfect every time. To the 34 people who gave it one star - try again, you did something wrong.

What a great discovery. The recipe calls for shortening, but we halved it and added butter in its place. Then we chilled the dough for 2 hours and I used a medium cookie scoop to create even balls of dough, which we flattened with the bottom of a glass, then placed m&m minis atop. It’s a BIG HIT!

I used 1/2 cup butter and 1/2 cup shortening. For the mix-ins, a cup of candies and a cup of walnuts and I used my smallest cookie scoop. Slightly larger than a teaspoon so I baked for 12 1/2 minutes. Delicious but didn’t make 72 servings.

These are delicious!! I used 1/2 cup shortening and 1/2 cup butter. I always leave any cookie batter in the fridge for 1-2 hours before baking to prevent spreading too much.

First thing I want to say is getting 6-7 dozen cookies from this recipe doesn’t seem realistic. I was able to make 4 dozen decent size cookies. Anything smaller than that, well nobody wants tiny baby cookies! I did make a few modifications. I used unsalted butter, I added half a teaspoon of vanilla, and 2/3 a cup of chocolate chips. Also, I chilled the dough for 20 minutes before baking. And in my oven 350° for 10 minutes came out perfectly. Crunchy on the outside chewy in the middle.

Made this recipe early in the morning which made my husband actually get up from the wonderful cookie aroma. He LOVED these cookies. I substituted the shortening for 2 sticks of real butter and after I had the batter completed I put it in the refrigerator for an hour before baking them . I also cooked them for the complete cooking time of 11min. I have an electric oven so this timing was perfect. They came out PERECT . Love this recipe

We ate the “best” ones right away so the picture does not do justice for how amazing these cookies are. I used half the recipe, 1 heaping teaspoon of batter on parchment paper, and got a lot of cookies. Used butter-slightly melted, sifted the dry ingredients separately and used parchment paper. SO GOOD!

I've been making this recipe for years for my boyfriend's birthday. I put vanilla ice cream between 2 cookies to make a sandwich then freeze them. Soooo much better than store bought cookie-wiches. They are also fantastic without ice cream. I make them with 1/2 cup unsalted butter and 1/2 cup shortening. I chill the dough for a bit so they don't spread too much. I LOVE these cookies and so does my boyfriend!

Sooooo good. Let it chill in the fridge for a couple hours before baking. Lined the pans with parchment paper. I also used pumpkin pie flavored M&Ms for Thanksgiving and they complimented the cookies amazingly. Baking time took a little longer than stated and I let them sit a little while on the pans to crisp up the bottom. Texture came out perfect. Will definitely be using this recipe again with all types of M&M flavors!

I thought these came out great. I might try butter-flavored shortening next time, but I do appreciate the less caramelized taste that the shortening provides, especially how they finish with a slightly paler appearance than a traditional chocolate chip. I refrigerated the dough for 5 minutes, as suggested by the top comment, and then I rolled the dough into balls before adding 8 candies to the top of each and placing them on the cookie sheet. I made 24 cookies and they took approximately 13-14 minutes to cook with both trays coking at the same time, rotating rack and spinning the sheets halfway through. I was worried they would burn cooking them for that long, but the shortening mustn’t brown as easily as straight butter, so they turned out perfectly golden brown and delicious. I let them cool on the cookie sheet for 3-4 minutes before transitioning them to a cooling rack.

I like the recipe. The recipe is fine. However the dough was incredibly wet. It was insanely like sticky. I added more than 2 1/2 cups of flour because the dough was so wet and the cookies spread and had yucky flats. More flour firmed up the dough just right and helped them hold their shape. Anyone who’s ever baked cookies would know that the dough was just too wet. And that’s why people had problems with flat cookies is because there’s just not enough flour. The taste is okay. It reminds me of store bought cookies and the flavor is just okay I feel like. Definitely would recommend more mms though. I ran out and had to buy more. Each cookies has a small amount for the size of the batch. Definitely could use more candies. I wouldn’t say this is a huge banger like most of the 5 star say. Definitely needs work on this recipe

Subbed butter for hydrogenated vegetable oil. Made with valentine m&m's. Would chill dough or dough balls before baking next time.

I did try some suggestions. Used 1/2 butter and 1/2 butter flavored crisco. Also added 2 tsp. Of cream of tarter. Came out wonderful.

These cookies were great! I did 1/2 shortening and 1/2 unsalted butter only because I did not have enough shortening. I also added a 1/4 c of mini chocolate chips and made them bigger too!

This recipe was amazing! They were crispy, but soft in the middle. Plus, they were super easy to make.
