Apple Dump Cake Recipe
Apple Dump Cake
This easy and comforting dessert combines sweet apple filling with a golden, buttery cake topping. Perfect for serving warm and sharing with family and friends.
Ingredients
This recipe makes 20 servings. Ingredient quantities are automatically scaled, but cooking steps remain the same. Original recipe yield: 1X.
- 2 cans (21 ounces each) apple pie filling
- 1 package (15.25 ounces) yellow cake mix
- 1/2 cup butter, melted
Directions
- Preheat your oven to 350F (175C) and gather all ingredients on your workspace.
- Pour the apple pie filling evenly into a 9x13-inch baking dish, creating a sweet, juicy base.
- Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix over the apple filling, covering it evenly but gently.
- Drizzle the melted butter over the cake mix, ensuring it touches as much surface as possible for a golden, crispy top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 40 minutes, or until the top turns golden brown and the apple filling bubbles around the edges.
- Remove the dish from the oven and let the dump cake cool for 15 minutes to set slightly.
- Serve warm using a large spoon to scoop portions, as the filling is soft and not fully solid like traditional cake.
Cooks Note
Any type of pie filling works wonderfully with this recipe. For easier serving, use a large spoon to scoop instead of slicing since the filling is soft.

I made it following directions only we used a spice cake mix. It turned out amazing, got a lot of compliments and requests for the recipe , no one could believe it was a " dump cake " The spice cake gave it that extra "flavor of fall. Will definitely be making this again for Thanksgiving. Will also try with reg yellow or white cake mix for a anytime dessert. Thank you for sharing. So simple, but oh so good.

Combine cold butter and cake mix with a pastry blender till it resembles coarse sand. Then sprinkle the mixture over the pie filling and this should avoid the dry patches of cake mix that a few reviewers had issues with.

Very fast and easy! I used 2 cans of lite apple pie filling to reduce some of the sugar and calories. I took a frozen stick of unsalted butter and used a cheese grater to grate it up and mixed it with the cake mix, then spread that on top of the pie filling in a large glass baking dish. Baked it for 40 minutes then broiled it for a few minutes to get it browner (probably didn't actually need that step). No dry spots on my cake. Spooned up our servings and topped it with Blue Bunny Sweet Freedom vanilla ice cream (also reduced sugar and actually has some fiber in it!). Very good lower calorie dessert and would like to try with cherry pie filling and chocolate cake mix!

Not bad. Super easy, but I had a problem with all the cake mix not getting moistened by the apple mix underneath or the butter above. When i reheated it, I used more melted butter poured over the top - worked well. Tastes great.

Had 1 can of apple pie filling plus a can of peaches(7 oz). Put those on the bottom mixed. Sprinkled cinn/sugar mix over that. Put the contents of the yellow cake mix on that and smoothed it out. Drizzled stick of melted butter over the mixture. Sprinkled cinn/sugar mix over it and baked 40 min at 350. Pulled it out and found some powdered areas so I used a fork to mix those areas with fruit under them. Then once all was wet, I put 30 pecan half's on top, and put it back in the oven for 15 minutes until it browned slightly. I will definitely make again.

I made it the same way, except i used Betty Crocker cake mix and i covered the whole top with salted sweet cream butter, and i didn't melt the butter at all. I also added cinnamon and pecan nuts to the top, i actually let it bake for an hour and then an extra 5 minutes on broil to get the top like more of a crust then cake. Taste just like an Apple Crisp almost. It was delicious with a lil vanilla ice cream on the side. Thank you for a quick and easy recipe. I will definitely make again, next time with peaches.. Hmmm

I made this last night for a large gathering and everyone LOVED it! Made a few changes based on previous comments. First, I used three cans of apple pie filling, one cup of melted butter, and mixed the melted butter and dry cake mix together before dropping and spreading over the filling (to ensure no dry spots). I also a sprinkled cinnamon on top of the pie filling. No one could believe how simple the recipe was!! It’s a keeper and quick & easy for a crowd. Plus - I bought the pie filling & cake mix at the dollar store!!

I used half the suggested amount of cake mix. I use 3 tablespoons of butter. I melted it in the microwave and then used a spoon to evenly distribute it on top of the cake mix. To add additional fruit, I thinly sliced a cored gala apple and then spread the pieces evenly on the bottom of my pan. I then spooned the canned apples on top of that before adding the cake mix and butter.

Given the reduced size of cake mix now, I made this recipe in a smaller baking dish...7 x 10, I think. I used cherry pie filling (2 cans) and a white cake mix topped with the drizzle of one cube of melted butter. Served with a good vanilla ice cream, it was well received by all as we watched a football game. Recently I found the same recipe but with the variation of mixing the cake mix and butter in a bowl and then scattering the mix over the fruit filling. Maybe that would work better for people who found the topping dry. In any case, the topping on my first effort was brown and crisp.

I would suggest using two boxs of cake mix and 1 1/4cup of butter and melt the butter to a liquid then add both box’s of cake mix before add any spice u like… I also used three cans of apple pie filling two sweet and one unsweetened…I also put apple pie spice in between the cake and the apple pie filling and I used a lot more butter due to extra box of cake mix so it wouldn’t have any dry crumbled spots. you definitely are gonna want some kind of scoop because it’s not cake like it’s more like Apple crisp type of thing

So easy. Ingredients I always have on hand. Everyone likes it. So many different fruits and cake flavors can be used. Add a scoop of vanilla icecream and there's not much better.

Made this twice with cherry pie filling and chocolate cake. It's a great combination. I forgot the pan size so used an 8x8 and the pie filling looks right in the pan. My change to the recipe is: assemble as instructed, then cover and let rest for two hours, then preheat oven and bake. The rest time lets the cake powder absorb liquid from the pie filling.

I love making dump cakes and with this one I added dollops of softened brown sugar cinnamon cream cheese on top of the apple filling then added the cake mix and butter . Absolutely delicious!

I've never made a dump cake before so I had to try it. But I also can never just follow a recipe so--since I didn't have the spice cake mix that I thought I had--I took the butter pecan cake mix we had, added a half teaspoon of apple pie seasoning, and 2/3 cup chopped walnuts before I mixed it all together with the melted butter to make a crumble topping. So danged yummy and satisfying! 😊

I loved it and my family loved it!!! The only change I made was that I used fresh apples, 2 red juicy and 3 Granny Smith. I will definitely be making this one again.
