Brownie Mix-Black Bean Brownies Recipe
Black Bean Brownies
This unique brownie recipe uses black beans to create a rich, fudgy texture while maintaining all the indulgence of a traditional dessert. Perfect for those looking for a healthier twist on a classic treat!
Ingredients
- 1 (15 ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
- 1 cup water
- 1 package brownie mix
- 1 cup chocolate chips, divided
Directions
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350F (175C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish to prepare it for the brownie batter.
Step 2: In a blender, combine the black beans and water. Blend until the mixture is smooth and creamy, then pour it into a bowl.
Step 3: Stir the brownie mix into the black bean mixture. Continue mixing until the batter is smooth and fully combined.
Step 4: Gently fold in 1/2 cup of chocolate chips, ensuring an even distribution throughout the batter.
Step 5: Pour the brownie batter into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly with a spatula.
Step 6: Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of chocolate chips over the top of the batter, ensuring an even layer for that perfect melt-in-your-mouth experience.
Step 7: Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 27 minutes. To check for doneness, insert a toothpick about 2 inches from the side of the pan. If it comes out clean, your brownies are ready!
Step 8: Allow the brownies to cool completely on a wire rack before cutting them into squares. This helps them set and become easier to slice.

I was totally surprised at how fudgy and moist these brownies were. My 8 year old grandson ate one, and loved it! I used A sugar free brownie mix because my husband is diabetic, and it was great.

I am gluten free and vegan due to many food allergies. This is the most “brownie” like brownie that I’ve made to date! It puffed up - didn’t collapse or turn to oily mush like gf mixes or scratch recipes usually do when you omit the eggs and replace with flax eggs or applesauce. So simple too. I replaced the water with freshly brewed hot coffee. I used Krusteaz Gluten Free Brownie mix which already has some chips in it, a cup of Enjoy Life mini choc chips and Bush’s low sodium black beans drained and rinsed well. I was so skeptical smelling the beans in the strainer! I blended the beans and half the chips and coffee in my Ninja processor. Until it was smooth and I couldn’t really taste the beans anymore. Then I added the brownie mix in two batches, adding the remaining coffee and chips at the end. It made 18 individual treats in my muffin tins which I lightly greased with light olive oil. I topped them with chopped pecans. They baked for 25 mins at 350 and rested for 30 mins before I took this picture. Popped right out with a silicone spatula! Thank you for a great recipe to be inspired by. This will be my new go to! Btw my son does the “gag reflex” thing if beans come anywhere near his food. He has no idea he ate them. Thought these brownies were delicious.

I saw this recipe and was very excited to try BUT after reading reviews I made the following adjustments: Line an 8x8 pan with foil and spray with non-stick spray. Dissolve 2 tsp instant espresso in 1/3 c water and add 1 tsp vanilla extract. Drain and rinse one can black beans. Combine the beans and liquid in a food processor/blender/nutri-billet. Use a spoon to combine one box Betty Crocker Dark Chocolate brownie mix and black bean mixture It will be thick like muffin batter. Pour into prepared pan. Bake at 350 for 40 minutes. They are sooo rich and gooey and delicious! The entire family loved them!

This is my favorite recipe for brownies! I added peanut butter swirls which was amazing!! After I had THIS RECIPE mix in my baking dish. I mixed a cup of peanut butter (melt in microwave 30 seconds on medium power) and whisked in 1/4 cup of powdered sugar. Drop a teaspoon of peanut butter mix all throughout the batter and used a knife to pull PB spread mixture throughout entire brownie mixture. Bake 30minutes—healthy decadence!

We enjoyed these brownies. I did make some small modifications: I used one cup of milk (ultra filtered high protein milk) instead of water. I also added 1 tsp of vanilla and 2 scoops of chocolate protein powder. This made a large pan of brownies that were a little bit more dense than a "fudgy" brownie. We did not detect the beans in these after baking, and my weight lifting teen loved the extra protein in his favorite snack. The toothpick was the perfect indicator of doneness. I'm storing these in a sealed container in the refrigerator. One of these cold brownies is very nice with a hot cup of coffee.

So easy! I used 1 tablespoon of espresso powder dissolved into 1/3 cup water plus a teaspoon of vanilla extract instead of 1 cup plain water. I baked the batter in an eight inch square pan. My very picky family enjoyed the fudgy chocolatey brownie that resulted. I find that coffee enhances the chocolate flavor very nicely.

After reading several diff recipes online for black bean brownies I decided to try a few additions. I used one cup of milk and place of water and I added 2 k cups of used coffee grounds For Coco depth I also added 1/3 of a stick of butter for richness amd toasted pecans. Oh yeah!

These tasted great! Sadly, my husband could tell the difference before I confessed. They’re a little less rich than when made with oil and eggs. Personally, I like it that they’re less rich but still very moist. I used Ghirardelli Turtle brownie mix and added 3/4 cup chocolate chips. I put pecan pieces on top before baking. Next time I will try some adjustments made by other reviewers and use coffee instead of water or add instant coffee.

I have made it a few times with chocolate chips, but I recommend making this recipe with peanut butter chips. Gamechanger! I also used dried black beans (soaked, cooked, and drained) to make this recipe. 3/4 cup dried beans = 1 can cooked beans.

I was skeptical at first, but these turned out much better than expected. I used Ghirardelli Triple Chocolate mix in an 8x8 pan and skipped the additional chocolate chips, since the mix already included chocolate chips. The brownies had a fudgey, very slight springy texture, and no trace of black bean flavor or texture. A delicious and healthier brownie!

I tried this recipe today and loved it! Used box brownie mix and about 3/4 of a 19oz can of black beans. Then filled (with the beans in the can) the can about 3/4 of the way with water and blended. The overall mix was more wet and loose than I expected but it worked out perfectly. It took 15 min longer to cook than directed (so a total of 50min) but they were very moist and had a fudgey texture

I followed this recipe as written and it turned out pretty well, but it was too "wet" of a brownie for my taste and still had a little bit of a bean flavor. So the next time, I made it with red kidney beans (I figured they'd be creamier and more mild) and 3/4 cup water. They turned out a lot closer to my preferred chewier texture and with only delicious chocolate flavor.

These were so easy, and so delicious! I made them into muffins with a silicone muffin tray. They were moist and fudgy, and they were just as moist the third day as the first so they keep well too. I used a dark chocolate brownie mix from Aldi, so they were cheap too.

I love to share these brownies and then after they are consumed, let the crowd know they have black beans! Nobody ever can believe it! Everybody loves them and cannot believe how easy they are to make.

I liked the comment from RBZA- fresh coffee instead of H2O. Dark chocolate brownie mix & added 1/2 C. chopped walnuts in addition to mini chips. 8 x 12 baking dish.

I was very easy to make and came out great even with a gluten free brownie mix. The mix had chocolate chips already in it so I added half a cup of mini chocolate chips on top and some nuts. It came out moist and tastes so good.
