Cookies and Cream Rice Krispie Treats Recipe
Theres no easier or more comforting dessert than a buttery, gooey Rice Krispie treat. In this recipe, crushed chocolate and cream cookies are folded into the mix, adding even more texture and flavor in each bite. Take care not to over-mix once you add the cookies thats key to getting the dreamiest ribbons (and ultimate gooeyness) throughout!
Ingredients
- 30 chocolate creme sandwich cookies (such as Oreos)
- 1/2 cup salted butter
- 1 (16-ounce) bag mini marshmallows
- 1 (13-ounce) jar marshmallow cream, divided
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 6 cups crisp rice cereal (such as Rice Krispies)
Directions
- Gather all ingredients. Grease a 9 x 13 inch pan with nonstick spray.
- Place the cookies in a resealable bag and use a rolling pin to coarsely crush them. The goal is to end up with mostly larger, bite-sized pieces and fewer powdery bits (a small amount of powder is okay).
- Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add mini marshmallows and half of the marshmallow cream. Reduce heat to medium-low and stir well with a silicone spatula to melt the marshmallows and blend the mixture evenly. Stir in vanilla extract.
- Remove the mixture from the heat. Add the rice cereal and the powdery portion of the crushed cookies, stirring well to combine. Then, add the larger cookie pieces and mix gently.
- Dollop about half of the remaining marshmallow cream over the surface of the mixture. Fold it a few times to partially incorporate. Add the rest of the marshmallow cream and fold a few more times. There should be visible streaks of marshmallow cream throughout the mixture.
- Pour the mixture into the prepared pan. Use a spatula to press it into an even layer and compress it slightly.
- Let the pan sit at room temperature for 30 minutes to 1 hour to firm up. Once set, slice and serve.
- Store the pan tightly wrapped in plastic wrap at room temperature. These treats are gooiest within the first 24 hours, but will keep well for up to 5 days.

History of Rice Krispie Treats
The origin of Rice Krispie treats dates back to the 1930s, where they were first introduced by Kelloggs in a promotional recipe for their Rice Krispies cereal. Originally, the treat was a simple combination of butter, marshmallows, and cereal. The addition of cookies, such as Oreos, to the traditional recipe is a modern twist, enhancing the flavor and texture, and making it a favorite for those who love cookies and cream desserts.
Regional Variations
Rice Krispie treats are a beloved dessert throughout the United States, particularly in the Midwest, where they originated. Over time, variations have emerged, with some regions incorporating different types of chocolate, nuts, or marshmallows. The "cookies and cream" version has become particularly popular in areas where Oreo cookies are a staple snack, bringing a familiar flavor to this classic dessert.
Differences from Similar Dishes
While Rice Krispie treats are traditionally made with just cereal and marshmallows, the cookies and cream version introduces a crunchy element from crushed chocolate sandwich cookies. This gives the treat a richer flavor and more texture, differentiating it from the classic treat. The combination of Oreo cookies with the gooey marshmallow mixture makes it a more decadent option, compared to the lighter, simpler original Rice Krispie treats.
Where Are They Typically Served?
Cookies and Cream Rice Krispie treats are a versatile dessert, perfect for various occasions. They can be found at birthday parties, bake sales, and casual gatherings. Due to their rich flavor and easy preparation, they are often made for family get-togethers or as a quick treat for children. These treats also make a great snack for watching movies or as a simple dessert after dinner.

Simple to prepare and incredibly tasty. These treats are quite indulgent, so a small portion will suffice. I had never tried adding marshmallow fluff to my Rice Krispie Treats before, but I will certainly be using this recipe again. The only issue I encountered was that when I cut them into squares and displayed them on a cake stand, they ended up melting together over a few days. However, with a little extra chopping, nobody seemed to mind!
