Homemade Yogurt Recipe

This homemade yogurt is simple to prepare and incredibly delicious. With just two ingredients and a bit of patience, you'll have fresh yogurt that beats store-bought every time!

Ingredients

  • 1 gallon whole milk
  • 1 cup plain yogurt with active cultures

Directions

Step 1: Preheat your oven for 10 minutes at its lowest temperature, around 170F (77C), using the self-cleaning function. Once done, turn the oven off but keep the door closed to gently warm the oven walls, letting them heat up for about 50 minutes.

Step 2: Pour the whole milk into a heavy pot and set it over medium heat. Cook, stirring frequently, until the milk reaches 185F (85C) on an instant-read thermometer. This should take around 15 minutes. After reaching the desired temperature, remove from heat and let it cool down to 115F (46C).

Step 3: In a separate bowl, mix 1 cup of the cooled milk with the plain yogurt. Stir until well incorporated.

Step 4: Pour the yogurt and milk mixture back into the pot with the remaining cooled milk and stir to combine.

Step 5: Ladle the milk mixture into 5 very clean glass canning jars. Secure the lids tightly on the jars.

Step 6: Place the filled jars in the warm oven. Turn the oven light on, but keep the oven off. Leave the jars in the closed oven for 6 hours, allowing the yogurt to set.

Step 7: After 6 hours, carefully remove the jars from the oven without shaking them. Place them in the refrigerator and allow them to thicken for about 2 hours before serving.

Step 8: Store the yogurt in the refrigerator for up to 10 days. Enjoy your fresh homemade yogurt!

Recipe Tips

  • If you prefer, you can substitute 1 gallon of 2% milk and 1/2 cup of powdered milk for the whole milk.
  • To speed up the cooling process, fill your sink with cold water and place the pot with milk in the water to cool it down more quickly.
