Fluffy French Toast Recipe
This fluffy French toast recipe is crisp on the outside, yet perfectly soft and tender on the inside. The secret to its fluffiness lies in one key ingredient: all-purpose flour. By adding flour to the batter, it helps bind the liquids together, ensuring a golden crust and a pillowy interior. This addition prevents sogginess and results in the ideal French toast.
Fluffy French Toast Ingredients
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk (or substitute with half-and-half, cream, or alternative milk)
- 3 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon white sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 pinch of salt
- 12 slices of thick-sliced bread ( to 1 inch thick, ideal options: brioche, sourdough, French bread, or challah)
How to Make Fluffy French Toast
- Step 1: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and milk. Whisk them together slowly until the mixture becomes smooth and lump-free.
- Step 2: Add the eggs, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt to the bowl. Whisk everything together until the batter is well combined.
- Step 3: Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium heat.
- Step 4: While the pan heats up, soak the bread slices in the batter, ensuring each slice is saturated but not overly soaked.
- Step 5: Working in batches, place the soaked bread slices onto the preheated pan. Cook them until golden brown on both sides, about 2 minutes per side.
- Step 6: Once cooked, serve the French toast hot and enjoy its crispy exterior and fluffy interior.

I made a slight tweak by adding maple syrup directly into the batter, which allowed me to control the sweetness level better. It worked wonders, and the French toast didnt need syrup at all! A satisfied Allrecipes user.
I baked challah the night before and used it for this French toast. The bread's density gave it a little extra fluff. Adding more cinnamon made it even better, especially with powdered sugar and syrup! P. Dotson.
This is hands down the best French toast recipe ever! I always use brioche bread and swap out the vanilla for almond or rum extract. Its a game changer! Amberdown000.

Cook's Tip
If you want to prepare this French toast in advance, consider making it casserole-style. Simply arrange the bread slices in a greased baking dish, pour the batter over the top, and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, bake at 350F for 40 to 50 minutes. For a crispy finish, sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top and broil for an additional 2-3 minutes.

We really liked the concept and made a few changes to the recipe. We doubled the amount of cinnamon, included 2 pureed bananas, and added a shot of dark rum to the mix. Grand Marnier is also a great option to use. This will definitely lift your spirits!

Great recipe, with a big tip to enhance the outcome: it's crucial to start by mixing the dry ingredients (flour, sugar, salt, and cinnamon) before incorporating the wet ones (milk, eggs, and vanilla extract). This method prevents the cinnamon and sugar from sinking to the bottom of the bowl, resulting in a more evenly mixed batter. Although the mixture may appear darker due to the cinnamon, rest assured it's well-distributed. For an added touch, spread the mixture evenly on the edges of the bread. Pro tip for beginners: If your batter is too thin, add flour; if it's too thick, add milk to adjust the consistency.

I have been preparing this recipe for the past four years, experimenting with different variations. I like to use store-bought sourdough bread, which I leave out on the counter to dry slightly for better absorption. The original recipe yields 6 slices. I have tested out vanilla, orange, almond, and maple extracts, and while all are delicious, maple is our favorite. I opt for brown sugar over white. This morning, I decided to add 1/8 teaspoon of baking powder to the batter as I had never achieved the desired fluffiness before. The addition made a noticeable difference, and my toast rose beautifully. I cook the slices in my electric frypan in batches of 3 at 350 degrees for 3 minutes per side. After cooking, I keep them warm in an oven preheated to 170 degrees and then turned off, as my oven doesn't go any lower. I don't make any other changes to the ingredients, and the result is absolute perfection. Not a single crumb is left behind.

I decided to make a few tweaks to the recipe by adding an extra farm-raised egg and adjusting the milk ratio. Instead of using processed sugar, I opted for Turbinado sugar. I also incorporated 1 tablespoon of plain pea protein powder and 3 tablespoons of white wheat flour for added fiber and to reduce the carb content. I used Ceylon Cinnamon for its benefits on blood sugar levels, adding a bit more than what was required as we love cinnamon. Additionally, I used around 1 tablespoon of Mexican Vanilla. These changes enhanced the overall flavor, resulting in a dish that wasn't overwhelmingly eggy and hid the presence of the protein powder well. The final outcome had a good balance of flavors and paired perfectly with Maple Syrup, fruit, and Turkey Bacon. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the minor adjustments I made to the original recipe.

I have been using this recipe for years. It used to be my daughters' favorite breakfast after sleepovers with friends. Now that the girls are in high school and college, it remains a beloved family recipe and a must-have during holiday gatherings when we are all reunited.
