Breakfast Strata Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 pound sausage, casings removed
- 2 cups sliced fresh mushrooms
- 10 cups cubed, day-old bread
- 8 eggs, beaten
- 3 cups whole milk
- 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
- 1 cups cubed Black Forest ham
- 1 (10 ounce) package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons dry mustard
- 2 teaspoons unsalted butter, melted
- 2 teaspoons dried basil
- 1 teaspoon salt
Directions
- Generously grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish.
- Heat a skillet over medium heat. Cook and stir the sausage until it becomes crumbly and fully browned, about 10 minutes. Once cooked, transfer the sausage to the prepared casserole dish.
- In the same skillet, cook and stir the mushrooms over medium heat until they release their liquid and become lightly browned, 5 to 10 minutes. Drain the mushrooms and set aside.
- In a large bowl, combine the cooked mushrooms, cubed bread, beaten eggs, whole milk, shredded Cheddar cheese, cubed Black Forest ham, thawed spinach, flour, dry mustard, melted butter, dried basil, and salt. Mix everything well.
- Pour the mixture over the cooked sausage in the casserole dish. Cover the dish with a lid or plastic wrap and refrigerate for 2 hours to overnight to allow the flavors to meld.
- Preheat the oven to 350F (175C). Once preheated, bake the casserole in the oven for 60 to 70 minutes, or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.

This recipe is amazing! I made a few tweaks by using 3-4 pieces of bread, opting for only one type of meat (I love sausage), and reducing the amount of milk. To ensure it cooks evenly, I divided the mixture into several small loaf pans or muffin tins. This method also makes it easier to store leftovers.

I tried a variation of Zoobeedo's recipe by switching the quantities of butter and dry mustard. I also just used sausage. After baking it to perfection and serving it, I topped it off with a sautéed mix of four different colored peppers, one medium onion, and a can of Italian chopped tomatoes. The result was absolutely delicious!

Fantastic! I made a few tweaks to the recipe, using a total of 11 eggs, fresh sautéed spinach, and cubed stuffing bread. The result was a big hit with everyone!

I prepared this dish for a work breakfast and it turned out fantastic! I decided to use half sharp cheddar cheese and skip the ham, as I thought having both sausage and ham might be overwhelming. I ended up adding 3-4 extra eggs because it felt like the right thing to do. Instead of using white bread, I opted for a whole wheat bread with nuts in it, which added a delightful texture. Additionally, I included onions in the mix. Although I enjoy spinach, I left it out this time to avoid excess moisture. In the future, I plan to add spinach and adjust by incorporating more eggs. I'm also excited to experiment with different types of cheeses next time!

Great recipe! The only modification I made was using fresh spinach and including a can of diced tomatoes with Italian seasonings.

I absolutely adore this dish as it is. We have a friend who unfortunately doesn't enjoy mushrooms (such a shame), so I decided to dice sweet potatoes into 1/2 inch pieces and parboil them in boiling water as a substitute. It created a unique twist, and we found it to be very delightful!

Great recipe, but a 9x13 pan seemed too large for the amount of strata specified. I ended up eyeballing the ingredients and adjusting the amounts accordingly. The strata turned out delicious in the end!
