Jimmy Dean Breakfast Casserole Recipe

Jimmy Dean Breakfast Casserole Recipe

Cook Time: 65 minutes

Ingredients

This recipe was developed at its original yield. Ingredient amounts are automatically adjusted, but cooking times and steps remain unchanged. Note that not all recipes scale perfectly.

  • 1 (16 ounce) package Regular Flavor Jimmy Dean Pork Sausage
  • 10 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 3 cups milk
  • 2 teaspoons dry mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 6 cups cubed bread
  • 2 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 1 medium tomato, seeded and chopped
  • cup sliced mushrooms
  • cup thin-sliced green onion
  • teaspoon black pepper

Directions

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 325F (165C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.

Step 2: In a large skillet, cook the sausage over medium-high heat, stirring frequently, until it is thoroughly cooked and no longer pink, about 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from heat.

Step 3: In a large bowl, combine the eggs, milk, dry mustard, and salt. Stir well until the mixture is fully combined.

Step 4: Distribute half of the cubed bread evenly into the prepared baking dish. Then, sprinkle with half of the cooked sausage, half of the shredded cheese, half of the chopped tomato, half of the sliced mushrooms, half of the thin-sliced green onion, and half of the black pepper.

Step 5: Repeat the layering process with the remaining bread, sausage, cheese, tomato, mushrooms, green onion, and black pepper.

Step 6: Pour the egg mixture evenly over the casserole, ensuring all ingredients are covered.

Step 7: Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for 55 to 60 minutes, or until the eggs are fully set. If the top begins to brown too quickly, tent the casserole with foil to prevent over-browning.

Notes

Time-saving tip: You can substitute one 9.6-ounce package of fully cooked Jimmy Dean Hearty Sausage Crumbles for the fresh breakfast sausage in most dishes to save time.

This recipe turned out so good! I made it ahead of time, froze it, then let it thaw in the fridge before baking it. I used a whole dozen eggs, 2 cups milk, and 1 cup half and half. I served it for a brunch and my guests loved it! They ate all of it up, there were no leftovers at all. It was a huge hit. This is such a great recipe to make ahead of time if you are having guests and need a good dish to fill all of them up!

Great recipe! I cut it in half, used 4 cups hash browns instead of bread, added green pepper and jalapenos.

Made it as-is, not a fan. However, sort of made it again. Used a bag of Jimmy Dean Skillets, poured that (still frozen) into a greased, glass casserole dish, 8x11. Covered with 5 beaten eggs and 1 cup milk. Baked 350 until done which happened to be 40 mins. Even easier.

I used "Hot Jimmy Dean Sausage" (my son likes spicey) cut in half in 8 x 8. Potato Puffs instead of bread. It was a hit. Thanks!

I have made this many times. Different sausage brands. I have used frozen potatoes O'brien with onions and peppers and frozen shredded potatoes. All very good.

Removed the onions and peppers because it made it too watery. Replaced bread with tater tots. Reduced milk from 3 cups to 2 cups and added two more eggs. Family favorite every time we have guests.

I make this with a package of frozen O’Brien potatoes instead of bread. I assemble the night before and bake off in the morning. Takes 15 minutes more because it is cold. I take it to work often. They love it.

I don't eat pork so I used chicken sausage instead. I did add the mushrooms and green onions. I prepared it the afternoon before and left it in the fridge so all I had to do was pop it in the oven the next morning. It was delicious.

Great! Easy recipe and very tasty. I halved the recipe for two people and still had plenty left for the next day. I’m not real found of the texture of mushrooms so I chopped them a little finer and I added 1/2 of a 4 oz can of chopped mild green chilies for added flavor. For making half of the recipe place in 8”x8” buttered glass pan and bake at 325 degrees for 25-30 minutes. Enjoy!

I made this for Easter Brunch. I doubled the recipe and cooked it in a large aluminum pan (11x17x4). I added a bag a hashbrowns and frozen French green beans. It took a little over 2.5 hours to cook due to the increased volume but I kept cooking it until the center was firm. I also put aluminum foil over the pan after about an hour so that it wouldn't burn/brown too much. It was not too soggy or dry, it was just right. Even my in-laws liked it :D I got 20 servings out of it. Great recipe.

I fried frozen hash browns, yellow pepper and mushrooms with the bulk sausage prior to assembling. Used 2 medium croissants instead of bread. (cubed) Used 2 cups of milk instead of 3 ... 1 cup whole, 1 cup heavy whipping cream...made it richer and less soggy. 1 can Rotel tomatoes and lots of cheese! Great casserole! PS...Leery of the dry mustard. Only used half.

We are a gluten free family. I used 3 everything gluten free bagels cubed instead of bread, this added great flavor, but next time would use only one layer. Otherwise this made an awesome breakfast casserole. The only thing I wish I had realized that I needed to use bulk sausage instead of links. I cut the links in half and spread them around in the layers. It was a hit at the church Easter gathering.

Always a Christmas morning tradition! This year I changed it up a bit...made with Whole Wheat French Bread and Limited Edition Melt & Bake Cheese (half sharp cheddar and half american). Also, added the mushrooms, tomato and yellow bell pepper. My family said it was the best one yet! Baked about 10 min longer than recipe to cook to firm...maybe best at 350 in my oven.

Awesome, I modified it using frozen hash browns in place of bread. No mushrooms. And a can of rotel. 10 eggs and no milk. Everyone loves it!

I loved this recipe with additions of vegetables, onions, potatoes, or bread substitutes, but please, reviewers, when adding your changes, mention the amounts that you added and also whether you baked the Grand biscuits or croissants before subbing them for the bread or straight out of the can. You give your recipe five stars but neglect to say how much of the item you used or what is precooked before adding it to your recipe. Those who are not as experienced with cooking as others would love the specifics of your changes and would love the help, especially when you reward your changes with five stars. But I thank you for reviewing and for your suggestions.

Great recipe. I use Jimmy Dean sage sausage. My family loves it! We cook it often, but love to have it for vacationing together to heat up for breakfast.
