Copycat Bang Bang Shrimp Recipe
Enjoy a restaurant-quality appetizer right at home with this easy-to-make copycat Bang Bang Shrimp recipe, inspired by the popular dish from Bonefish Grill. Crispy shrimp tossed in a creamy, spicy sauce is a crowd-pleaser that's quick to prepare and full of bold flavors.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup Thai-style sweet chili sauce
- 3 dashes Sriracha hot chili sauce (or to taste)
- 1/2 cup cornstarch (or as needed)
- 1 pound medium shrimp, peeled and deveined
- Oil for frying (peanut oil works well)
- 8 lettuce leaves
- 1 bunch green onion, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
Step 1: In a medium bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce, and Sriracha hot sauce until well combined. Set aside.
Step 2: Place the cornstarch in a shallow bowl. Take each shrimp and gently press it into the cornstarch, coating it evenly. Shake off any excess cornstarch.
Step 3: Heat oil in a deep fryer or large saucepan to 375F (190C). Working in batches, fry the shrimp for 3 to 5 minutes until they are golden brown on the outside and opaque in the center. Be careful not to overcook.
Step 4: Once cooked, transfer the shrimp to paper towels to drain excess oil. Place the shrimp in a clean bowl.
Step 5: Pour the prepared sauce mixture over the hot shrimp and toss gently to coat each piece evenly with the creamy, spicy sauce.
Step 6: Arrange the lettuce leaves in a serving bowl. Transfer the sauced shrimp onto the lettuce leaves, and garnish with chopped green onions for an extra pop of color and flavor.

I followed this recipe almost exactly. I decided to make bang bang shrimp soft tacos instead. For 1 serving Eyeball the amounts of each ingredient to taste. Added: chopped green onion cucumber rice vinegar (half a teaspoon) lime juice (a quarter of a lime squeezed) salt & pepper Combine lettuce, green onion, cucumber, rice vinegar, and lime juice. Add the shrimp to the tortilla (and extra sauce if you have it), add lettuce and the mixture you just combined on top. Then top with sesame seeds, salt and pepper. sesame seeds

For 1 person: I used 8 jumbo, peeled, deveined pre-cooked shrimp, dipped in egg wash and then in corn starch. Fried in a couple tablespoons veggie oil until golden ( a couple of minutes) and drained on a paper towel. My sauce was 2 T mayo, 1 T garlic chili sauce, a squirt of Sriracha and a squirt of honey. Toss shrimp gently to coat. OMG delicious! I thought it was as good if not better than anything I've had out. I will make this again!!!

It turned out delicious. The only change I made was I dredged the shrimp thru buttermilk then thru corn starch back thru buttermilk then thru Panko crumbs. The result was identical to the Bang Bang Shrimp from Bone Fish!!

This was a great recipe. My husband loved it. The only thing that I changed was I used potato starch rather than corn starch, and cooked it in a air fryer, at 400. It was perfect. Will be making this again.

Awesome recipe that’s easy to modify to taste for heat or sweet, size of shrimp or amount to serve! I added Mayo and sirracha to the Asian chili sauce available at my grocery store to taste. I painted the raw shrimp with Mayo and then shook them in a bag with equal parts cornstarch and Italian breadcrumbs and some garlic salt. Fry in oil 1-3 minutes per side depending on the size of shrimp. Toss in sauce and pour over chilled lettuce ( I added chopped tomatoes) Garnish with green onions (I substituted with chives if not available). It’s AMAZING! “As good as Bonefish” per my crowd.

I like the crunch of the shrimp, and sometimes the sauce BF restaurant uses is too much so I drizzled the sauce on the lettuce, and instead of tossing shrimp in the sauce …. we drizzled it onto the shrimp. It came out perfect, and for anyone that wanted a bit more sauce, we had plenty!

Proportion of mayo to spices too high - would cut to 1/3 cup mayo. Add more Sarachi and Sweet chili sauce.

I make these for Sunday football games from time to time for my husband. Again, as stated above, drizzle the sauce. DO NOT COAT THE SHRIMP. They become shrimp with goop if they sit more than 10 minutes. I use romaine lettuce as the bed for the shrimp and don't skip the scallions. The add some thing I can't quite describe BUT THEY ARE DELICIOUS!!!

So yummy! I usually double the recipe so I peel 2 pounds of medium shrimp, place in a zip lock and coat with cornstarch. Heat some oil in a pan, fry shrimp for about 3-4 minutes. Then I make the sauce.... 1/2 cup mayo, 1/2 cup thai chili sauce, couple of dashes of hot sauce and stir all together. Then I toss the shrimp in the sauce. I usually make tacos with lettuce, the shrimp, and tortillas!

So good! the sauce was on point! I did change up the shrimp a bit. Used a little under 1/4 cup of cornstarch and about 1/2 cup of Italian breadcrumbs and a hefty amount of salt. Shook it all with the shrimp in a bag and it made it so crispy! Way easier than batter/dredging to fry.

The corn starch really makes the coating on this recipe! Not to mention doubling the sauce recipe because we always LOVE the sauce! We ate at Bone Fish last week and since I have been making this recipe I was disappointed that Bone Fish's recipe was not as good as this one.....which just means I guess I have to make it at home and not eat it at Bone Fish :). Great recipe!

I worked at Bonefish for 3 months, there is no secret, the shrimp is dipped in buttermilk, and dipped in seasoned flower, the seasoned flower is available at any local supermarket

The cornstarch added a really weird texture. Might be better with flour.

I doubled the recipe and it was gobbled up! Sweet and tangy sauce was so good with the light, crispy shrimp! I didn’t have sriracha sauce so I substituted hot sauce and it was still great!

Didn’t come out with a good taste, even added more sriracha. Frying it in the pan left too much oil on the shrimp.

Fast, easy, and tastes way above its difficulty.
