This is essentially my recipe that is also on the site, Sausage Balls with Cream Cheese. The only difference is my recipe used self-rising flour instead of Bisquick. I came up with my recipe because I wanted to make sausage balls and did not have Bisquick (Bisquick has shortening in it and I used cream cheese as a replacement) and discovered by accident that the addition of cream cheese makes the best sausage balls. For this recipe, I did use gluten-free Bisquick and cheddar-jack cheese. As expected these were delicious.

Who would have thought that adding one little ol' package of cream cheese would create a moist, tender sausage ball? Even the leftovers (we make a ton of them) are no longer dried out. The cream cheese does not take away from the flavor of the cheddar or sausage. It only enhances. I made these ahead of time, freezing prior to baking, by placing them on a parchment-lined baking sheet and sliding the tray into my freezer until they are firm and ready to be popped into a freezer-safe container. I bake them at the same temp but do increase the baking time a bit. I just keep watch over them after the specified baking time.

I've never made sausage balls before, but I've eaten a lot of dry ones! These were NOT dry. The cream cheese addition is a must. I used hot sausage, but I may try chopped jalapenos that someone suggested for the next time. I didn't have Bisquick but did have some cheap pancake mix that worked great. Maybe having a touch of sweetness added to the explosion of flavors as these were super tasty. I sprayed one pan but not the other, and neither stuck, as the grease from the sausage was sufficient. Great recipe! I had some white gravy and homemade jelly on the side. Yummy!

I think these sausage balls need a dipping sauce. I am serving them tonight for a potluck and plan on using apricot jelly with a little mustard. I did a few in the air fryer at 325 degrees for 15 minutes to test them out and they were overdone. When I do them in the oven I will watch them carefully and test with a thermometer.

I did add extra cheese. I bake them then put in the freezer and take out as needed for quick breakfast on the go. We reheat in toaster oven. My college kids love them .

I used Jimmy Dean Regular sausage and a dash of Red Pepper. It turned out wonderful and my friends wanted the recipe. The cream cheese makes a huge difference. The taste and texture is better with the cream cheese. They are also more moist. A big hit. My husband even loved them!

I made a double using mild and hot sausage, followed the recipe exactly and they were great!

My husband loves these, daughter isn't as big of a fan but still like them well enough. I think you could really play with the flavors based on what specific sausage you use and any extra seasoning you might add. I cut down on the work of forming them into little balls by just cooking them in my waffle iron (using the Belgian waffle plates, not the American/classic waffle plates). They turn out crisped on the outside, softer on the inside, fully cooked, and just as tasty.

Didn't add any milk, but they were still great. And I should have added all the cream cheese, next time My son (40 yo) devoured them. WOW!!

Fantastic during the holidays because I use Mayo’s uncooked smoked breakfast sausage. A little more special, ya know?? 😋

I was really excited to bring these to a party and was so disappointed - they were really really bland (I mixed hot and regular sausage) and had little taste - I like the idea though - and the crunch - so am going to try again with HOT sausage, Pepper Jack cheese, and maybe that Red Lobster biscuit mix people have recommended - would def not make them this way again!

Sausage balls have been a Christmas Eve tradition for over 40 years. I changed it up this year and went with this recipe. It was good, but I thought it needed some pizzazz spice wise. Evidently the family liked them, because they were gone before all our guests arrived!

Really good and simple! Paired with the right sauce will be amazing.

They were ok, but I can't say I was overly impressed. I don't have a mixer so I really had to work to get everything mixed well, and didn't grease the pans before cooking - NOT a good idea. As for the flavor, they are decent, but nothing amazing.
