I used Crispix instead of Chex (only one box needed to get corn & rice). Tried this in the microwave and next time I will distribute seasoning more evenly to avoid scorching saturated pieces - also stir more often. Traditional oven method still best if time allows.

If you're looking for the true "original" Chex mix recipe, folks, this isn't it. The original recipe was slow-baked in the oven, didn't have bagel chips, and had enough butter so that the spice blend would actually stick to the snack ingredients. My daughter followed this recipe (as posted on the box), thinking she'd end up with our favorite snack, and we ended up eating warmed-up cereal and nuts, and wiping our fingers along the bowl to get the spices. Don't change a great thing, General Mills...and then call it the "original." This is far from it.

The microwave version tastes as good as the bagged Chex mix, but if you want it better than that, bake it at 250 for about an hour, stirring every 15 minutes or so. Pecans are a great addition if you use the slow bake method. This is how I cook it. Read More Helpful (927)

I found the original recipe to be very dry and bland, but with modifications, it can be a 5 star recipe. I like for mine to be a lot more coated with flavor. I've played around with this recipe a few times and this is what I've determined is tastiest. Double the butter. Double the Worcestershire sauce (plus a splash more) Double the onion powder Double the garlic power Do NOT double the season salt because it can get to be too salty. With the additional Worcestershire sauce, that seems to be salty enough. I can't find the awesome garlic chips in my store anymore. Therefore, instead of adding 1 cup of pretzels and 1 cup of the chips, I use 2 cups of Gardettos Original flavor mix, and love it. I do prefer baking over microwaving. I lay it all flat on parchment paper and bake at 250 for 60 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes. With these modifications, I plan to make this again soon!

I always bake mine in a turkey roasting pan. We just like it better, and there’s not as much stirring. Plus, I have a small microwave. I double the spices and use an extra tablespoon of Worcestershire and four more extra ounces of butter. I use corn, rice, and wheat Chex. Gardetto’s special request rye chips. Bagel chips. Cheese It’s. Pretzels. Mixed nuts with no peanuts. Sesame twigs. To equal amount of snack items in this recipe. I cool it right in the roasting pan on a cooling rack. Stirring several times while it cools. Store in gallon size zip loc bags. Sometimes, I’ll add in Frank’s Buffalo Wing Sauce with the butter and spices. Make this your own, with things your family likes. It’s very versatile

I was looking for a gluten-free snack and this is it! I opted out of the pretzels & garlic chips, but did use pecans and spicy spanish peanutes. We like a little kick in our snacks so I added 1/4 tsp of cayenne pepper into the butter mixture. I also added Honey Nut Chex which is a pleasant surprise and adds balance to the cayenne heat. I HIGHLY recommend taking the time to bake this at 250 for an hour stirring every 15 minutes. I lined my pan with Reynolds Non-Stick Liner and it worked great with easy clean up. It was delicious!

I have made this exact recipe only baking in oven for decades straight off the Chex cereal box or from the Betty Crocker cookbook. It is a family favorite! Today I told my husband I was going to try this microwave method and he came absolutely unglued! Why change a good thing? As long as you can be home- bake at 250 for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Yum!

I bake it slowly in a turkey roasting pan, doubling all ingredients. I use store-brand cereal squares & pretzels due to the cost. I don’t bother with nuts because they are expensive. The amount of Worcester I use is closer to 1/2-3/4 cup. You just have to bake it longer. And a couple shots of red hot sauce gives it a bit of twang. Add or subtract anything you want.

As written too bland and not decadent enough for a holiday treat. I tripled all the spices, used four tablespoons of Worsteshire, used a whole stick of butter and omitted the bagel chips. Melted the butter in the toaster over, poured over cereal and nuts in a large bowl, mixed well with seasonings, then baked at 250 for an hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Then its Five Stars.

We love Chex Mix for the holidays and basically use this recipe, with double the spices, like other reviewers, not the butter or liquids... and never, never microwave it. I taste as it bakes and if it doesn't seem spicy enough I'll sprinkle on a little more as it goes...some in our family really love spice and for them I add a bit of smoked paprika and a bit of cayenne. Bake 1.5 hours at 250 degrees, stirring every 15 minutes. NEVER, NEVER microwave. The true original recipe would not have been made in a microwave oven. The house smells terrific as it bakes, and everyone is waiting patiently for it to be done .

Small change for my gluten free sister- no wheat Chex or bagel chips, 4 cups each corn and rice Chex, chopped walnuts and gluten free pretzels! Seasoning same or more to taste. Baked in oven 250 for 1 hour to mom's way of making it!

I've been using the original butter/spices mixture on Cheerios for MANY years! It's great!

First I would Never use the microwave. I only use the oven. This gives a whole other layer of flavor and Crispness Also, I add cheerios and French fried onions to the mix and almost double the seasoning. I can't truly find the original Chex mix that my mom use to make in the sixties and seventies.

The Chex Party Mix that I remember as a child growing up in the 50s and 60s did not have bagel chips

Not enough flavor. I'll melt more butter and bake again 🤞

There's definitely not enough seasoning for a double batch. The next time I make it, I'm going to triple the seasoning mixture. I baked mine ina conventional oven at 250° for one hour, stirring every 15 minutes.

Loved the base recipe, but changed due to my preferences. Upped butter to 8 tbls. Doubled onion and garlic. 3 tbls worchestershire. Baked at 250 for 75 minutes - stirring every 15 minutes. Delish!
