Muddy buddies (a.k.a. puppy chow) is a delicious homemade snack made with cereal, chocolate, peanut butter, and powdered sugar. It's a fun and easy recipe to make at home that can be enjoyed by all ages!
How to Make Muddy Buddies
Heres a step-by-step guide to making this tasty treat:
- Gather all your ingredients. Youll need 3 cups of Rice Chex, 3 cups of Corn Chex, 3 cups of Chocolate Chex, 1 cup of semisweet chocolate chips, cup of peanut butter, cup of butter or margarine, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, and 1 cups of powdered sugar.
- In a large bowl, combine the three types of cereal (Rice Chex, Corn Chex, and Chocolate Chex). Set the bowl aside for now.
- In a microwave-safe bowl, place the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Microwave on high for 1 minute, then stir. Continue to microwave in 30-second intervals until the mixture is smooth and fully combined.
- Once smooth, stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to the chocolate-peanut butter mixture.
- Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the cereal. Stir gently to coat the cereal evenly with the chocolate mixture.
- Transfer the coated cereal into a large resealable plastic bag (2-gallon size). Add 1 cups of powdered sugar into the bag. Seal the bag and shake until all the cereal is evenly coated with the powdered sugar.
- Spread the coated cereal in a single layer on a sheet of wax paper to cool and set. Allow it to cool for about 15-20 minutes.
- Once cooled and set, your muddy buddies are ready to enjoy! Store any leftovers in an airtight at room temperature for up to one week.
Recipe Tip
You can use any combination of Chex cereals you prefer in this recipe, making it versatile for different tastes!
How to Store Muddy Buddies
After the muddy buddies have cooled and set, store them in an airtight at room temperature for up to a week. If you'd like to make them ahead of time for the holidays, you can freeze them for up to two months.

A friends wife made this for a Cub Scout den meeting and it was a huge hit! She calls it Christmas Crack because she only makes it during the holidays and you can't get enough of the stuff, lol.

Easy and good. I will do a 50/50 mix of semi-sweet and milk chocolate next time. I like it sweet!! I made a 1.5x batch, and I used a 1000 watt microwave. I only needed to microwave 15 seconds the second time before everything was smooth. I used a rubber scraper to stir the chocolate and chex together, carefully folding it in so as not to crush the cereal. Keep on stirring until the cereal is coated evenly with chocolate. Just like we did when I was a kid, we dumped the powdered sugar into a paper grocery bag and added the cereal to that. We then took the bag outside and shook, shook, shook it. A little powdered sugar leaks out of the seams of the bag, so that is why we do it outside. Perfect. Will go great with my son's 1st "puppy-themed" birthday party :)

This recipe definitely needs more chocolate and peanut butter. I used 2 cups of semi-sweet chocolate chips and 3/4 cup of peanut butter and it was enough to cover the cereal completely. Letting them cool on a lined pan before coating them with sugar was much easier than it would have been with them warm.

Delicious stuff! I think I used more confectioners sugar than the recipe called for to fully coat the cereal. I found it easy to melt the ingredients in a slow cooker and mix with the cereal in there, but it is tricky to mix well if you dump all the cereal in at once- it's easier to start with a few cups, mix, then add more until it's all coated well.

This is so easy and yummy! And versatile! I used butterscotch chips with the peanut butter mixture and poured over half of the cereal. I melted chocolate and poured over the other half. I first made this over Christmas break and divided the cereal into thirds and used white chocolate, chocolate, and peanut butter chips. Will definitely be a making again! I had no problems using the microwave method- ran microwave in 30 second intervals and attempted to stir after each time until melted.

My family loves this. One item I change is that I put cereal in a large bowl with a lid... then I don't have to waste a plastic storage bag each time. Just pour the chocolate/peanut butter mixture over cereal as indicated, then add powdered sugar. Put the lid on the bowl and spin it over several times (don't shake to hard, but a little shaking okay). Enjoyable and environmentally responsible.

I have made this recipe before with my grandma so wasn't for sure the actual recipe but I looove this, nobody can ever get enough. My niece and nephew call it candy. I didn't change anything other than I had bark chocolate instead of chocolate chips and it still worked perfectly. I also dnt put it in the microwave because I hate baking or melting chocolate in the microwave because it goes bad quickly! So I just added all the ingredients Into a pan and melt it on low heat.

I have made this several times. I double it cause it is a huge favorite. Note !!! I do not use a microwave. I use a 2qt sauce pan with water and a stainless steel mixing bowl. making a double boiler. This, in my opinion is the best way. I do add more peanut butter and butter because I love peanut butter. Add more butter to thin it out a bit. better coverage.

I made a larger batch, added pretzels, walnuts, cheerios and m and m’s, used full bag of chocolate chips, extra peanut butter and needed more powdered sugar. Turkey roaster great idea to mix! Delicious!

Been making this recipe for years, but we call it "puppy chow". I double the powdered sugar to make it look more like the stock photo. Also keeps the mix less messy with the chocolate. If you don't have a large ziploc bag on hand, a couple clean plastic grocery bags work too, just make sure to double them up and tie well! If the mix looks to chocolatey after the first toss in the sugar, add more and repeat the process.

I added, 1/2 tsp of salt, almond extract and vanilla extract. It tasted amazing. Used sugar free peanut butter and semi sweet chips and it was still sweet enough for me.

Addictive! I've made it with butterscotch chips too. Both very good. I put it in a big roast pan to add & stir the powdered sugar. Easier than shaking in a bag.
