Basic Bean Soup Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 pound dry great Northern beans
- 8 cups water
- 12 baby carrots
- 1 cup chopped onion
- pound chopped ham
- cup ketchup
- Salt and pepper to taste
Directions
- In a large bowl, combine the dry beans with 8 cups of water. Cover and let them soak overnight.
- The next day, drain the beans and place them in a large pot. Add more water to cover the beans if necessary.
- Stir in the carrots, chopped onion, and ham into the pot.
- Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to low and allow it to simmer for 4 to 6 hours. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
- Once the beans are tender and the flavors have melded, add the ketchup to achieve your desired color and taste.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste, and serve warm.
