Basic Bean Soup Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 pound dry great Northern beans
  • 8 cups water
  • 12 baby carrots
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • pound chopped ham
  • cup ketchup
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the dry beans with 8 cups of water. Cover and let them soak overnight.
  2. The next day, drain the beans and place them in a large pot. Add more water to cover the beans if necessary.
  3. Stir in the carrots, chopped onion, and ham into the pot.
  4. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to low and allow it to simmer for 4 to 6 hours. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  5. Once the beans are tender and the flavors have melded, add the ketchup to achieve your desired color and taste.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste, and serve warm.
