Here's what you'll need to make perfect microwave rice:

  • Water: About 1 cups of water for every cup of rice.
  • Fat: A teaspoon of unsalted butter or oil enhances flavor and prevents stickiness.

How to Make Rice In the Microwave

Follow these simple steps to make your rice in the microwave:

  1. Rinse and Drain: Start by rinsing the rice in a fine-mesh strainer. Gently stir by hand until the water runs mostly clear. Thoroughly drain the rice.
  2. Prepare the Bowl: Place the drained rice into a microwave-safe bowl. Add 1 cups of water, 1 teaspoon of butter or oil, and teaspoon of kosher salt.
  3. Microwave, Uncovered: Microwave the rice uncovered on HIGH for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the water is mostly absorbed and steam holes appear on the surface.
  4. Cover and Microwave Again: Cover the bowl tightly with a microwave-safe lid or plastic wrap. Microwave on HIGH for an additional 4 minutes, until the rice is tender and all water is absorbed.
  5. Let it Stand: After microwaving, let the rice sit, covered, for 6 minutes to steam and finish cooking.
  6. Fluff and Serve: Once the rice has finished standing, uncover it and fluff with a fork. If the rice isnt yet tender, cover again and microwave in 1-minute intervals until it's done to your liking. Serve immediately.
