Fresh Cranberry Sauce Recipe

Fresh Cranberry Sauce Recipe

Cook Time: 20 minutes

The best things in life are often the simplest, and this fresh cranberry sauce, made with just three ingredients, is proof.

Every November, Americans debate the merits of canned cranberry sauce versus fresh cranberry sauce. The canned version, with its iconic shape and jiggly texture, certainly brings nostalgia. Meanwhile, fresh cranberry sauce tends to have a more complex flavor and a less gelatinous texture. Plus, when you make cranberry sauce from scratch, you can adjust the ingredients and proportions to suit your taste. We think you should give this fresh cranberry sauce a try you wont be disappointed!

How to Buy and Prepare Cranberries

When selecting cranberries, look for those that are plump, firm, and free from blemishes. Avoid bags containing soft, shriveled, or moldy berries. Before cooking, sort through the cranberries, discarding any that aren't fresh. Place the remaining berries in a colander and rinse them thoroughly with cold water.

How to Make Fresh Cranberry Sauce

This fresh cranberry sauce couldnt be easier to make with just three simple ingredients. Heres a brief overview of what you can expect:

  • Bring water to a boil, stir in sugar, and cook until the sugar dissolves.
  • Add cranberries and bring the mixture back to a boil.
  • Reduce the heat and continue simmering until the cranberries pop and the sauce reaches a chunky consistency.
  • Transfer to a serving dish or jars and let it cool completely.
  • Stir the sauce with a fork before serving.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 (12-ounce) package fresh cranberries (such as Ocean Spray)

Directions

Step 1: Gather all the ingredients.

Step 2: Bring the water to a boil in a saucepan. Once boiling, add the sugar and cook for about 5 minutes until the sugar is fully dissolved.

Step 3: Stir in the cranberries and bring the mixture back to a boil.

Step 4: Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes, or longer for a less chunky consistency. The longer you cook it, the less chunky it will be.

Step 5: Once the cranberries have popped and the sauce is thickened, pour it into a serving dish or jars. Cover and let it cool. As it cools, the pectin in the cranberries will help the sauce to gel.

Step 6: Before serving, mix the sauce with a fork to break up any remaining chunks.

Cooks Note

If you prefer a sweeter cranberry sauce, feel free to increase the sugar to up to 2 cups. Personally, I prefer a more tart sauce, so I stick with 1 cup of sugar.

This sauce is incredibly versatile. Use it as a filling for cranberry and cream cheese tarts, or serve it as a delicious topping for bagels, cornbread, or even cheesecake.

This is the best way to cook cranberries. There is NO need to add orange, or lemon, or zest, or anything! KISS! (Keep It Simple Stupid) Don't mess with perfection!

First time making it. Altho I started with white sugar, it wasn't quite the taste I was looking for. I added brown sugar and Viole'! I squeezed orange juice for the tartness. I'll be making this and NOT use canned!

I blended the sauce with an immersion blender while it was still hot. It tasted great with 2 cups of sugar and A little more water then was needed. I am only 11 years old and it was really easy to follow the instructions! I totally recommend it for thanksgiving or anything else!!

I would add only a 1/2 cup of sugar if you use orange juice, and zest and squeeze the same fresh orange for a wonderful orange cranberry sauce. 1/2 cup o sugar cuts down on needless sweet and calories and you can actually taste the cranberries. Wonderful natural sweet-tart!

My husband is diabetic so I used 1 1/2 cups of Spenda instead of sugar. It was excellent.

I used about 1 1/2 c of sugar, and did it the night before Thanksgiving, so it had plenty of time to cool and settle. It was wonderful. I'm the only one in my family who eats it (and none of them eat the canned stuff, either), but that was fine. More for me!

I used half white and half brown sugar. I also used the zest of one orange. Rather than waste the orange juice, I added the juice of the orange and water to make 1 cup. Delicious!

Super simple and came out really yummy. Added orange juice instead of water, and added about 1/4 tsp. of all spice to it. Whisked it so it would mash it a little too.

This was so easy and turned out great! I added a little bit of real Maple syrup and also a couple of TJs candied orange slices (removed the rind at the end). So delicious will make this again! And I may have to because it may not make it to Thanksgiving!!

I made it as directed. I felt it was too sweet. I used orange juice. Next time I will use 1/2 the amount of sugar. My wife added mandarin oranges and chopped walnuts.

Love this quick and easy cranberry recipe. The only thing I changed was I added two Mandarin cuties that I pulverized. I also added one half a cup of sugar and one half a cup of brown sugar. The recipe turned out perfect!

I'm not a fan of cranberry sauce, but we needed to get away from the canned stuff for my husband and I found this recipe to try. He loved it and asked for more mere days later. Now he wants double. So I'd say it's a hit and well work the time . I like the limited amount of ingredients too.

Once you make it like this, you'll never go back to the canned stuff. I used canned for the better part of 40 years. No more!

Instead of making our traditional Cranberries salad with Granny Smith apples, walnuts, Celery, and Raspberry jello, cinnamon, etc. I am going to try and use this recipe but instead of water I am going to substitute in Pineapple juice, and play around with the sugar levels to see if I can get a better taste. I will be using sugar-free Raspberry Jello, I didn't get any apples this year the price is crazy at least for good apples. I am baking Kings Hawaiian Dinner Rolls my Grandmothers recipe so have lots of pineapple juice around. I might have to adjust or add something else to help flavor the Cranberries. Then again we also enjoy the plane old style Cranberries, Sugar, water and nothing else but a dash of sugar, lemon juice to keep it from being too sweet and too sour.
