Onion Tea (Home Remedy for Cough) Recipe
Ingredients
- 4 cups water
- 2 organic onions, quartered with skin left on
- 4 teaspoons honey (or to taste)
Directions
Step 1: Pour 4 cups of water into a pot and add the quartered onions with their skin on. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat.
Step 2: Once the water reaches a boil, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for approximately 1 hour, allowing the flavors to meld together.
Step 3: After simmering, strain the liquid through a sieve to remove the onion pieces.
Step 4: Pour the hot liquid into cups, and sweeten the broth with honey according to your taste. Stir well and serve warm.

I'm not going to lie, this didn't taste good but I didn't expect it to. After all, it's onion juice sweetened with honey. My particular cough is due to seasonal allergies and I will say that after drinking this, it went away for a couple of hours. I drank a second cup before going to bed and was not woken up by coughing until 4 am so take that for what it is worth.

My husband's grandmother told me about this in 1977. Made this for my kids when they were little and it does work! i always added about a teaspoon of vanilla.

So I have been battling a head cold for almost two weeks. Now I will let you know that I have a very strong immune system and this head cold has got me in a literal head lock. I have been hearing about this tea for some time so I decided to try it out. The flavor of this tea will be determined by the onions you use. I used sweet onions. Once the tea was finished, strained, cooled a bit I added a little bit of honey and lemon juice. This was actually a very pleasing flavor. I drank a cup just now and will drink another before bed. I doubled the recipe so I dont have to go through the whole process again for a bit :)

My grandfather put a bowl of cut onions and sugar water on the space heater and let them simmer. That was his remedy. Sounds similar since most don’t have an oil burner in the kitchen like we did!!!

Unlike others, I actually like the taste of this tea. I am making it in hopes that I would like it for its medicinal benefits. From what I understand it’s good for inflammation which I have from my rheumatoid arthritis. And some other benefits if you look it up. So here goes nothing. I sweetened with honey, however, I put the honey in while the tea was simmering.

I don't know why you call it tea, I'd call it broth Onion broth. You can even add lemon. or add some chicken or beef, celery/carrots/noodles etc and make a soup. You can do all kinds of good stuff.
