Ham Bone Chowder Recipe
This hearty and flavorful ham and potato soup is the perfect comfort food. A rich blend of tender ham, vegetables, and creamy texture makes it a delightful dish for any occasion. Follow these easy steps to create a delicious bowl of warmth!
Ingredients
- 1 meaty ham bone, fat trimmed
- 1 (32 fluid ounce) chicken stock
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 tablespoons chopped garlic
- 6 red potatoes, cubed
- 4 large carrots, chopped
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
- 2 teaspoons ground cumin
- 1 cup frozen corn
- 1 cup milk
- Salt and ground black pepper to taste
Directions
Step 1: Place the ham bone into the slow cooker. Pour in the chicken stock, and add the chopped onion and garlic.
Step 2: Set the slow cooker to Low and cook for 6 to 8 hours, allowing the flavors to meld together and the ham to become tender.
Step 3: Once the cooking time is complete, remove the ham bone from the slow cooker. Carefully pull the meat off the bone and shred it. Return the shredded meat to the slow cooker and discard the bone.
Step 4: Add the cubed potatoes, chopped carrots, parsley, and ground cumin to the slow cooker. Stir everything together to combine well.
Step 5: Increase the slow cooker heat to High and cook for an additional 45 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender.
Step 6: Stir in the frozen corn and mix thoroughly.
Step 7: Remove 1 cup of the soup from the slow cooker and transfer it to a blender. Add the milk, cover, and pulse a few times before blending the soup until smooth.
Step 8: Return the blended soup back to the slow cooker and stir it in to create a creamy texture throughout. Season the soup with salt and pepper to taste.

Instead of cumin, I threw in different spices (chives, onion powder, garlic powder, dill weed, celery salt, fresh ground pepper, a little hot sauce) and I threw in about a cup and a half of diced ham. Instead of regular milk, I used one full can of evaporated milk (it easier to cook with, imo). Very hearty and comforting soup. The whole family enjoyed it.

I just made this for dinner tonite and my family loved it! Instead of using a crock pot I put the ham bone in a regular pot, covered it with water, added 3 bay leaves and let it cook on low for 4 hours. The juices from the ham and the water became my stock. I combined 8 cups of the stock and 1 pint of half and half for my broth. I reserved 1 cup of the stock to use with cornstarch to thicken the broth as I wanted it thicker like a chowder. I only added pepper and chili powder (for a little kick) to the broth. I cooked the potatoes and onion for 30 minutes on low then added the celery and carrots and let it cook on low for another 30 minutes.

Great base recipe for what I wanted! I doubled the broth for cooking the ham bone since my pot was large and the bone still had lots of meat. I also added 2 cans of corn instead of one, added 2 cans of great northern beans, extra garlic, and I changed up the spices a bit, including adding about a tablespoon of sugar. Added a little cornstarch to thicken but probably didn't need to as the potatoes did a great job with that. Thanks for the recipe!

So good. I did it just a little differently. I added 1 1/2 cups chopped ham and 3 celery stalks chopped with leaves. I also put everything but the milk in the crockpot on high all at once for 5 hours. It came out so yummy. I love how I creamy it was and I did not have to use heavy cream, I used skim milk!

I liked the flavor, but putting the diced potato and carrots in near the end led to crunchy potatoes and carrots. They were practically raw still. I would make again but put those veggies in at the beginning so they can cook.

An easy way to thicken a soup like this is with instant mashed potato flakes. Just keep adding a few tablespoons and stirring until it is where you want it. Go slow, tho, because it takes a little bit for the flakes to work. Thickens without adding a lot of calories. This soup is very tasty, but I can't say I added the cumin. That idea didn't appeal after I tasted a spoon of the soup with a little cumin added. Used parsley and a bit of Mrs. Dash. Very nice.

We skipped step 5, Later we added 32 oz of beef broth. Great soup w/o the milk.

This is a delicious and very filling soup. I chose to use a pound of cubed ham instead of a ham bone, and added chopped celery, Swiss chard, zucchini, a can of white beans for added fiber and nutrition. This soup will be a regular at house for sure!!

Second time making. Perfect again. Cumin is what really makes the flavor; just a couple tsp of ground dried cumin is what I used. I forgot to add it and kept thinking something was missing. I also added fresh black eyed peas, used tri-colored carrots, and increased the potatoes; there was also quite a bit of meat left on the ham bone. Turned out thick and hearty. My picky pre-teen even asked for seconds (and she “hates” soup).

I found this to have a lot of broth; I like my chowders nice and thick. Next time I think I'd use less chicken stock. Maybe use cream instead of milk. And pureeing just one cup of the chowder didn't add very much body. Great flavor though. I wasn't sure about the cumin but it was tasty! I added my potatoes and carrots about 2 hours before we ate dinner and kept it on low.

Excellent, just as written! My son-in-law smoked a ham a few weeks ago and my daughter gave me the ham bone. I didn't know what to do with it at the time, so I threw it in my freezer. A few days ago, I decided to search for recipies and came across this. It was simple enough for me to make (lol, not the greatest cook), and it came out Fantastic! Today, I took some to my daughter at work for lunch and she Raved about this, asking that I share the recipe! 5 Stars from me and I will definitely make again and share!

Really loved it. This was my first time using the leftover Easter hambone for anything. (It just had so much meat on it that I couldn't bring myself to toss it.) I tweaked the ingredient proportions a little bit due to size but this was definitely a keeper.

The cumin is a different taste not used to in chowder. I used less than 1 tsp and it was just enough. I also made it with bacon like regular corn chowder.

I made this with a ham bone I had in my freezer and then threw in addition ham I had. I’m impressed with how well it turned out. Now that I have made it once, I could tweak it if I want a slightly different flavor. I will say it is necessary to make cornbread with it!

Made this exactly as written except made it on the stove top and added some cubed ham because the bone I had wasn’t very meaty. The soup was great, everyone loved it!! Super easy to make. I thought the consistency was great, but I didn’t use a slow cooker.

It takes a lot longer than 45 minutes for the potatoes and carrots to cook in a slow cooker, even on high. Next time I would put them in after 4 -6 hours and let them cook for the remaining 2 hours. It also wasn't as thick as I hoped it would be, but otherwise it tasted pretty good.

This was ok. The whole chowder was bland tasting and defiantly not thick like a chowder. We did eat the entire pot; although we added plenty of S&P
