Bolognese Sauce Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, minced
  • 4 slices bacon, cut into 1/2 inch pieces
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 1 (28 ounce) can Italian plum tomatoes
  • 1/2 pound fresh mushrooms, sliced
  • 6 ounces tomato sauce
  • 2 carrots, shredded
  • 1 stalk celery, chopped
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine
  • 1/2 cup chicken stock
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 pound pasta

Directions

  1. Warm olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add minced onion, bacon, and garlic. Saut until the bacon becomes brown and crispy, about 10 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the bacon mixture to a plate lined with paper towels to drain. Set aside.
  2. In the same skillet, increase the heat to medium-high. Add the ground beef and pork, stirring occasionally until browned and crumbled, about 5 to 7 minutes. Drain any excess grease and discard.
  3. Stir in the reserved bacon mixture, Italian plum tomatoes, sliced mushrooms, tomato sauce, shredded carrots, chopped celery, dry white wine, chicken stock, dried basil, dried oregano, salt, and pepper into the meat mixture. Bring everything to a boil.
  4. Once boiling, cover the skillet, reduce the heat, and let the sauce simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally to ensure the flavors meld together.
  5. While the sauce is simmering, bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente, about 8 to 10 minutes. Drain the pasta.
  6. Serve the sauce hot over the cooked pasta, and enjoy!

Recipe Tips

  • You can substitute 2 teaspoons of chopped fresh basil for the 1/2 teaspoon of dried basil.
  • If you have any leftover sauce, feel free to freeze it for future use.
