Classic Candied Sweet Potatoes Recipe
Ingredients
- 6 medium sweet potatoes
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 teaspoon salt
Directions
Step 1: Gather all the ingredients.
Step 2: Preheat your oven to 350F (175C).
Step 3: Place a steamer basket in a large pot and add about 2 inches of water. Bring it to a boil.
Step 4: Place the whole sweet potatoes in the steamer basket and cover. Let them steam for about 30 minutes or until easily pierced with a fork.
Step 5: Once the sweet potatoes are cooked, drain them and allow them to cool down.
Step 6: Peel and slice the sweet potatoes into rounds and arrange them in a 9x13-inch baking dish.
Step 7: In a saucepan, combine the brown sugar, butter, water, and salt. Heat over medium until the mixture is bubbly and the sugar dissolves completely.
Step 8: Pour the sugar-butter sauce over the sweet potatoes in the baking dish.
Step 9: Bake the sweet potatoes in the preheated oven for about 1 hour. Be sure to baste occasionally with the sauce for extra caramelization.
Make Ahead Instructions
To prepare the dish ahead of time, complete all steps up to the baking step. Let the dish cool completely, then cover and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. When ready to bake, reheat in the oven at 350F (175C) for 20-25 minutes, covered with foil. Uncover during the last 5 minutes to allow for extra caramelization.

This was so yummy! I made it for Thanksgiving. I actually cooked the casserole in my crock pot instead of the oven, to save oven space, and it was perfect. I will definitely make this one again!

These were excellent. Based on other reviews, I made some adjustments: used only 1/4 cup water and let the mixture boil for 10 minutes. Next time, I'm not going to add any water at all. I also added a tsp of cinnamon. Excellent. Thank you.

OK, I added NO WATER initially after reading reviews. Just the salt, butter and brown sugar. Figured I could add water as I went if I needed to. Once my potatoes were steamed and peeled, I sliced into rounds, put them into my big frying pan, added my syrupy sauce and 'sauteed?' them in the sauce. Once your heat is high enough the sauce most definitely thickens and then carmelizes. I never did add any water at all. My only problem now is that these potatoes taste way better than the Costco pumpkin pie I got for dessert. I AM NOT KIDDING!!!!!!! Enjoy! mk

I made this twice. The first time step by step. Turned out great. I divided the potatoes into two parts first part i left plain second part i added marshmallows and baked for a couple more minutes to melt nd brown marshmallows. Everybody loved both. Now second time I made them was short on time took total of 15 min to complete n put on table. I cooked potatoes in microwave until tender while in microwave I made sauce. Once potatoes were cooked i peeled the cut into quarters added sauce stirred died added marshmallows to half 1 minute in microwave and to the table. Was awesome again... This is now my goto recipe for sweet potatoes. Thanks

This is soooo close to my mother's and grandmother's recipe! Instead of water, use 1/4 c of orange juice and a tsp of vanilla. If you make them in a skillet, cook low and slow without the lid for up to an hour and a half. You want the sauce to carmelize and heat (not steam) the sweet potatoes. I also prefer ice cube size chunks instead of slices, so they don't fall apart. Feel free to add a dash or so of cinnamon if you want the flavor. I also loved another person's crockpot idea....especially for holidays when every cooktop and oven is occupied!

The first time I scaled the recipe down to 1 serving (but used 1 sliced potato instead of 3/4) & doubled the sauce. For some reason after baking for ~ an hour (per the directions) the sauce was completely gone. It was good, though a little chewy where it caramelized - but I wanted the gooey sauce like my mother-in-law's. So, the following day I did them in a slow cooker (1 hour on high then turn to keep warm) to avoid losing the sauce & they were a million times better. I also made the following changes the second time - cut into large chunks instead of slices, used DARK brown sugar, added a sprinkle of cinnamon & ~ 1/2 tsp of maple flavoring, and doubled the sauce (though I think maybe 1 1/2 of the sauce recipe would have been better?). ALSO - if using a slow cooker, when steaming the potatoes don't steam them all the way or you'll have mush (which is what I ended up with for the bottom half of my crockpot). I steamed them for 30 min & they were still pretty hard in the middle so I steamed them for another 30 min. since the directions said "until tender". I should have stopped after the first 30, as they would have continued to cook in the crockpot & may have held their shape better. UPDATE: made in oven with 2 large cans of sweet potatoes - definitely did not need to make so much sauce (I made 1 1/2 recipe), but not sure I cooked for as long (just keep an eye on it). Tasted just fine with canned, so was a great way to make this recipe super easy & quick.

My husband is a huge fan of candied yams...but, I am not. However, I enjoyed this recipe. And, he loved it! I only made a few minor changes. I cubed and boiled my potatoes. I omitted the salt, since I used salted butter and added 1/4 cup of orange juice to the sugar mixture. Also, I added cinnamon to the sugar mixture. You can't have sweet potatoes without cinnamon! Because I boiled them, the potatoes only took about 30 minutes in the oven to finish. Will definitely make this one again, and again, and again...

Super simple, adjustable. I varied the number of sweet potatoes to fit my need and then I baked them to just fork tender, cooled them, cut them into chunks, added the syrup as per recipe, added mallows and stuck in the oven. When it was good and hot and pots were done as I desired, I turned the broiler on to crisp up the mallows and it was done in less than an hour with very little work! Loved it, thanks!!!

The first time I made this, I followed the recipe exactly. The second time I made it, I kept the recipe the same except for halving the butter, salt and brown sugar and it didn't taste any different. In other words, I used 6 or 7 yams (3 pounds), half a cup of water, half a stick of butter, half a teaspoon of salt and half a cup of brown sugar. With food becoming ridiculously expensive, I urge all of you to give my modifications a try.

This recipe received rave reviews this past Easter. I followed others' suggestions on here and added only 1/4 c of water. Next time I may add none so that the potatoes "candy-up" more.

I always make this recipe for my family. One thing to try is adding about 1/4 cup of orange juice to the brown sugar/butter sauce!! (Trust me it’s a game changer) it makes the sauce soo much better with a taste of orange added to the brown sugar/cinnamon butter flavours. We like our potatoes really sweet so I definitely use more brown sugar. This recipe is a must try! Especially for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. There are rarely leftovers!

Great recipe - steaming them first made slicing the potatoes so much easier! Simple ingredients, delicious dish!

This is exactly the sweet potato recipe my family has been making for generations. My mom who is 92 first made it with her grandmother and her mother, who taught me. But I’m so glad to have discovered this a few years ago with the proportions for the sauce because my mom has never written it down and Ive always relied on her memory which isn’t very good anymore. It’s not the same if you use orange yams. You need to use yellowish-white sweet potatoes like the Hannah variety. The yams are too soft and too sweet. And please, no marshmallows! 😫 It’s funny this recipe says to cut them length-wise into spears and not into round medallions like most sweet potato recipes do. That’s just how I was taught by my grandmother. I have no idea why!
