Irish Fried Cabbage with Bacon Recipe
Ingredients
This recipe was developed at its original yield. Ingredient amounts are automatically adjusted, but cooking times and steps remain unchanged. Note that not all recipes scale perfectly.
Original recipe (1X) yields 6 servings:
- 1 (12 ounce) package bacon
- cup bacon drippings
- 1 small head cabbage, cored and finely chopped
- Ground black pepper to taste
Directions
Step 1: Cook the bacon in a deep skillet over medium heat for 5 to 7 minutes, or until it becomes crispy. Once cooked, remove the bacon from the skillet and place it on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess fat.
Step 2: Reserve cup of the bacon drippings in the skillet. Discard any remaining drippings or save them for another use.
Step 3: Add the finely chopped cabbage to the hot bacon drippings in the skillet. Cook and stir the cabbage over medium heat for 5 to 7 minutes, or until it begins to wilt and soften.
Step 4: Crumble the cooked bacon over the cabbage and stir everything together. Let it simmer for an additional 2 to 3 minutes, or until the bacon is heated through and well combined with the cabbage.
Step 5: Season the dish with ground black pepper to taste. Serve warm and enjoy!

I live in the South and this recipe is a staple in all households. There is nothing better if you like cabbage. Thanks for sharing.

Saute chopped onions with the cabbage and when everything is soft, mix it,along with the bacon, into mashed potatoes. That dish is called Colcannon and served with melted butter in a well you make on top of the potatoes! I make that every St Pat's Day along with Corned Beef Wellington!

I’m not a fan of cabbage but I’m willing to try anything with bacon. This side dish is good, even though it’s not good for you. I used a package of coleslaw to cut down on prep time and only 5 slices of regular bacon and was liberal with the pepper. Great side to our corned beef brisket.

Great flavors! Like another reviewer - I didn’t have enough reserved bacon grease so added 2 TBLS of butter. I also added a small, chopped onion - adding with the cabbage. To get the cabbage to the wilted texture I wanted, I ended up covering after the 5 min mark and simmered, covered closer to 15ish min before adding back the bacon and cooking another few min uncovered. This was awesome with the Bangers and Mash recipe I made from this site! While this would be good any day, super fun and tasty dish for St Patty’s l! Thanks cmarten!

This is soooo good! I add about a tsp of brown sugar to help caramelize the cabbage but still retain it's crisp/tender qualities. Brussel sprouts are TDF prepared like this. I half them, steam them for a short time then throw them in the skillet. My future daughter in law says, "I now like brussel sprouts!"

I love it! Didn't thoroughly wilt the cabbage to preserve a bit of a crunch. Forgot to season with black pepper but I drizzled some amount of olive oil as there was not enough bacon fat and also dropped a 3/4-inch slice of stick butter, too.

I've been making this for years..I shred the cabbage instead of chopping it cooks more evenly. BIG TIP: you can also use pre-shredded cabbage from the grocery store, which makes it fast and easy. I add whatever I have avail. onion red or yellow, celery chopped finely. I also have prefried bacon in my freezer which is very convenient. And I keep the bacon grease in the refrigerator for seasoning other dishes. My husband loves this dish. And even if you don't like cabbage, you may want to try this, it just might change your mind on cabbage.

I added boiled potatoes and fried them along with the cabbage. Sometimes I use leftover steamed cabbage and just fry until warm.

I have been making this for years with slight tweaks. I add about 2-4 ounces of ketchup after the cabbage starts to wilt and stir well. Then let the cabbage cook till soft and add the crumbled bacon back into the pan. Sometimes I will cook a pound of breakfast sausage and add that to the cabbage and bacon mixture. I will usually use 3 large heads of cabbage and enough meat to make the perfect ratio of meat to cabbage because the dish freezes wonderfully. It is one of my favorite dishes any time of the year.

This is the way I have fixed fried cabbage for years...And...Yes! I now live in the south but my mother fixed it this way too and I was raised in the north!! Simple, easy and delicious. You can substitute butter for the bacon grease with great results too.
