Creamed Cabbage Recipe

Creamed Cabbage Recipe

Cook Time: 30 minutes

This delicious and creamy cabbage dish, cooked with crispy bacon and a touch of sour cream, is a simple yet flavorful side dish that pairs perfectly with any main course. Heres how to make it:

Ingredients

  • 4 slices bacon
  • cup butter
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large head cabbage, cored and shredded
  • cup sour cream

Directions

  1. Heat a large, deep skillet over medium-high heat. Add the bacon and cook, turning occasionally, until evenly browned and crispy, about 10 minutes. Once cooked, remove the bacon and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess fat.
  2. In the same skillet, add butter, flour, and salt. Whisk the ingredients with the bacon drippings over medium heat until the butter melts and the mixture becomes smooth.
  3. Add the shredded cabbage to the skillet, stirring occasionally. Cook for about 15 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender and slightly browned.
  4. While the cabbage is cooking, crumble the cooked bacon into small pieces and add it to the skillet.
  5. Stir in the sour cream, allowing the mixture to cook for another 1 to 2 minutes, until everything is heated through and well combined.
  6. Once the cabbage is tender and coated with the creamy mixture, serve immediately and enjoy!

Revised review: This recipe is fantastic! I decided to use only half a head of cabbage while keeping the other ingredients the same, resulting in a creamier consistency. Additionally, I caramelized a small chopped onion and mixed it in. For the finishing touch, I transferred the mixture to a baking dish, topped it with panko bread crumbs, and baked it at 350°F for approximately 10 minutes. The outcome was simply delicious!

Fantastic! Following the advice of previous reviewers, I included onion and garlic in this recipe. Since I only had a pound of turkey bacon on hand, I skipped the grease. Instead, I used 1/2 cup of butter to deglaze the pan before adding the cabbage, onion, and garlic. For a pop of color and flavor, I sprinkled in some pepper and smoked paprika. I tossed in the entire pound of diced turkey and the dish turned out wonderfully. I will certainly be making this again!

I will definitely be making this recipe again. I had no issues using gluten-free flour. For my taste, I decided to sauté onions along with the cabbage and peppers before adding the flour and salt, and I wouldn't make any changes. This dish is incredibly easy, fast, and delicious!

I prepared this dish last night and both my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I rated it 4 stars instead of 5 because I didn't completely follow the instructions. I only used half a head of cabbage but still made the entire sauce. Following a tip from another reviewer, I added the sour cream off the heat after letting it rest for a bit. And of course, because I like to bend the rules a little, I used 6 pieces of bacon instead of the recommended amount.

I followed the recipe instructions but decided to add extra bacon and skip the 15-minute cabbage cooking time, as I thought it would make the cabbage too mushy. Taking the advice of another reviewer, I allowed the dish to cool before mixing in the sour cream. The result was delicious! We paired it with a small piece of steak and thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Using high-quality bacon was crucial in preventing it from turning too greasy. This dish was a hit, and I will definitely be making it again.

Keto Version: Skip the flour. I substituted leftover bacon fat for bacon and fried up chopped salami instead. I added it to half-sauteed cabbage, then stirred in about a quarter cup of sour cream at the end. The dish turned out pretty delicious! I also sprinkled on some garlic salt and pepper for extra flavor.

I gave this recipe a try and really liked it! Unfortunately, I didn't have any sour cream on hand, so I substituted an equal amount of cream cheese. I also added a quarter cup of plain Greek yogurt. I skipped the flour since the cream cheese already thickened the mixture sufficiently. The end result was fantastic!

I have prepared this dish twice now. The first time, I followed the recipe exactly and it turned out fantastic. The second time, I mistakenly thought I had bacon but didn't! Instead, I used some country ham pieces from the freezer, cooked them up, and chopped them into small pieces. Although there was no bacon grease, it didn't affect the flavor at all, and the dish turned out to be delicious!

I followed the recipe exactly, but used red cabbage instead and omitted the bacon since my husband is vegetarian. It turned out to be a delicious comfort dish. I will definitely be making it again!

My husband absolutely loved this dish and praised it multiple times while eating. I personally thought it was just okay. I'll give it a 4-star rating because he would be thrilled if I made it again, but the tanginess from the sour cream wasn't quite what I expected for a creamed cabbage dish - which is totally fine! I made a half portion of the recipe, but kept the full amount of bacon, and also sautéed some chopped onions with the cabbage. I'm glad I gave this recipe a try and appreciate you sharing it!

I followed the recipe with a few tweaks - I used half a head of cabbage, added 6 strips of bacon, and didn't shy away from the butter and sour cream. The result was absolutely delicious and a perfect fit for my keto diet!
